We had a great experience with Christie's home maintenance! They responded very quickly, were able to fix our problem the day after we contacted them, they did great work, were honest and were affordable. Jon even noticed and fixed some loose shingles on our roof while he was here without charging us. We had a small issue that needed to be fixed a few days after they finished our project and Jon came out the same day I called to make the repair. It's great to find a contractor that is reliable, honest, thorough, and quick to respond and we plan on continuing to contact Christie's home maintenance for any future home repairs we have.

Kelvin and his crew did a phenomenal job. We were over run w leaves from all of our trees and he cleaned up all of them and some brush and downed limbs. He was very flexible, professional and did the job he said he would do. I will be hiring him again once we decide what to do with our landscaping. If you hire Black Diamond Lawn Service you won't be disappointed.

You can't do better than Gillaspie Handyman Building & Maintenance. Nick Gillaspie is a true professional with an artist's eye. He recently completed a job for our family, rebuilding our house in Dilworth which was over 100 years old and in very rough condition. Before we started with Nick, a real estate agent told us that it was a tear-down. Now that Nick has finished his work, it's structurally sound and beautiful. As someone who's done a little bit of construction and carpentry myself, I know good work when I see it. Nick can do just about anything in the building trades himself and do it well: frame and finish carpentry, drywall, flooring, tile work, painting, roofing, landscaping. But, when extra help is needed, he hires the best. His crews are mature, very hard working and fun to hang out with. Nick himself is a pleasure to work with, a really nice guy with a good sense of humor. He's a family man with a serious work ethic. He talked through different possibilities for solving construction problems and cleared every major decision with me in advance. He worked hard to find the least expensive solution to problems that could have been costly. And he came up with creative ideas for how to make a very old house not just functional, but a real pleasure to look at and live in. I'd work with him again any time, for any kind of job. If you're looking for someone for any job, large or small, and would like a reference about Nick Gillaspie and Gillaspie Handyman Building & Maintenance, please email me at with your phone number, and I'll give you a call.

Ben was a pleasure to deal with from beginning to end! We had purchased a home and had the walls, ceiling, trim, doors and mantle painted in the entry way, kitchen, living rm, dining rm, hallway and main bath. His crew did an excellent job on patching the walls first, painting and clean up. The crew was professional and courteous and went above and beyond with a leak in the bathroom sink (That was not on the job list). Andy noticed the pipe under the sink was leaking and went out to his truck to get teflon tape to make the repair and advised us that that would help stop the leak but to replace the p trap. In this day and age it is hard to come by contractors that do the job they are hired for let alone go above and beyond…But that’s just what Ben’s crew did!! The house looks amazing and it was seamless, stress free and done on time! Ben communicates through the entire process and makes you feel like you are his only customer. We also had all the carpets cleaned and they look beautiful! I will definitely be hiring Ben again for other projects and have already recommended him to friends and relatives. Buying a home and doing renovations can be very stressful and Ben made it completely stress free. Hire Ben and his crew and you will not be disappointed!!

Justin, Dave, Brandon, and the rest of the Landscaping division did an excellent job and were a pleasure to work with. Their design ideas really worked well with my smaller yard. The hardscape addition was exactly what was imagined, and was an excellent addition. Overall, very pleased and would recommend.

Stoney Wilson with Charlotte Pavers & Stone did a great job with explaining the issues we had with our patio and where the concrete pad was to be poured. We're located on a corner lot and the back yard slops some and the street side slops a great deal. Could be an issue with concrete truck but Stoney said it could be done. Another issue we had is the pad size was a small pour and he would have to fit it in with his other jobs. We had no issues with Stoney's schedule due to the concrete pad size. When they came and poured the concrete, the forms were pulled and dirt filled in the minor spots where the forms were. Yard looks great, like the pad was there when house was built. Stoney did explain the concrete is still green, still curing and hardening, which would take about a week. Don't drag furniture or other heavy items during cure time because it will leave permanent marks. Stoney was great and I would recommend him for any small or big job. Like Stoney said no job is too small. We really appreciate that he took on our small job when no other contractor would consider us. Stoney was very professional, explained everything, his guys cleaned up after themselves. Our neighbors noticed his work immediately and inquired and several are considering contacting him. We recommend Stoney and would use him again.

We were absolutely thrilled with Paul and his team. A tree fell on our garage and completely destroyed the roof, so I wrote to several contractors on ThumbTack to find a contractor to do the repairs. Paul responded very quickly, set up a time to survey the damage right away, and had an estimate of repair costs to me by that same evening. He corresponded with our insurance representatives to work out any discrepancies between their estimate and his, and as a result they agreed to pay for the full cost of the repairs with no issue. Paul and his guys worked extremely quickly to get the repairs done; I was honestly blown away by how much progress they made once they started working! Additionally, my neighbor, who is a sweet old guy that's restored many, many homes on his own, made a point of telling me that he'd kept a close eye on the repairs as they were being done and was happy to report that Paul's Contracting had done a very good job, in his opinion. Additionally, Paul is just a real nice guy and was extremely professional and courteous throughout. I highly, highly recommend hiring this company.

It is rare these days to find a contractor with so much passion and professionalism. We hired Steve to do landscape lighting for our front of house and the entire backyard around our pool, etc. From the first meeting, I knew we had found a gem. He came up with a fantastic design for our yard and house, helped us save money on the product and worked tirelessly until it was perfect. His work ethic is second to none and he takes amazing pride in his work. He spent three times the amount of time on our project than I expected because he was so detail oriented and wouldn't let himself settle for anything but perfection. He even re worked the system a couple of times because it wasn't up to his extremely high standards. He is honest, ethical, professional and a really nice guy. I highly recommend Accent Landscape Lighting to anyone who wants their yard to look amazing at a great value. Best contractor I have worked with in a long time! We are really enjoying the new outdoor space he helped us create! Call me for more details David Medlock 704-619-7773

Very pleased, contacted them for yard work which was not a conventional maintenance schedule, most contractors were willing to do the project, however, would raise the price once they were told it wasn't a weekly project....not this company. They went off what I wanted and when I wanted it and was more than easy to communicate with. Payment was easy, the lawn looks wonderful and I plan to continue to use them Wonderful experience, high recommend.

Kyle (owner) takes a LOT of pride in his work and is very flexible to make sure the client is happy. This was our very first landscaping project and we were apprehensive about spending the money and now I am a lifer. I wouldn't use anyone else!

We hired Mitcho Contractors to help us with refinishing a wood floor and replacing a linoleum floor. He provided us with people who were very experienced. However, before we had the work done my sister and I realized that the floors we had in the 70 year old house were okay after we had them properly cleaned and did not need to have the wooden floors refinished or the other floor replaced. We would recommend Mitchco for others in need of assistance doing work they need done and we will feel good about calling him again ourselves if we need work done. Very professional. I liked his knowledge of how to get the job done and done well.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
