Steven K. says, "We recently moved to Raleigh and as part of our update- upgrade effort to the home we decided to replace our rear patio deck. Not knowing very many folks, we scoured neighborhood guides, spoke to friends, chatted with box box retailers, and local pain shops seeking the best contractor for us. After an extensive interview process with a half dozen folks we decided to go forward with Josue and Top Choice. I would first say that we are not the easiest folks to deal with as both my wife and me have an ‘analytical leaning’. During the ‘courtship’ process I regularly exchanged notes with all kinds of questions, each and every time he was prompt, courteous and comprehensive in his responses. We like many others I suspect were debating the merits of wood versus composite decking. Josue was quick to layout the pros cons and after much deliberation decided to go with a natural wood deck. We utilized kiln dried pressure treated wood. A few key observations - josue and his team (it was largely a family affair or very much seemed like it) were always punctual! He laid out the scope of the project and pretty much to a tee things went to plan. The only area we encountered a delay was on the trusses (deck under structure) which after nearly a decade ended to be replaced. At the time of estimating, this fact can not be determined until you actually take the old deck boards off and are able to properly assess. We ended up waiting an extra few days to get the replacement wood. - we elected to replace the railing system which had been a traditional wood with a hybrid -stainless steel wire (josue suggested a high end marine cable with high end stainless steel fittings). It if course was more labor intensive and as such necessitated a modest bump in price, but we loved how it came out! - josue is unbelievably meticulous and very much an extreme detail oriented guy. This spanned all aspects of the project and gave us a high degree of comfort that things were being done correctly. - high work ethic- josue and his team worked full days oftentimes from 8 or even earlier to 7 pm. Even came on over a weekend on both Saturday and Sunday. - josue is a man who operates with a high degree of professionalism and has a maturity well beyond his years. - we elected to stain the deck ourselves thinking it would be a good family bonding experience. With our son not feeling well that day, it was more of a late night laborious exercise. We used brush, pad and roller. Josue offers this service utilizing spraying. Conclusion- josue and top choice were not the cheapest but were fairly priced. When you consider the ‘whole package’ of what they provided I Wouk’s unequivocally recommend them for any deck related project. You won’t be disappointed!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.
