I have used Good Housekeeping for my move out cleaning from my previous townhouse and again for household cleaning in my current place. I was thoroughly impressed by his friendly nature and efficiency in getting the job done. My entire townhouse was immaculate in under three hours and that included my oven being cleaned (I'm a heavy baker). He even made my bed! I would recommend his services to anyone in or near the Triad area. Top notch service for a more than reasonable price. I am now a happy monthly client. My busy life and schedule are more than pleased! -Shakiera, college professor and doctoral student

We hired Jacob for a very daunting task. Our yard had not been maintained at all since we moved in, in October of last year- certainly the product of a 2 women household. It was over run by weeds, the plants were growing rampant, and it was so bad, that we couldn't even pick up after our dogs because the weeds were literally waist high. We thought we would never get someone out here to take care of it for a price we could afford. Then, Jacob responded to our thumbtack, like a landscaping angel. We left our backyard gate open for him to come in and do the work as he needed while we were at work. When my wife returned home, she was amazed and immediately sent me a picture. To say I was impressed is the understatement of the year. Our yard is no longer an utter embarrassment to our home. We can now leave the shades open and feel proud of our property, and maybe even break out that corn hole set!! We plan to hire Jacob as our regular lawn maintenence person and we will tell all of our friends about him. He was honest, professional, and very affordable. We look forward to working with him for years to come!

All work completed on budget and finished two days earlier than we expected. Arrived on time, and he was able to focus on tasks in spite of our sometimes interference with our own household tasks.Bryan made sure that everything was completed and double checked, including clean up before he left the site.

Our garbage disposal stopped working. He was able to repair vs. replace by removing jammed item. Took less than one half hour. He was prompt in answering email, and charged a great price. Was very knowledgeable, easy to work with, flexible in scheduling, and on time. We will use him again for other household maintenance/repair items.

Anthony was great and easy to talk with. John, Greg, & Chris came to the house to pack and then move our household items to storage. These guys were awesome. They did a fantastic job of packing our stuff and then moving it out of the house and onto the truck. There were a couple of extremely heavy pieces of furniture on the 2nd floor and getting down the stairs which had a turn was extremely difficult. These guys took their time and made sure they did the job properly without any damage. My wife and I had underestimated the packing and move. John, Greg & Chris were awesome in working with us to get this job done especially considering the time crunch and situation that we were in. They went that extra mile to help us out. Thank you very much guys for a fantastic job. Highly recommend these guys.

Renee has been a valuable addition to our household in helping me keep our large house (with eight cats) clean while I'm busy with my volunteer rescue work. Several injuries have made it difficult for me to perform many tasks, and Renee has been a timely God-send in taking care of everything for me. I recommend her to anyone who needs a good cleaning professional.

We are a dual working family with one child and "My Helpful Friend" is exactly what we need to keep our household manageable. We selected the pieces of our life that were becoming too much to manage on the weekends--laundry, plant care, house cleaning, and small errands. Katrina and her team help us with these in a professional and dependable manner. In addition to these tangibles, Katrina and her team are a friend to our family, they know us and our daughter and are just a pleasure to see and interact with every week....just like a helpful friend!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hiring a professional house cleaning service is a helpful way to have a healthy home even when your work and personal schedule is packed. House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets, and how often the cleaning service comes. Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $110 and $150. Prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

    What is house sitting?

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor.
