They came out to fix some cracks in the drywall, do some painting, and re-caulk the bathroom. It all turned out nicely.

When our house was built, the electrical outlet for our dryer wasn't installed properly or securely causing the drywall around it to collapse. Jose knew exactly what was wrong and how to fix it before arriving. He went out of his way to fit me in his schedule and fixed it the same day. He is very knowledgeable and I would definitely hire him again for future projects. His work is impeccable and the laundry room drywall looks better than when we bought the house. Thank you Jose.

You can't do better than Gillaspie Handyman Building & Maintenance. Nick Gillaspie is a true professional with an artist's eye. He recently completed a job for our family, rebuilding our house in Dilworth which was over 100 years old and in very rough condition. Before we started with Nick, a real estate agent told us that it was a tear-down. Now that Nick has finished his work, it's structurally sound and beautiful. As someone who's done a little bit of construction and carpentry myself, I know good work when I see it. Nick can do just about anything in the building trades himself and do it well: frame and finish carpentry, drywall, flooring, tile work, painting, roofing, landscaping. But, when extra help is needed, he hires the best. His crews are mature, very hard working and fun to hang out with. Nick himself is a pleasure to work with, a really nice guy with a good sense of humor. He's a family man with a serious work ethic. He talked through different possibilities for solving construction problems and cleared every major decision with me in advance. He worked hard to find the least expensive solution to problems that could have been costly. And he came up with creative ideas for how to make a very old house not just functional, but a real pleasure to look at and live in. I'd work with him again any time, for any kind of job. If you're looking for someone for any job, large or small, and would like a reference about Nick Gillaspie and Gillaspie Handyman Building & Maintenance, please email me at sikahn@bellsouth.net with your phone number, and I'll give you a call.

We had BWH do interior painting and trim, repair drywall from roof leaks, replace rotted exterior trim, and paint all of the exterior trim and some stucco areas. Ben's team of Ronald, Luis and Fabio were easy to work with. They arrived on time and cleaned-up after themselves each day. They were professional, kind and good at what they do. They are skilled at cutting in with the brush and painting nice clean lines around trim. They covered floors and furniture while they painted. There were no accidents. I would recommend BWH for you next interior/exterior painting project. Here's is a smart tip... Be certain of your paint colors before the painting begins. Do not assume a paint color you saw in a friend's home or on a paint card will look the same in your space. The amount of natural light coming into a room can completely change the color. Spend time to buy and apply various samples directly on your walls. Once you are certain of the paint color and sheen you want, then schedule BWH to come paint your walls. It will be done quick and look great! Thank you!! :)

John did a good job on our drywall project. We had him finish mudding and sanding drywall throughout our main room, laundry room and ceiling. He was thorough and responded to anything we needed fixed or tweaked. He finished in 3 days, just like he said, and the price was the same as he estimated even though he had to use some extra materials / do a few extra spots of work. Very friendly, definitely recommend.

Dan and his team are AMAZING and I feel so grateful to have found them! They are excited to work on my home which included almost an entire remodel...Removing walls in the kitchen for an open floorpan, completely remodeling the kitchen, moving a bathroom, moving the laundry room upstairs and creating a mudroom in it's place. Building into unused attic space to create a walk in closet and bathroom in my daughter's bedroom and remodeling and rearranging our master bathroom. Not to mention all the new flooring, cabinets, and drywall where there was once popcorn ceilings. And they were EXCITED to do it. Most people I interviewed were overwhelmed at the task or WAY too expensive. He was priced fairly yet the work quality is far superior to other remodeled homes I have seen. Don't even waste your time with other companies. I love that I felt like we were working together as a team and he was always willing to spend time with me making sure I felt comfortable with each step!

I hired Eric to fix a large hole in my garage ceiling that occurred from broken drywall. He was immediately responsive with a great quote. He came out at the exact agreed time and was done very quickly. The work was excellent and I don't expect to have that problem again in that spot! Highly recommend and will definitely use again in the future once something else inevitable breaks in my house!

I hired Ricardo to finish removing wallpaper and popcorn ceiling in my master bath after I realized I started a job I could not finish. His price was fair and included the painting of walls and ceiling. There was an issue that popped up while he was removing the wallpaper, the drywall was peeling due to how it had been applied, so he had to do some repairs which added to time and cost but I felt the additional cost was completely reasonable. I've already given his information to a friend for when she's ready to have some work done in her home. I would definitely recommend and will use again. As a matter of fact, when he came back to patch up a stubborn part on the ceiling I asked for a quote to install a new shower stall door and he did it for me today at a very reasonable price. This is my new go-to guy for repairs and renovations.

Completed 1,500 sq ft basement. Roberto oversees the work of multiple crews - hangers/mudders. Quote did not include supplies, "stacking" drywall in the location, or disposal of remnants. Some suppliers will stack for a fee, or he can add it to your quote. Nevertheless, quote was very reasonable, even with additional stacking fee. Okay, it was downright a steal compared to other all-in-one contractors. (GCs charge 2x for the same work). His crews are full-time drywallers - they were incredibly quick, efficient, and the final results are top notch. Only downside is that they're busy - so you have to be a bit flexible on timing (guys worked Saturdays). You have to be cognizant that most of the workers I met speak minimal english. It wasn't an issue for me as it gave me an excuse to practice my Spanish, and Roberto would handle any discussions with the crews. Final thought - look elsewhere if you don't want to get your hands a little dirty. I'm sure there's a AAA place willing to take your money.

I liked the Work Quality, Professionalism, Responsiveness, Value and Punctuality of Jay Drywall and Painting Remodeling. Jackson Chavez, Professional Clean and Safety On July 10, 11 and 12, 2018 Jackson Chavez, Supervisor and two men came to my 1,320 square feet townhouse and painted every interior room including the garage. The whole process of getting my townhouse painted was handled in a very professional manner. I live in my townhouse and they moved and replaced the heavy furniture with no problem. The two men patched all small nail wholes and painted. The two men did a very good job by painting on the walls only. The price that was charged to me was also very fair and reasonable. I would hire Jackson Chavez and his team again. A job very well done. This review is from Teresa of Rock Hill, South Carolina.

Stanley is a very personable and professional person who truly enjoys the awesome work he does. The time he took to present me with an estimate was quick and very fair. After he completed my island, it was simply a 'WOW' moment and I am totally impressed with his work. He knew what was needed and did a fantastic job. I would highly recommend him to anyone who would like to change your a room, area, with wood that can be taken down at a later date without ripping up the drywall.

The Patch Boys helped re-drywall my kitchen ceiling for me and did an excellent job. The kitchen ceiling had literally fallen down and they not only fixed the whole ceiling so it was better than it had been originally, but left the kitchen spotless when they left.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
