Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does carpet cleaning cost per square foot?

In some cases, a quote from a carpet cleaning company will depend on the square footage of the room. The lower end of these prices will be between $0.15 and $0.20 per square foot, and they may rise as high as $0.40-$0.50 per square foot. Factors raising the price include the carpet’s condition (are there stains?) and whether they have to clean carpeted stairs, which take longer.

Which is better: steam cleaning or shampooing carpet?

Both steam cleaning and shampooing are tried-and-true methods for getting dirt and stains out of your carpets. The methods are different, however.

Steam cleaning will remove dirt from your carpets via hot water extraction, while shampooing requires scrubbing. If you’re in a time crunch, or if you just have one or two small spots that need to be removed, shampooing may be a better option, as it allows you to spot-clean small areas. Both steam cleaning and shampooing make your carpets wet, so you will need to allow for time for the carpets to dry.

Contact carpet cleaning pros near you, and discuss the best options for your carpets.

Is it worth getting carpets professionally cleaned?

Purchasing a steam cleaner yourself may help to remove stubborn stains, but it simply won’t match the deep clean and efficiency that comes from hiring a professional carpet cleaner. Pros have powerful tools that can quickly remove even the most stubborn stains.

If you’re selling your home, clean carpets can make your home more appealing to prospective buyers. And the expense is offset when you consider that you only need to get your carpets cleaned about once a year. Plus, professional carpet cleaning can extend the life of your carpets, saving you money in the long run.

How long does carpet cleaning take?

Given the way it can transform the carpet, cleaning happens remarkably quickly. You can expect an average size room to require about 20 minutes to thoroughly clean.

The job could take longer for several reasons. If the stains are widespread or particularly deep, the professional cleaner might need to spend more time removing them. They may also need to take time to move furniture out of the way.

How long does it take for carpet to dry after cleaning?

After a cleaning, you can expect your carpet to remain slightly damp for between six and 12 hours. You can expect the lower end of this figure if the air is dry, there’s plenty of air circulation or the temperature isn’t too low in your house. However, for humid environments or lower temperatures, your carpet could stay damp for longer.

What is dry carpet cleaning?

Dry carpet cleaning uses very little moisture to clean carpets. Instead, this method uses compound cleaning agents to loosen dirt that might be trapped in the carpet’s fibers. It’s an effective way to remove stains from soiled carpets.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a professional carpet cleaner or steam cleaner when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a carpet cleaner or steam cleaner, follow all guidelines surrounding social distancing, sanitize any involved surfaces, ventilate indoor areas where workers have been and use digital payment services instead of cash or a check. Before the pro arrives at your home, create a plan with them to make sure everyone in the household stays safe.

Do professional carpet cleaners or steam cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

While cleaning services such as professional carpet cleaning or steam cleaning are not typically done remotely, many businesses and professionals are making changes to accommodate the CDC's social distancing guidelines. If you come across a carpet cleaner’s profile and it states they’re offering remote services, contact the cleaner to see what those services include.

Does a professional carpet cleaner or steam cleaner need to enter my home?

Because the majority of carpet cleaning and steam cleaning jobs take place in someone’s home, it’s likely that a professional carpet cleaner would need to enter your home.

When you contact carpet cleaners near you, ask if they will do a video call in place of a standard consultation. Send photos and other materials digitally. Practice safe social distancing at all times, and follow both local and CDC guidelines.

How can I find out if a professional carpet cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Local and federal governments are currently in the process of defining essential services guidelines, and it’s best to read them to see whether professional carpet cleaning or steam cleaning is considered essential. A good place to start is with your city or state’s government website.

The CISA's Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage identifies 16 critical infrastructure sectors on a federal level. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

I had four rooms of dirty carpet cleaned.. Sam, was prompt, professional, kind and courteous. The carpets were deep cleaned and nearly dry in just about an hour! The water extraction used was very efficient. No squishy wet spots or dank smell. The carpets have never looked and smelled better. I highly recommend Green Zone Carpet cleaning. Green Zone Carpet Cleaning is awesome. We worked with Sam a few years ago and then again recently. He fit us into his schedule last minute and did an outstanding job at two locations. He was even able to remove stains on a couch that previous professional cleaners were unable to get out. Green Zone is now our go-to carpet and upholstery cleaning service provider.

Hired Joe to clean the carpets of my entire house prior to move in. Joe was very nice and clearly enjoys what he does. My only wish is that a few of the larger (older) stains could of been removed. Otherwise, the carpets looked great!

