Jose and his assistant Cameron powerwashed my house, driveway and walkway. Jose scheduled the service in a timely manner, he was professional and arrived on-time. He moved things and cleaned and placed things back. I would recommend Handy Dandy to others! He also provided good information and Customer Service! I would definitely recommend! Thanks Jose!

I hired Jim to paint my picket fence and mail box at my driveway. He went above and beyond what I asked for at no extra cost. He primed and painted it. And he also secured it where it was loose. He did an excellent job. He is professional and courteous. He came when he said he would. He did the work in a timely manner and he did a great job. When he was done, he asked if it was as I wanted it to be. I would hire him again for sure!

We have had 4 Seasons clean our gutters twice this year (spring and fall). Each time they did an exceptional job. They arrived on time, performed the service quickly and professionally. They got the pine straw off our roof as well as cleaned the gutters and cleaned up the debris from the gutters that fell in the yard. As a finishing touch, they used their blowers and rakes to clean our sidewalk and driveway. Our sidewalk and driveway looked better when they left than when they arrived! We will definitely use this company again and highly recommend them.

He was great to work with and did an excellent job! He came to a rental property I owned and pressure washed the driveway, walkway and front door area. His brother also changed out 3 ceiling fans for us. He is very pleasant and a very hard worker, not to mention it was over 95 degrees that day!

My sister and I are real estate investors and residential property renovators. We are always on the lookout for quality contractors who perform good work at a competitive price. Upon meeting Marcel and his wife we immediately knew we wanted to work with them. Their other Thumbtack reviews were impressive and their level of professionalism was what we were looking for. Marcel and his team renovated a 3/1 ranch style home for us. Improvements included: complete kitchen and bathroom overhaul, painting, carpet, new window casing and installation, new siding, and other decorative cosmetic fixes throughout the home. The work he and his team performed on this property was impeccable. He keeps you informed throughout the process with daily calls and status updates. His initial quote was itemized and true to budget. There were plenty of times we checked in and he was working into the evenings and on the weekends. Not because he had slipped on the schedule but because he knew it was in everyone’s best interested to get the job done in a timely manner. He also makes sure that the work is to your level of satisfaction before he moves on to the next task. At the end of the project we were totally satisfied. We got a quality renovation at a reasonable price. The house was listed on the market and sold on the very same day!!! Marcel and his MHI Works team is a pleasure to work with. Not only does he and his team do great work but his customer service skills are outstanding. He communicates with you throughout the process, constantly gives you updates and makes you feel confident that you will achieve whatever your projects goals are. There is no doubt we will use MHI Works again. They are listed as a preferred contractor moving forward. Al D. Swanky Footprints Properties

I’m very pleased to recommend Home Repair Taskmaster! As a new homeowner with little to no knowledge of installation, she has been a tremendous help! Her work is at a quality and caliber that rivals the more expensive competitors. I appreciate someone that is responsive, researches the projects before arriving, is on time, trustworthy, and will complete the job successfully. In a matter of only a few months she has pressure washed my driveway, porch, and garage; installed a number of IKEA items including floating shelves and floating bookcases; installed a floating cat perch, added risers above my kitchen cabinets to display home décor; hung a picture mirror in my dining room; changed shower heads and secured bathroom fixtures, adjusted and secured mounted curtain rods; hung fabric bolt racks and a pegboard in my sewing room, and installed garage ceiling shelving. I am completely satisfied with all of the work she has done. I am inquisitive in nature and a unique characteristic is that she has been willing to answer my questions about the installation process. On projects that I am considering, I am able to send her a message with picture or the link to the item at the store and she is able to help me critically think about what would be involved in the endeavor and the cost. I have recommended her to others and will continue to call her to complete various projects.

3D Remodeling did an outstanding job on the repairs at my home. I had accumulated a list of Things to Do and I needed assistance. The list included repairs to a double wooden gate that was a small project on its own, replacing boards and installing new hinges. They also replaced a new kitchen light, replaced the wall lights outside the garage and on the front porch. In just a few hours they had completed my list of things that I had wanted done for months. I am very happy with the work and would recommend 3D Remodeling to anyone who needs a project completed and wants a dependable, professional job done. 3D Remodeling will be the first call I make for any home repair projects. I used this company to clear out under driveway drainage areas. Mr Gonzalez kept me advised when he would be coming. He was very professional and the work was completed to my satisfaction. It was horribly hot weather and I checked on him a few times but he was well prepared and a diligent worker. I would definitely recommend this company.

I'm a real estate broker in Greensboro, NC of my own firm, Gate City Real Estate. I've called Kelvin many times for electrical work & different odd jobs. He's very reliable & reasonably priced. I would say on several occasions he's helped me keep a real estate transaction moving forward by his great general knowledge of repairs and renovations. I've also referred him to clients many times and often get text messages and emails after thanking me for the referral. I highly recommend!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
