When our house was built, the electrical outlet for our dryer wasn't installed properly or securely causing the drywall around it to collapse. Jose knew exactly what was wrong and how to fix it before arriving. He went out of his way to fit me in his schedule and fixed it the same day. He is very knowledgeable and I would definitely hire him again for future projects. His work is impeccable and the laundry room drywall looks better than when we bought the house. Thank you Jose.

I submitted my request to thumbtack early on a Sunday expecting the 24-hour turnaround and he responded with a quote in just a few hours. He offered a very competitive rate compared to some other people I had looked into. My wiring needs were pretty difficult given the insulation in my walls and after some difficulties on the first day he came back the next day with Chris and some additional equipment in order to get the job done. He did not charge me extra for the equipment he needed or the second day which was a big plus for me as I was working with a pretty tight budget. They stayed late on the second day to complete the work and I am very pleased with the results. I would definitely recommend Jeremy to anyone looking for home theater wiring or electrical work. They were both very professional, courteous, and a pleasure to work with.

A contractor who arrives as promised, gives a fair and reasonable estimate, then completes work quickly and efficiently is very rare. Nick Gillaspie is that contractor. At my house he repaired and stained a deck, changed out a ceiling fan, hung ceiling medallions, changed chandelier in foyer and hung tapestry and huge wall hanging and left all areas in pristine condition. I would not hesitate to recommend him for any project he wants to tackle.

Bob was the contractor for my kitchen remodel. He went out of his way to make sure that every thing went smoothly and the work was done properly. As an extra "treat" he worked everything so that we were really without w passable and workable kitchen for only a couple of days. Great person to work with and I highly recommend him.

Ben was a pleasure to deal with from beginning to end! We had purchased a home and had the walls, ceiling, trim, doors and mantle painted in the entry way, kitchen, living rm, dining rm, hallway and main bath. His crew did an excellent job on patching the walls first, painting and clean up. The crew was professional and courteous and went above and beyond with a leak in the bathroom sink (That was not on the job list). Andy noticed the pipe under the sink was leaking and went out to his truck to get teflon tape to make the repair and advised us that that would help stop the leak but to replace the p trap. In this day and age it is hard to come by contractors that do the job they are hired for let alone go above and beyond…But that’s just what Ben’s crew did!! The house looks amazing and it was seamless, stress free and done on time! Ben communicates through the entire process and makes you feel like you are his only customer. We also had all the carpets cleaned and they look beautiful! I will definitely be hiring Ben again for other projects and have already recommended him to friends and relatives. Buying a home and doing renovations can be very stressful and Ben made it completely stress free. Hire Ben and his crew and you will not be disappointed!!

Jonathan and his crew did an outstanding job on a fairly complex wall removal and structural support project. Jonathan himself was very professional, responsive and easy to work with. The guys on his crew were knowledgeable, polite and hard working. Pricing was reasonable. The most impressive part was how quickly they got the work done. The job was quoted by other contractors to take at least 2 weeks and Salazar Express got it completely done and cleaned up in 3 days. I will definitely hire them in the future for other remodel jobs on my rental houses.

Bruce was friendly, courteous, very thorough, and did a great job. He worked in my house for 2 1/2 days, with no one home, running wire in the ceiling to install ceiling fans in the room ceiling centers, in rooms where there were no ceiling light fixtures. He repaired the Sheetrock where he had to cut into the ceiling in such good fashion that at this point I don't even need to paint. It was a pleasure doing business with someone so competent and trustworthy. I'd recommend him to anyone.

Tom provided a competitive bid and followed up during the decision process. He defined the start date and was on time with the supplies necessary to complete the job. We had a 55' privacy fence built andTom finished this in 1 1/2 days. The work was excellent and the cleanup was superb (probably in better condition than when he started). Would definitely recommend this contractor.

Dan and his team are AMAZING and I feel so grateful to have found them! They are excited to work on my home which included almost an entire remodel...Removing walls in the kitchen for an open floorpan, completely remodeling the kitchen, moving a bathroom, moving the laundry room upstairs and creating a mudroom in it's place. Building into unused attic space to create a walk in closet and bathroom in my daughter's bedroom and remodeling and rearranging our master bathroom. Not to mention all the new flooring, cabinets, and drywall where there was once popcorn ceilings. And they were EXCITED to do it. Most people I interviewed were overwhelmed at the task or WAY too expensive. He was priced fairly yet the work quality is far superior to other remodeled homes I have seen. Don't even waste your time with other companies. I love that I felt like we were working together as a team and he was always willing to spend time with me making sure I felt comfortable with each step!

