I have had my share of craftsmen work for me over the years doing various jobs, large to small. I don't impress easily and have found that many of them took short cuts to save money or time and then want to overcharge you. Not this one. Bill gave me an estimate for a hidden bookshelf door. He came in and listened to what I wanted and built the door as planned. He was able to sit with me, go over the plan and offer some ideas that I haven't thought of. He stuck to the estimate exactly and didn't go over. I've never had anyone stick to their estimate, they always seem to go over for some reason or another. The door is wonderful, the workmanship excellent. Bill used quality materials in his construction. He works the entire time he is on the job site, no sitting around wasting time that you pay for. To hide an entire room in plain sight takes a lot of skill and attention to fine detail. I cant do it myself and know that. I also know that good work isn't cheap and cheap work isn't good. This is why I hired a Master Craftsman. He cleaned up the work space after the job. I've had contractors in my home that never noticed that the built-in bookshelf was actually a door or that there was a 10x12 room hidden away from sight. Trim Time delivers excellence to your home. He is very honest and I would definitely recommend him to do other jobs.

I had hardwood flooring underneath carpet in our upstairs area of our office. Others told me that it was subflooring or it would be too damaged to try to refinish. But Brian came in and was confident that these floors were salvageable!! They are absolutely gorgeous now! He loves what he does and believes in keeping hardwoods intact and keeping the original woodwork of the past. I'm glad I called.

Mark Burford's work is beyond outstanding. He is not only a superior master craftsman, but also an artist and a gentleman. In 2012 I hired Mark to design, build, install, and oversee a complete replacement of a large gourmet kitchen, which owing to the original architecture was a prominent (if not dominant) space in a high-value house in Orange County. Throughout the project, Mark was a perfectionist. His experience and talent in all the relevant fields (design, materials, woodworking, construction, management, customer service) were evident from the beginning. My kitchen space has irregular angles and my requirements posed challenges to design and fabrication. Mark met every challenge with unabashed expertise, including the challenge of steering the inexperienced homeowner away from bad ideas and suggesting good ideas instead. Mark supervised the work of the electricians, plumbers, installers of HVAC and exhaust equipment, and granite counter tops and appliances, and made the necessary adjustments on his end so that the finished product of a highly complex installation was flawless. Mark is a good leader as well as a brilliant producer. The kitchen cabinetry that Mark produced is exquisite. The precision of his measurements, and the execution of the designs in his woodworking shop continue to amaze my guests and myself to this day (2014). The cabinets feature cherry frames and birch panels, with glass-fronted lighted display cabinets and display shelving, and built-in appliances. Every installation is precise and enduring, and the finish trim is perfect. The components that Mark incorporated from other manufacturers are all of highest quality and most recent design; I should cite in particular the finely crafted dovetailed carcasses of the drawers and the superior quality of the hardware throughout the kitchen. Mark made sure that an eclectic variety of knobs and pulls that I wanted were expertly and esthetically installed, as well as practically functional. I could go on, but if you have read thus far you get the point: Wood Done Right has earned my highest commendation. Mark Burford will impart high art and master craftsmanship upon your project. And he's a really nice guy, to boot.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
