Steve Is truly a Craftsman! I hired him to complete a very large built in project involving many cuts ton's of paint and exacting carpentry. He was able to nail the job! Steve was accurate, showed up when he said he would, was fairly priced, very friendly, hard working, eager to please, made corrections with no complaints at all, even when they were not his fault. This guy is not only skilled at what he does but he is also very professional and aims to please. I have already started working on another larger job with him and also recommended him to a neighbor who is also interested in hiring him. Thank you Steve!!!

When the home improvement store just doesn't cut it, call on Erin. I started building a vertical herb garden, a very simple project, for a friend's wedding, and it was coming down to the wire when I realized I was missing a tool: a $100 drill press for the hole saw I bought. Desperately I looked online but buying an expensive tool I'll probably never use again was no solution, and anyone willing to lend it gave quotes through the nose. Lowes didn't have one in store. Erin came by the day after I posted here, cut the holes in the wood I needed, and saved me hours of work with his power sander! He was great to work with, friendly and responsive, and I would definitely hire him for any bigger carpentry projects in future. Thanks for saving my hide! Now I won't have to present the new husband+wife with an I.O.U. as a gift.

Outstanding customer experience with Scott @ Millwork Solutions. He rebuilt our deck using timbertech and did gorgeous work. Very competitive on price but quality of work was our first concern and he did a fantastic job. Would definitely recommend his work and he's the first builder i'll call when we have additional carpentry work for the house. Great experience!

HI! I am writing in support of Ground Up Construction. About 8 months ago my father, who is 94, and a retired carpenter, had an incident with a raccoon. The raccoon ate through the floor of his laundry room looking for a place to stay for the winter. This did an incredible amount of damage. I placed a call for bid on Thumbtack and got an immediate response from Ryan Todd at Ground Up Construction. They came up and took a look at the damage and gave a detailed bid. They were by far the most professional of the company's that spoke to us about the job and gave the most complete materials list and labor expenses. They spoke to my father about what they thought would need to be done and discussed with him what problems they might encounter. As my father put it, "they are going to do what I would do, if I could have done the work." Two weeks later they were on the job. The job was done quickly and finished on budget. These men are all thoroughly competent professionals with plenty of experience. I highly recommend them for any carpentry that you might need. Mike Lopp 336-784-8760

Marshall fixed a broken couch in the waiting area of my office. He was prompt and courteous. All in all, I am generally pleased with his work. I just wished he had covered my hardwood floors before starting the work (to prevent scratches) and cleaned up after his work was done. I would use him again, however, for general carpentry needs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
