Thank you so much for the amazing job your company did with the landscaping at my home. The project was large and the attention to detail by John was perfect!!! They went above and beyond what I had expected and we are very impressed with the results. Our yard looks good as new and better then I ever thought it could. I am excited to have additional work done by John in the near future. I already have it scheduled!!! Please feel free to ask for my contact info if you would like a reference. :-)

Great job mowing the yard but communication issue, or lack of communication, caused no trimming and weeding of flower bed. Have to find someone else now to go back days later.

Great job! Caulked and sealed cracks and around pipes. I live in an older home and was having issues with bugs entering the home. I will hire again for future projects.

Kevin McKoy is OUTSTANDING. He is fair and honest. His forte is lawn care, however, he has a wide resource of networks to extend his services for his customers. I initially contacted McKoy's Lawn Care & Maintenance to give a quote on a fence/gate project. The fence/gate projected expanded to front lawn repair, french drain and flower bed installation. Then he did a full back yard makeover: rock path, lawn, tree & plant installation, flower bed preparation, connecting gutter pipes to drain properly, and large flower/garden beds. In addition, when there was a slight tweak (correction), he was accommodating and ensured that the fix was completed satisfactorily. I would recommend Kevin McKoy.

He really did a great job and was able to do the work soon after quoting. Rob was friendly, knowledgeable, and communicated very well. The only reason I gave a 4/5 is the price. First let me say that my backyard was a mess. I have poison ivy, vines, overgrown trees and much more. However, it’s only a small portion of my back yard and I was quoted $775. That’s about $90/hour for the amount of time he was there. I’m by no means trying to discourage anyone from using Rob, he did a great job, but $90/hour may be quite steep for lawn work....that’s almost 3 times what I make with an engineering degree. In the end he knocked off $200 because I said I would do bagging up of the sticks and leaves. It only took me 1.5 hours to do...It doesn’t make sense to pay someone $100/hr to gather up sticks and put them on the curb.

If you require a landscaper/horticultural knowledgeable person – Spencer Gordon with his Anu Landscaping Design are fantastic – I highly recommend his services. With his understanding of plants, shrubs and trees Spencer has the ability to suggest re-design and do maintenance turning any yard into an area of beauty. My experience has been very positive – we are going about changes methodically with on-going maintenance. Gordon has replaced many of the shrubs around my home – he designed and installed a decorative drainage system that solved a major water problem in my yard. I would not hesitate giving Spencer any outdoor project including irrigation and landscape lighting– let him come up with ideas ……….

We can't say enough great things about Jackson & his crew. The recently did a lot of interior painting & dry wall for us & the house looks amazing! Great communication, friendly & very timely. We have a vacation home & live out of state but he made it very easy to get everything set up, pick out colors ect. This work was to be done in between guests & it was completed with perfection & everything cleaned up after. Our home was taken care of in the process of all the work going on (floors covered, items moved ect). We have already asked for quotes on some other remodeling work that we are wanting done. We would recommend Jackson highly!!

He communicated that he was running late, and mowed lawn while I was at work. When inspecting work morning after noticed that certain things were not done. He mowed over 3 plants of ours and did not trim weeds pictured or communicate that he could not weed eat them. Would not recommend unless situation is rectified with a refund and explanation for reasoning why some items quoted were not done. He was nice and professional in conversation but did not walk through with my roommate after job was finished.

Our new home came with over grown bushes in the front and side. They were removed and the others were trimmed along with cutting the grass. Outstanding service!

Doug Shore of The Starr Co. provides superior service and has extensive knowledge of the residential construction industry. The unique advantage of using The Start Co. versus other residential contractors is the personal touch Doug offers. He can provide services for small and large home improvement projects. His pricing is very competitive and far exceeded my expectations.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.
