Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

Chris is the best electrician I have ever worked with. Very patient, high skilled, polite. To find a breaker for our EV charging station. He spent several hours to search around 4 stores nearby and always keeps us posted. I would definitely recommend Chris to my friends who needs an electrician.

Two outlets in the garage were not working. The electrician checked the outlets, and immediately found the problem. A wire was disconnected. He reconnected it, and the problem was resolved. He was very polite and helpful. Would recommend MJ's to friends and neighbors.

This electrician David (his picture shown in profile circle) picked a Wednesday to come to do my project, then he texted asking to delay until Friday citing he's behind on another project. He promised to be there on Friday. Well, sure enough he didn't show up on Friday. Didn't respond to my text and phone call. He totally lost his credibility. And worse yet, he lost potential future projects that I would give him provided he completed this first one. I got other electrical projects both from my home and my workplace. I recommend to go with other electricians!!!

Hired on 9/8/15. He arrived on time and was very professional . I had a outlet that was wired improperly and he fixed it in under 30 min. His pricing was fair and I would definitely hire again. Overall I would recommend him to anyone needing a good electrician.

Miguel responded quickly and was able to accommodate my evening schedule. Miguel provided a free consultation and his estimate was very reasonable. When Miguel arrived to complete the work he was prepared and fast. I was impressed by the quality of his work and he took the time to clean up and make sure everything was returned to normal. Miguel is now officially my go-to electrician and I would eagerly recommend to anyone.

Bill came out extremely quickly when we had an issue with a breaker that kept tripping. He quickly discovered the problem (due to a subcontractor electrician who did extremely poor work when my kitchen was recently remodeled) and fixed it. He also went above and beyond by pointing out some other problems, so he fixed those as well. We’d definitely use him again.

I can't say enough positive things about my experience with Energy X Electric. From when I put my request on here to having someone come out to give me an estimate and return to complete the job was less than 24 hours. They responded extremely fast, kept me in the loop throughout the entire process, remained very professional, honored our agreed upon scheduled time, was affordable and provided quality work. Ryan, the guy that did the work kept a clean work environment and cleaned up after the job was done. He also walked me through what he had done before leaving. I would definitely recommend this company to anyone looking for an electrician and will use them again for future projects.

Beyond measure, Ryan’s work was amazingly awesome! He’s a technical guru with not only breadth, but depth! My list was long and painful yet Ryan tackled it like the true professional that he is! Ryan installed new electrical wiring and mounted my Ring Floodlight Camera (through brick), hard-wired and installed my Ring Doorbell Pro (new transformer and wiring!!!), created new power outlets and mounted two flat screen TVs (and I’m not talking about that cheap data kit type wiring crap, Ryan is a true electrician and he wired and installed a brand new power outlet directly behind my TV!!! No exposed wires! Just my beautiful tv on the wall with all the wiring and accessories hidden!!!) But that’s not all, he also mounted my outdoor tv through the brick!!!! I wanted my ceiling fan installed in the movie room, but instead of misleading me just to get the money, Ryan assessed the existing lighting mount area and beam and advised that the existing light fixture area is not ceiling fan capable!!!! Talk about integrity!!!! I love this guy!!!! I’m a customer for life!!!! Who needs a husband when Ryan makes house calls!!!!! And, his fees are extremely reasonable!!!! This guy is amazing!!!! Did I mention Ryan went the extra mile a even changed out the screws on the tv mounts of my three TVs!!!! (Previous tech used the wrong type screws and my TVs were barely mounted!!!) Ryan, THANK YOU! We appreciate you and your dedication to amazing work!!!!
