How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

  • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
  • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
  • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
  • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
  • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
  • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
  • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

  • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
  • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
  • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
  • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
  • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

This woman is all magic! I was in need of a makeup artist with talent at a good price and she was it! She was my fairy god mother on the day of prom because I felt like Cinderella! She came to my house, set up, and worked her magic! I highly recommend Shajarazade to anyone in need of a makeup artist who does good quality makeup for a reasonable price!

Wow! Words cannot express my makeup session with Natasha. I was in Charlotte for a wedding. She was the only makeup artist who responded on a Sunday. She was fifteen minutes early and the transformation was exceptional. She is a gem.

My niece was going for a natural look for her prom and she was very happy with her makeup. She was beautiful! Her parents were also very happy with her look and Sedacia's service. I was happy that I chose her as the make up artist.

I wish I could leave Intellectual Glam a good makeup review but she cancelled twice!! I originally booked her for a trial and then makeup on the day of the event. The first time she cancelled was because of a power outage, which I understood, but when I asked if she could come to me, she said she had other clients and I suppose could no longer accommodate my appointment? Anyway, gave the benefit of the doubt and rescheduled the trial for the next day. Then that one gets cancelled 35 minutes before the appointment time! Thankfully I scrambled last minute and found a more reliable makeup artist for the event.

I've been meaning to write this review for a while and now I finally have a chance to sit down and brag about how good of a makeup artist Elana is! This was my first time using Thumbtack and I was looking specifically for a cruelty-free makeup artist. When I first talked to Elana about using cruelty free products, she gave me a whole list of products she had. She was also very flexible to meet with. We booked Elana for a trial makeup, photoshoot session, and for my Quinceneara. The trial makeup looked amazing although it wasn't my style. I talked to Elana about what I wanted to change based on my preference and bam! for my photoshoot it looked even better! I also wanted to say that I learned Elana can work with any brow shape or size and they will be poppin! On the day of my quinceneara Elana was at my house at 8am ready to beat some faces, lol. She spent that morning helping with my sisters hair and spending the rest of the day retouching my makeup, fixing my crown, changing out of my dress, and helping the girls in my court. My makeup also stayed on all day and all night. It lived through tears, sweat, hugs, kisses, everything! She was so caring and engaged which was beyond of what I had expected. I would totally reccomend her to any friends or family. I would DEFINITELY work with her again in the future. I wish I had closeup pictures of the makeup looks but you can see everything on her instagram @Beatby.Ebeauty !

I’m not sure what happened with this artist. She set a date and time with me to do my makeup and gave me a quote for my whole bridal party. I set up an appointment for my bridal trial for the day of my engagement party and she just ghosted me. I tried to reach her by text, email, voice mail, messenger and no response. I needed up not being able to get my makeup done at all. All of the Mac and Sephora counters were full for appointments. I was very very upset. Very unprofessional. I would not recommend.

My experience with Rachel Rogers was nothing short of amazing. I had her do my makeup for my wedding and it was exactly how wanted if not better. She is very talented and in my personal opinion she does not charge enough for her work. I can tell she loves what she does and she was very nice and calming as I was very nervous and I have anxiety. I would recommend her to anyone I am so glad I picked her. If you are looking for a professional and talented makeup artist who can bring your ideas to life stop here. She got your back.

I'm sorry to say I was extremely disappointed with what happened with my appointment with Cynthia. I was serving as the Mistress of Ceremony at my company's 10 year anniversary gala held at the Ritz-Carlton, uptown Charlotte. I am new to the area. I have a makeup artist in Raleigh, where I moved from. Despite my makeup artist being available to do my makeup, I choose to find someone in the Charlotte area. I found Cynthia on this site...saw her gallery of work and read her testimonials. I had several inquiries but chose Cynthia. We communicated and confirmed the date and time the services would occur. When Cynthia was 10 minutes late, I began to call and text her to no avail...25 minutes after our scheduled appointment she texted me saying that she was running late due to a wedding appointment but would arrive within 20 minutes. Although, this would make me late for the cocktail hour, it still allowed me to arrive to dinner on time...15 minutes came and went...I texted....I called....she never responded...because I asked Cynthia to meet me at my office because it would allow me to be closer to the venue, I did not have much makeup with me....at 6:45 pm,15 minutes before the gala began and 1 hour and 15 minutes after my initial appointment, I gave up....threw on some foundation and lip gloss and rushed to my event...unfortunately I was not able to mingle with my guests before the event began....at 7:15 Cynthia texted me and said she was ready!!! Are you kidding? I was seated on the dias at that time. Even after this appointment debacle, I expected Cynthia to contact me and apologize and offer some discounted services (or something) in an effort to save a potential client...unfortunately I never heard back from her...that is just as disappointing as missing my appointment. I just regret having not driven to Raleigh and using my makeup artist. It would have eliminated the frustration and anxiety that I experienced on a very important night...I hope that she has learned from this experience and plan a little better. If your first client is late, you shouldn't allow that to penalize your other appointments. I am a very loyal customer and could use your services on a regular basis however my business was not important enough to salvage. Still looking for a local artist.

Rachel responded quickly to my request. She showed up early for the job, she was so nice that we loved her right away. We really do need a local makeup artist now and we were happy to find one. We will definitely hire her again!! She not only did a beautiful job for our client, but she was super professional and didn't argue about the wait time for the client to arrive. I assure you that we will hire her again.

I needed to book a makeup artist for my niece's sweet sixteen party. Even though I'm in the TV industry, I didn't know any local MUA. So like everyone else in America, I turned to google. I found Thumbtacks website and figured what the heck, let's give it a try. They recommended a few people; Shajarazade's work looked great. I am so happy with my choice. She was polite, punctual, and professional. When she arrived I wasn't at home. She came in setup and immediately began to work. The girls LOVED her work and her energy. Her work is outstanding. I will definitely hire her again.
