Dean was professional in his work as well as with his communication. Dean is a perfectionist and it shows in his install of the Screen Eeze and screen on our porch. I highly recommend him for your next project. He will be the first one that we call next time we are in need of a skilled carpenter. Could not be happier with our experience.

I had the opportunity to meet Justin through Thumbtack. He worked on my porch railings after winning the bid for the job. He was fair and reasonable in his pricing. As far as the work done, it appeared to be excellent craftsmanship. Justin is very professional and a skilled carpenter. I would definitely give him an opportunity to bid on another job first and pray to God its workable so he can work his magic once again! As the weather improves over the next few weeks, he will return to put the final touches on some quality work. Thank you Justin! First class job!!!!!

Laura did an incredible job putting up a fence around my back yard. The fence turned out beautifully and Laura was a real pleasure to work with. She worked with me to come up with the perfect design that so that I could get the look I wanted for the right price. She was very meticulous and thorough in her work but still got the job done in a timely manner. I could tell that she really cared about getting things done the right way. If you are looking for a carpenter I would highly recommend Laura!!

We can’t say enough great things about Scott & the work he’s done for us. We have used Scott for a number of projects in both our current home as well as our previous home. The most recent project he completed was a built-in wall unit for our living room & as usual, it turned out great. The work he does is amazing. If you are looking for a carpenter, we highly recommend Scott! Mac and Caryn McDaniel

HI! I am writing in support of Ground Up Construction. About 8 months ago my father, who is 94, and a retired carpenter, had an incident with a raccoon. The raccoon ate through the floor of his laundry room looking for a place to stay for the winter. This did an incredible amount of damage. I placed a call for bid on Thumbtack and got an immediate response from Ryan Todd at Ground Up Construction. They came up and took a look at the damage and gave a detailed bid. They were by far the most professional of the company's that spoke to us about the job and gave the most complete materials list and labor expenses. They spoke to my father about what they thought would need to be done and discussed with him what problems they might encounter. As my father put it, "they are going to do what I would do, if I could have done the work." Two weeks later they were on the job. The job was done quickly and finished on budget. These men are all thoroughly competent professionals with plenty of experience. I highly recommend them for any carpentry that you might need. Mike Lopp 336-784-8760

As a Project Mgr of a local building company and someone who has been involved around residential construction for over 20 years, I am often asked for good referrals. When it comes to interior trim, I have many people that I could refer, but I always refer Trim Time as the first option. Unlike many "trim carpenters" that I have come across over the years, Bill does not have to rely on painters to make his work look good. His work always looks the same whether it's a project that requires stain or paint. In addition to superior craftsmanship, Bill has the ability to design for the customer or simply reproduce something that a customer may have seen in a picture of photograph. Simply put...I highly recommend Trim Time.

I've just had the pleasure of working with Steve Damato. He returned my phone calls promptly, showed up when he said he would, and did a beautiful repair job on a structural beam in my 100 year old farm house in the proposed amount of time. Both he and his Master Carpenter have a great work ethic and are knowledgeable, neat, and thorough professionals. I look forward to working with Steve again and highly recommend him.

We first met JC and Robinson Construction when they performed major repairs after a tree limb crashed through our roof. They did an excellent job with the roof repair including replacing 8 sheets of plywood, interior drywall ceiling and wall replacement, and additional repairs to a rotted sun room roof and exterior over sized sun room window and supporting structure. Robinson Construction also replaced two sun room sunlights. All work was top notch and completed on time. JC's star performer is his lead carpenter Freddie who is clearly an outstanding craftsman and the key to JC and Robinson's success. We were so impressed with this experience that we then paid a reasonable premium to have JC and crew repaint the home and effect other needed repairs, and install two new doors. The end product was equally impressive but the work dragged on for well over a month, partly due to weather but also due to other job conflicts. The length of time it took became aggravating and detracted from an otherwise positive outcome. Still I would highly recommend JC and Robinson Construction, just make sure you have a strong understanding regarding the timeline for completion.

I am the owner of a custom millwork and furniture shop. I have been in finish carpentry at all levels for 38 years, Jordan was and is one of the most talented craftsmen I have ever worked with. His "get it right" attitude is just one of his most valuable assets. I have often wished he still lived in Arkansas so we could work together again.

Kenneth Ridge has done work for us several times over the years. He added a two car garage to our house and built it to our specifications. Everything was done in a timely manor and he was very professional. He also redone both of our bathrooms. One bath had to have the shower built from scratch and Kenneth did a very nice job of it. The large bath had to have a window replaced and he came up with the idea of a shelf where the window was because it was going into the garage that had been built. Over all Kenneth Ridge is a very good carpenter, plumber and a jack of all trades. He does very good work and we have not a complaint with any thing that was done. he does very outstanding work. He can build anything.

None of the other options responded as fast as Carpentry Solutions. The others responded with the basic email reply but Ricardo was ready to come and analyze, estimate, and get to work. Also the other options were not including caulking or painting for my wainscot and crown molding. Carpentry Solutions was a one-stop shop and it was completed in 2 days. Great job and thanks!

I am very happy that I had Mr. Manner to do the work. I strongly recommend him to anyone who is looking for a responsible and professional carpenter.

I had two decorative columns designed and installed by Mark and they are by far the most beautiful structures in my house. They look as if they were part of the original construction; and are far more beautiful that I ever imagined they would be. I can't say enough about how pleased I am with the work Mark Nicopolis did for me. He was on-time for every appt. and paid attention to every detail. His work speaks for itself. It is beyond superb!!! His pricing is competitive and very fair. But, after you see his work, you will definitely wonder why it didn't cost more. You won't meet a kinder or more professional worker in the business. I called a few other carpenters about the work I wanted done and the estimates were through the roof. Mark came in and knew exactly what I was looking for, showed me a sketch and in days was on the job. He even made suggestions I hadn't considered and they were brilliant. I had my new columns finished in just hours. Super fast and simply sensational. Exceptional work! Every detail is precise. Beautiful!!! I HIGHLY recommend Mnico Construction Company without hesitation! And I look forward to having more work done by Mark in the future. This was by far the best home upgrade and investment I've ever made. I couldn't be happier and I LOVE walking into my home and seeing these gorgeous structures every day. I can't wait to entertain guests for the holidays. The columns are STUNNING and make my home showpiece!!!! Thanks so very very much!!

He performs all work with high quality and workmanship skills needed to complete all tasks on time. Personally, I hired Jorge to replace two sets of patio doors including a large amount of siding and foundation repair. He did an excellent job and his personal interest and pride in his work really impressed me. Please call me if you would like more information anytime. Mike 336-687-5066

          Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

          Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

          Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

          How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.

How much does it cost to have kitchen cabinets installed?

In any kitchen, the cabinets are the main focus, so you want to make sure new or replacement cabinets are installed correctly. A professional carpenter can properly, securely mount new cabinets to the wall; the national average cost for this service is $7,725, although the cost varies widely depending on the type of cabinets, their material and their size, and the accessories you add. A typical fee is $70 per linear foot to remove existing cabinets and assemble and install new ones; the cost is less if you do the demolition and removal yourself. Stock cabinets are the least expensive to have installed, ranging from $75 to $400 each; semi-custom cabinets range from $150 to $900 each; and custom cabinets cost from $500 to $1,400 each. Wood cabinets are more expensive than those made from plywood or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and finished with a laminate. Wood cabinets range in cost from $80 to $160 per linear foot. Laminate-finished cabinets cost $35 to $75 per linear foot, on average.
