I hired Linda as my career coach because I wanted some new ideas on how to apply for jobs and what changes I could make so my resume stands out more. My resume was already in great shape so it didn't require rewriting, but she reformatted it so my major accomplishments are front and center. The DISC assessment I did with her was insightful and I incorporated that into my resume and my job interviews.

Dr. Sharon Lee graciously fell into my space when I was 22. She coached and mentored me until about 25. Three years have passed since then and I can say that the service she has given me is invaluable. No, it was not a become an instant success, or a become instantly better person type of thing. Dr. Lee administers tools; she identifies what the tool is, how to use it and most importantly, which tool to apply to what problem area. Then, once you understand those basics, she sets you free to master those tools for yourself. What I enjoyed most about Dr. Lee’s services is that she didn’t hold your hand the entire way through. Things you thought you had together she’d quickly point out that you didn’t, and even if you felt angry about what she was saying to you at the moment, there was always a teachable moment where you could come to your senses and process your situation and errors rationally. Make no mistake, Dr. Lee is certainly kind and compassionate, friendly...all things you would hope to expect from a Counseling Professional. But she is not afraid to push the buttons needed to elevate you where you need to be. My experience with Dr. Lee has been wonderful. What is taught by her can be carried and utilized long after your season with her is over. It has grown me, and it will grow you. Book services with Dr. Lee. It is certainly a worthwhile investment.

Dr. Carter is a true woman of God and professional. Working with her as my life coach was one of the best experiences I have ever had but it was no cake walk...the assignments will push you, sometimes to a point of being comfortable but it is worth it. I am a better person because of it. I would highly recommend Dr. Carter and if you find yourself in need of such services, she is the real deal.

Strive with Purpose has given me the most relative and effective guidance throughout my experience with the business. Ms. Williams allowed for me to discover the solution to my problems by letting me to talk about my issues, develop a plan to improve my own self motivation, and most importantly allowed for me to understand the importance of my thoughts, feelings, and self-esteem from an Existential approach. Strive with Purpose has assisted me in understanding my purpose!

I've known Sharhonda since 2010, and she has served as my therapist/counselor since that day. I consider more of my friend than my therapist. She has always gone above and beyond her call of duty. It doesn't matter what I call her for, or what kind of crisis situation I'm dealing with, she's always available. I have had 3 other therapists in the past before I began receiving services from Sharhonda, but she is the best therapist that I have ever met. She is very courteous and professional, as well as punctual as she can be, being that she is a wife and mother. She believes in therapeutic activities and will give a client "homework", worksheets to complete at home, on their time to bring back at your next appointment. Over the course of the 5 years that I have known Sharhonda, there's been maybe 5 times that I have called her and not been able to reach her, and she later let me know that she was out of town on a family matter. There isn't anything that I can think of that she needs to do better or improve on, because she does an excellent job as a mental health therapist/counselor. She is a beautiful person inside and out.

My work stands out for two reasons. One...I love doing it, and two...I frequently do it for free. Which means that I like it and people trust my words. Sometimes, unfortunately, some only realize the value of those words in hindsight. I am making my first consultation free. If you like my edification...we'll continue. If not...I bid you well. My time is valuable and I DO work for money, but this is a business relationship first. If you don't think I can help you - why hire me. And how will you know unless you sample my work. I don not want to waste your time any more than you want your time wasted. I take pride in everything that I do. I want the sheets on my bunk to look the best. Besides, a one time consultation may be all you need, and that I'll give for free, because I love you - whoever you are. I believe in love so much, I'll bet that even YOU will pay for true value. I have a common sense approach to life. Love...its powerful enough on its own. Love doesn't need my help. We both know that love is blind sometimes and we both know that this is why you are here. Love makes it harder to see right from wrong. You are here because you need direction or confirmation to what you are already deciding. Or maybe you need a fresh perspective or new insight. Every one needs a teacher, even me. How can the child be an engineer, without the professor to teach him engineering. Love cant be taught though, your born with it, so you can only experience it and express it. If you've never experienced something new, its foreign to you and you need some fresh solid options on the table. Which may help you determine how best to express yourself in these new experiences. Whether these experiences they be innocent or almost unforgivable.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

  • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
  • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
  • Defining your career goals
  • Creating a plan for job searching
  • Improving networking strategies and skills
  • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
  • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
  • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

  • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
  • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
  • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
  • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
  • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
  • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
  • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

When it’s time to take your career to the next level, it’s time to hire a career coach. The cost to have a career coach help you with your professional journey will vary based on how many sessions you require, the level of coaching you desire, and the rates of the coach as determined by their experience, expertise, education and training. On average, career coaching sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the professional and what your needs are. Career coaches in smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living will also typically have lower rates than those residing in large metro areas like New York, although most do offer remote coaching. Many coaches also offer a free introductory consultation, which gives you the opportunity to determine if their personality and coaching style are the right fit. It’s helpful to ask the coach about their relevant experience and get references from former clients. Depending on the professional, session rates could range anywhere from under $60 to well over $250 per session. Package discounts are a good way to commit to the relationship as well as get savings on services.

What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