We are absolutely delighted with the carpet cleaning work that the two-person team did in our home. Their work was of the highest quality, the two people were exceptionally professional, courteous, and friendly. They explained their processes clearly and precisely and our expectations were far exceeded. The total work was of exceptional value. We would highly recommend Treasure Home Services, LLC to anyone needing carpet cleaning services, and we will definitely make them our go-to company in the future.

Richard was quick to respond to our request for a quote. We hired him and had the cleaning scheduled for the following week. Our carpets look incredible. His work is detailed, and he let me know what he’d be doing where. We had putty embedded in the playroom carpet that others couldn’t get out and Richard was successful. I’d highly recommend him.

I had Green Zone a rental home that had very dirty carpet. Green zone came a got up the stains. There was some miscommunication with the number of rooms they were suppose to do. They came back out the next day to clean the room but with an additional charge. I would use them again

This was my first interaction with this company and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that the owners of BB Cleaning care absolutely NOTHING about customer service. I am VERY upset about my overall experience with Brian and Raquel Barton. Let me start from the beginning…BB’s price was higher than what I thought was fair to pay for the job that I needed done. However, the company holds a five star rating from customer reviews and I was impressed by the pictures that were posted of past work. When I shared with Brian that the price was slightly higher than what I could afford, he quickly advised me to go find another company to do the job! What he said to me felt rude, and it was definitely a red flag that should have prompted me to stop right there, but instead I told him that I would continue to research companies in the area but might be back in touch depending on what I found. After more research but still feeling like BB Cleaning was the best choice, I decided to be thorough and call Brian with a few questions to make sure I was making the right decision. Brian and I discussed the condition of my carpet, details of the cleaning and my specific needs. After the call, I decided to hire BB Cleaning and booked an appointment on 2.5.18 for 2.23.18. The night before the appointment, my dad told me that he was concerned about his grass. He said that he has experienced his grass being “burned” in the past from how hot the tubing gets when the water flows through. I thought it would be a good idea to mention this to Brian to make sure that he knew to come around the side of the house rather than cutting across the yard and disturbing the grass. To my shock, Brian tells me that it “sounds complicated” and for a SECOND time he tells me to go find another company to do the cleaning! Complicated? To go around the house instead of cutting through the grass? How in the devil is that complicated? At this point, my appointment had been booked for THREE WEEKS when he goes and pulls this on me the night before the cleaning...not to mention that my dad and I had spent a considerable amount of time moving furniture and preparing the room for the cleaning. Additionally, I think it’s “funny” that his wife, Raquel, lists herself as the “company owner” but never reached out to me, especially after last night. Isn’t that what good businesspeople do? They connect with their clients, particularly if it’s a negative situation? Imagine that...the day before the carpet is supposed to be cleaned, Brian cancels my appointment and tells me to go find another company to do the cleaning because it’s “too complicated“ to come around the side of the house so as not to trample the grass and “the owner” never says a word. Bottom line: I DO NOT recommend this company. While the cleaning job might be good, the customer service is deplorable. I also noticed today that the customer reviews on their website are from 2016! If zero stars had been an option I would have chosen that instead. Even one star was way too generous. Here are our email exchanges just to show you how they left me high and dry without a second thought... My email last night (the night before the appointment): Hi, I wanted to reach out to you with a concern my dad has about tomorrow. He says that he has experienced his grass being “burned” in the past from how hot the tubing gets when the water flows through. Obviously, he doesn’t want that to happen again. The way our house is designed, the front door faces a side street with nothing but our yard grass in between. There is a sidewalk that leads from the side of the house where the driveway is but it’s a bit of a distance compared to just cutting through the grass at the front of the house. Do you have a work around for situations like this? Brian’s response: This sounds a little complicated. I recommend that maybe it would be better for you to hire another company for the cleaning. Please have a great evening. My response: My goodness. I have already moved everything out of the room in preparation for tomorrow and arranged my schedule around the appointment. I chose your company because of how impressive the pictures were of the work you’ve done and also because of the large number of highly satisfied customers who gave you five star reviews. I was going to offer to send pictures so you could see that it’s not as complicated as it may have sounded, but it was already dark by the time I was able to send the email tonight. This feels very abrupt and is quite upsetting. Based on your email, I will consider the appointment cancelled. **Brian nor Raquel never responded to my last email even though they knew I was upset about the way I’d been treated. #DISGRACEFULLY UNPROFESSIONAL!!! ~ Cherisse H.