After meeting with several other drywall contractors that wouldn't return our calls and no-showed for several appointments, we were at the end of our rope. This was my first time trying thumbtack, and I was a bit nervous about the whole process. Roberto did a GREAT job with our project! He came out quickly to give us a quote, which was very reasonable. He also worked with us to schedule the work to be done on a weekend so we wouldn't have to take off from work. We needed a 6x8 ft section of both ceiling and wall drywall hung (we had taken it down to fix some things). We also scraped all the popcorn off our entire downstairs ceiling and wanted to go with a flat finish but needed it to be skim coated/sanded down. We were very happy that he let us DIY what we could, and then finished up where we left off. The ceiling and new drywall looks amazing, we are so happy we worked with Roberto, we would definitely recommend him!

Fine Finishes helped to improve upon some previous work from other contractors and painters that wasn't up to my expectations. Upon giving me an estimate for the initial work, the owner indicated he could begin immediately (and he did!). Having seen the quality of their initial work, I have since engaged this company for additional repair and painting. They've done a range of work for me now, all of which I'm very happy with. Their work ranged from interior wall, ceiling and trim painting, cabinet refinishing to exterior siding washing, replacement and painting. They were even able to repair and paint some minor wood damage on my windows as well as hang a new light fixture. The owner and his team put a lot of pride into their work, something I wish more of the contractors I'd worked with did. Highly recommended!

In early May 2016, I purchased laminate flooring from a big box store North of Charlotte, NC. I was on a very tight budget and didn’t have the luxury of purchasing their installation package. After all the purpose of buying from a big box store is to do it yourself to save money. Preparing to lay just over 1600 square feet of the laminate is daunting. By the end of June, it proved to push my daughter of 16 years and myself past our abilities both in experience and time to do it. My daughter is trying to complete three summer classes pushing her to spend 9-12 hours a day studying while I work to make a living. We just weren’t making any progress. It’s not often I make a recommendation for a business, but when someone goes way above and beyond, I feel it deserves a note of respect and commendation. From the moment I met you by phone conversation you were caring, professional and offered field knowledge directly relating to our concerns and issues my daughter and I had encountered during our attempts to get started. I was additionally impressed by your willingness to work with our already purchased flooring, tight budget and our hope to continue to be part of the installation process by clearing rooms, removing carpet and nail strips, and disposing of carpet and nail strips. The arrangement made it possible for us to afford the help your company was willing to offer. It’s challenging, if not impossible, to find a contractor willing to tailor the bill to fit your budget in the way that you have for done for us. You’re genuinely helpful, caring and professional. Sincerely, Homeowner

Completed 1,500 sq ft basement. Roberto oversees the work of multiple crews - hangers/mudders. Quote did not include supplies, "stacking" drywall in the location, or disposal of remnants. Some suppliers will stack for a fee, or he can add it to your quote. Nevertheless, quote was very reasonable, even with additional stacking fee. Okay, it was downright a steal compared to other all-in-one contractors. (GCs charge 2x for the same work). His crews are full-time drywallers - they were incredibly quick, efficient, and the final results are top notch. Only downside is that they're busy - so you have to be a bit flexible on timing (guys worked Saturdays). You have to be cognizant that most of the workers I met speak minimal english. It wasn't an issue for me as it gave me an excuse to practice my Spanish, and Roberto would handle any discussions with the crews. Final thought - look elsewhere if you don't want to get your hands a little dirty. I'm sure there's a AAA place willing to take your money.

Alex, has real concern for the quality of his work and what the customer wants, and how to deliver. Alex has his wife working with him, doing clean up and making sure the our home is kept as clean as possible while have dry wall and trim work done inside. Alex is good at everything he does, and he painted our home inside in 2 two days from the ceiling to the base board. I would recommend Alex to any one who is looking for a good contractor for home remodeling.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
