Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is in a party bus?

A party bus can be a fun and safe way to transport a group of people to or from an event. A party bus can be anything from a retrofitted school bus complete with disco lights, to an upscale shuttle service, to a stretch Hummer with a full bar. What is inside a party bus depends on the company you hire and what you are looking for. Many party buses have bars in them, complete with glassware, ice bins and mini fridges. Often party buses have festive lighting like strobe lights, black lights, dimmable lighting and track lighting on the floor. A party bus usually has loudspeakers in the back for en route dancing and may even have a dancing pole in the center. Some states require seat belts in party buses and decree that all passengers must be seated when the vehicles are moving, so there must be a seat for each passenger. To make sure you know what you are paying for, request photos of the inside and outside of the exact vehicle you are hiring. Also make sure you have all fees and details of what is and is not covered in a written contract.

How much do you tip for a party bus?

When you rent a party bus, it’s industry standard to tip the driver 15 percent to 20 percent of the rental cost. Some rental companies include a gratuity for the driver as a line item on the bill, while others leave tipping to the discretion of the passengers. Often party bus drivers are employees of the rental company, and are not seeing most of the money you paid to hire the ride for the night. You should consider the tip as a standard part of your total party bus price. The job of the party bus driver is to keep you and the other passengers safe, ensure your comfort, and get you to your destinations on time (barring outside factors like weather or unpredicted traffic). Party bus drivers are usually the ones who stock and prep the bus with ice, drinks, and other requested items before picking you up. They are also usually tasked with cleaning the vehicle after you and your guests are done for the night. Ask your rental company whether a tip is included in the quoted price, and be sure to be prepared with cash or the ability to tip by credit card after the event. Of course, tipping is not required (unless it is a written part of a contract you agreed to), and if you had problems with the driver, you don’t have to tip. But if you had a nice time, consider tipping well. And if your guests were extra rowdy and messy, add a few extra dollars to your tip to acknowledge the driver’s extra work cleaning up after you.

How much does it cost to rent a party bus?

Party bus prices vary based on the size of party bus you want, the time of day and day of the week you need, and the length of time that you want to rent the bus. The national average price to rent a party bus is $530-$700. Party bus prices can also be affected by where in the country you live. Bigger cities, like New York, have higher fees for insurance, licensing and tolls than a smaller town might, plus a higher cost to do business, so party bus prices will typically be higher than in smaller cities.

The size and luxury of the party bus you want will affect the price. For example, a 10-passenger vehicle could cost $100 per hour, a 14-passenger vehicle could cost $125 per hour, and a 20-passenger vehicle could cost $150 per hour. Party bus prices will also be dictated by the season or holidays. Rental on New Year’s Eve will be much more expensive than on a Tuesday afternoon in November. Most rental companies have a minimum number of hours you must rent, often starting around four hours. The longer you rent, the higher the price. The distance you travel can also affect cost. For example, a driving tour through wine country can cost more than a bar-hopping party through town — even for the same number of hours — due to the additional fuel required to drive the longer distance. Messy party guests can also increase your party bus price. Broken glass, major spills, or damage to the vehicle’s interior or exterior will all be billed to the customer. A company may have a base rate of $150 for excessive cleaning, plus additional charges for actual damage.

Darden Transportation did an awesome job taking 20 friends to a bridal shower. The bus was spotless and new and Tramarcus gave us an IPad to DJ our music. Our party ended later than expected and he was great to wait over an hour for us. We will definitely use Darden again.

I had a fantastic experience with Red Carpet Limo! I knew I needed a party bus for transportation to and from a concert, but I was unsure of exactly how many guests were coming and our ideal pickup and drop off spots. Greg & Lorie were incredibly responsive, showing me different vehicle options and even accommodating for additional group members. Our driver, Mr. Jess, was punctual, patient, and flexible. The bus was clean and included a terrific speaker with Bluetooth, so we could play any music we’d like. The cooler was also a nice perk to keep our drinks chilled. Compared to other companies, RedCarpetLimo also seems like the best deal around! 10/10 would recommend to a friend!

Having to dispute with my bank my deposit. From the beginning booking was a bit much. I made a payment for my deposit via thumbtack only to have the vendor come back and say they don’t accept thumbtack payments due to fraud or something in the past so that’s the first issue we ran into. I was told to just request the refund from thumbtack and then pay the deposit again v is zelle so I did (i have these correspondences confirming I would be refunded). The day of service the driver arrived over an hour early so they got the time wrong even though it was verified multiple times. I won’t go into too many details but in short the driver of the bus was driving recklessly, hitting curbs, going through lights, abrupt stopping…it was crazy! The next day or so I receive a message saying there was damage done to a tv that no one even knew was ON the bus and vomit on the stairs from one of the guests at the end of the night who had gotten sick. The vendor sent pictures and I checked in with the group to verify. I sat NEXT to this tv apparently and my best friend and her husband sat what would have been in front of the tv. No one knew the tv was on the bus much less CRACKED it. Let me reiterate, cracked a whole tv and not in one but TWO different locations. This was NOT a rowdy bunch at all! We literally sat down 98% of the time! One crack was in the bottom and another on the side. I’ve reached out to everyone on that bus and no one can recall any incident whatsoever that would cause such damage to a TV and two very different locations on the television. I am a person who absolutely has no issue with paying for damage that I’ve done, for example, the vomit, my brother-in-law was sick that night, and threw up and I wholeheartedly take responsibility for that, but the TV I have a true issue with. When I got onto the bus, there was no inspection that was done and so I politely reached out to the owner and said I appreciate your message but I can’t be Reassured that the damage on the TV was due to my party. I told the owner that I was happy to pay for any damage that we truly incurred but I was having an issue with the TV situation because not one of the 15 people on the bus even recall an incident happen that could’ve caused any such damage. Again, I cannot reiterate enough how much I am willing to pay for damage that my party caused Because I want to be an honest person, but I’m truly having an issue with this. The owner eventually stopped responding all together and so I reached out to Thumbtack for my original request for my refund that was wrongfully submitted anyways and thumbtack reached back out to me to tell me that Gregory was not going to send my $644.back. Now keep in mind, that $644 was not a deposit that was sent via Thumbtack and they asked that I send it via Zell instead and that they would refund me. Furthermore, the owner Gregory, told me that in order to repair the TV it was going to be $347 plus an $80 installation fee so about 400 and something dollars for everything. Well, they got $644 of mine that I don’t even agree I owe so not only are they keeping the money that I don’t feel I owe they want to keep extra because the total damage wasn’t even $644. So I have multiple issues here. They want me to pay for damages that I don’t believe we’re responsible for (yes I will hundred percent pay for the vomit clean up), but even if I did agree to pay for the television (which I am not) from his screenshots, it’s still does not total $644 yet they told me they’re keeping all of my money via Thumbtack. I feel this is a very dishonest and shady company. I wanted to support them. I felt confident that they would be great, they were veteran owned, half of my friends on that bus that night are veterans and I just want it to be supportive, but I am 100% disappointment in the service that I’ve gotten and that I still remain to get from this company and thumbtack. I don’t even think I want to use Thumbtack anymore because their customer service has been nothing but unhelpful in the situation so I’ve had to take it to my bank at this point.
