TERILYN G. says, "DaQuawn at Coleman Design Company. He completely transformed my downstairs living room, kitchen, and dining area with all new furniture, paint, countertops, and appliances—it truly feels like a brand new place. He took my original bright red and neutral gray color palette and elevated it into a rich, deep, and sophisticated look, while incorporating my perspictures and art. DaQuawn is friendly, warm, and really listens. He was patient and helpful while working with me through a few back-and-forths to find the right couch and was always accessible throughout the process. I will absolutely use Coleman Design Company again and highly recommend them."See more

Kathleen A. says, "We had the absolute pleasure of working with Morgan Wise (Morgan Kay Interiors) during our recent move, and we can’t recommend Morgan highly enough! One of the most impressive aspects of her work was how seamlessly she integrated our existing furniture with carefully selected new pieces to create a space that feels completely fresh, cohesive, and uniquely us. Morgan has an incredible eye for design and balance. Morgan understood the sentimental value and character of our older furniture and managed to make everything work together in a way that elevated the entire space. The result is a home that feels warm, intentional, and beautifully put-together—without ever feeling staged or impersonal. Beyond her talent, Morgan was a joy to work with: communicative, thoughtful, and incredibly organized. She listened to our ideas, respected our budget, and delivered beyond our expectations.   Morgan was so responsive and even after the home project was completed, has continued to provide advice and suggestions to our random questions.  I highly recommend Morgan Kay Interiors.  You will not be disappointed.  Thanks to Morgan for her expertise."See more

Sandy D. says, "January 2026 – Elite Exteriors just completed replacing my old, rotting deck. I am so happy with their customer service and attention to detail – their thorough and honest evaluation of my project – the professionalism, work ethic and knowledge of the entire company and crew – their patience with me as they respected my needs and answered all of my questions – and how well they communicated with me during the entire process. This locally owned company was very conscientious and I highly recommend them. Originally, as I was shopping for my project, I was drawn to Elite Xterior’s Facebook page as they are “100% recommended” and have excellent reviews. Elite Exteriors has over 15 years of experience, is licensed and insured, offers a free estimate, and posts quality photos of their jobs before and after. Mike was the salesman that came to my house first. He took the time to inspect my deck thoroughly – including evaluating the condition of the floorboards, floor joists, support posts, railings and steps. This was important to me as I knew Elite Xteriors did more than just decks – so they would notice and take care of any unforeseen problems, not ignore them as some companies might do. Mike even noticed my gutters were leaking – something none of the other companies saw when they came over to give me an estimate. I was able to get that fixed under my warrantee – easy peezy! I really appreciated Mike’s explaining the pros and cons of a wood VS a composite deck – describing how many years each would last VS environmental sustainability VS maintenance required VS overall cost. Additionally, he compared the pros and cons of each of the 3 major composite brands for traction when wet, heat resistance in summer, cost, warrantee, customer complaints, warping or fading, etc. We reviewed layout and design options, railing and color choices, quality of materials, construction training for their crews, and updating everything to code. The estimate was emailed with a detailed line-by-line cost breakdown (unlike other companies I met with for estimates) and the cost held true throughout the job until the end. Payment options and payment schedule were presented so that there were no surprises. I was able to call the composite manufacturer for free color samples – and even they said Elite Xteriors was an exceptionally good company, and I would be very happy with their customer service – that was very reassuring to hear! The Project Manager, Maegan, came over next to re-review all the details and measurements, set up materials and dumpster delivery dates, and schedule install dates – keeping to the timeline as promised. She was respectful of my wildlife friendly yard, and we discussed specific details about the finished product being safe for the backyard critters. Probably an unusual request, but very important to me. The crew arrived on time every day – working thru the entire icy cold week Raleigh just experienced. They were respectful of my property and cleaned up well each day. They tolerated my need to recycle as much of the extra materials, cardboard boxes, plastic, and metal scraps as possible. Alfredo Jr was my exceptional crew leader. David and his brothers, Arnold and Jorge, were my exceptional crew. I really enjoyed watching them work as they were so conscientious – noticing every detail with a good eye for balance – leveling, centering, double checking placement and measurements etc. They obviously enjoy their work and take pride in what they are doing. The crew noticed, evaluated, and repaired the unexpected wood rot on the ledger board under the window and band board under the door. They removed the insufficient flashing and replaced it with the proper flashing to prevent the problem from reoccurring. The few Hardie Plank siding boards that needed to be removed were replaced – exactly matching the style I have – and the new seams were caulked. My sister is an architect, so I showed her photos of the damage and the repair process. She stopped by my house – totally impressed that they were doing everything so well! The crew remembered each concern I mentioned about particulars I still had questions about – and took the time to discuss each one with me before cutting and installing. I really appreciated their patience with me, especially as we went over the railing details. Owners, Eric and Brian, stopped over to personally check on my project and to do a final walk through when it was completed. Overall, I was totally impressed with everything from start to finish. I look forward to finding a pretty doormat, putting pots of spring flowers on the new deck, and hosting a party!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
