I needed some supports installed for water pipes under the house, and some floor insulation reinstalled with support wires I had on hand. Handyman did a great job, was courteous and helped me out a great deal.

I needed a handyman to repair wall tile in bath and install bath fixtures, both of which were challenging. Steve is not only great at problem solving, he's also very versatile. He not only fixed the tile and plumbing for the toilet, he installed the electric wiring for the bath; repaired ceiling damage from roof leak; repaired door frame in bath due to old fixture removal; repaired cracks in walls; painted interior and exterior of house; repaired and painted front porch. His work ethics are admirable. He is on time and cleans as each job is finished. I highly recommend Steve to anyone needing a handyman service! Thank you Steve and Zach!!

Contracted Dr. House to build a 20 x 16' deck over my existing patio. The Dr. came in and performed surgery of the highest caliber, I'm now enjoying my new out door space. The price was reasonable and the workmanship top notch. Thanks Doc.

When the home improvement store just doesn't cut it, call on Erin. I started building a vertical herb garden, a very simple project, for a friend's wedding, and it was coming down to the wire when I realized I was missing a tool: a $100 drill press for the hole saw I bought. Desperately I looked online but buying an expensive tool I'll probably never use again was no solution, and anyone willing to lend it gave quotes through the nose. Lowes didn't have one in store. Erin came by the day after I posted here, cut the holes in the wood I needed, and saved me hours of work with his power sander! He was great to work with, friendly and responsive, and I would definitely hire him for any bigger carpentry projects in future. Thanks for saving my hide! Now I won't have to present the new husband+wife with an I.O.U. as a gift.

Millwork Design was brought in to refurbish our employees architectural areas. Desks and built-ins were constructed to match our company standards. Our offices reside in an old 1906 house so the floors are more than uneven to say the very least. Our built-in's are seamless and covered this building's inadequacies beautifully. The work was done in the evening so that daily work flow was never interrupted. Thank you Scott.

Outstanding work done by LBH Creative Designs. Was always prompt and courteous and communicated well with his ideas on how to get the jobs done in a professional and efficient manner. Replaced some missing roof shingles. Modified crawl space opening by adding two courses of brick and building a new crawl space door. Dug out a drainage trench at the crawl space opening to help keep water from entering crawl space. Partial replacement of utility room walls.

We needed a floor replaced in a second bedroom. We went thru 8 different contractors, 6 wouldn't even look at the job because it was too small. Two didn't have time. We found Jonathan on Thumbtack and he responded immediately and completed the job within a week. He and his team did an excellent job. He actually found another issue and fixed it. He was very reasonable. They cleaned up after themselves to the point you wouldn't know they were there. We were very satisfied and plan on using Jonathan and his team again.

Mark built all of our kitchen cabinets, our utility room cabinets, a book shelf, and 2 China cabinets for us. The results are beautiful. Mark is an artist and a perfectionist, and it shows in his work. We looked at a lot of cabinets by others before we began our renovations, and frankly, none of them could compare to the quality of Mark's work. Moreover, he does what he says he's going to do, when he says he's going to do it, and for the amount he says it will cost. I recommend Mark without reservation and plan on enlisting his services again in the near future.

I've used RJR for replacing broken ceiling fans, installing a dedicated circuit for a new pool, fixing broken bathroom faucets, and building/installing a fenced pen for my dogs. Roger always arrives on time, works fast, and does a superb job. I now have him scheduled to re-screen my screen porch, replace kitchen faucet, install a garbage disposal, replace front door, and install pet door on the back door. I'm a widow and wary of who I allow in my home, but Roger has always been honest, professional, and polite. I won't use anyone else.

Tile Installation of Office Kitchen Backsplash; Painting Interior Walls, Ceilings, Doors, Trim, and Cabinets of Office Building. Matthew is meticulous and thorough in whatever he is doing. While offering suggestions, he understood what it was that I was trying to achieve in the backsplash. I couldn't be happier with the quality of his painting; everything looks great!! I was extremely pleased with his ability to cut in the trim, around the cabinets/doors, etc; it was beautifully done. Office Manager/Law Office

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
