- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I was an athlete all of my life. I grew up playing a sport, or multiple sports, every season. I was the first born in my family, so my dad was excited to turn me into a tomboy! :) I was one of those lucky kids that was tall and lanky and could eat whatever I wanted...although that could have been because, well, I was young and constantly on the go. After high school I went to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD to play basketball. I ended up getting very sick while I was there and had to leave. After that, I decided not to play sports anymore - I wanted to be a normal kid with a normal schedule and do normal kid things, like everyone else. Well with my newfound inactivity and "normalness", for lack of a better term, I also found about 15 extra pounds! About a year an half later I tried to start back at the gym, lost a few pounds and felt good so I stopped going. Well that wasn't the smart thing to do because then I gained all the weight back and about 10 pounds more! By the time I graduated college I was 25lbs overweight and pretty miserable. At this point I felt like I was at my lowest point - I was overweight, I was in one of those crappy relationships you feel stuck in, working a job I didn't like (marketing desk job), I didn't feel pretty, I had zero confidence, and as a result I was a negative, unhappy person. Then something happened. I'm not sure what it was - I can't explain it, but something just clicked. I decided I wanted to take control back. I wanted to be a happier, healthier, prettier, more confident person. I went back to the gym and this time I made a plan. I thought back to my sports days and said to myself, "what did I do back then to keep in such good shape?" I moved. I was always active. Now, I knew I couldn't go back to eating like crap anymore - you can only do that for so long, then you grow up and realize your body can't handle that any longer. So I signed up for myfitnesspal to get my eating under control, and attacked the gym. I started by getting my butt moving!! So, I was on the treadmill, elliptical, bike, row machine - anything to get my body moving. BUT I knew that wouldn't cut it, so I also took some strength training group classes. I started to see results, but I wanted more. I took what knowledge I had from my athlete days to start weight training. I did research on the best things to do to build muscle and lose weight. I tried everything in the gym. Before I knew it, other members were coming up to me asking me for help and the gym owners asked me to run classes. I was feeling really awesome! To cut a long story short - I left my marketing job, left my crappy boyfriend at the time, and pursued my passion! By the way, during that time, I found a pretty awesome guy (who I am now married to) that was very supportive of my career change! I wouldn't have had the guts to do it without him. Now every day I wake up and I am happier than ever! I love what I do, I am constantly learning new things, and I love working with all of my clients - they are the best!
