We have had only one session with Lena and have already seen amazing results with our 1 y.o. dog. Lena gives hands-on training to you and your dog. We are training our pup to be a therapy dog, and he is already well on his way to having the skills needed to pass the test. Well done Lena Skov! Glad we found you on Thumbtack!!!

About 7 years ago, we hired Fran to train our Chow puppy, who was out of control. I saw an article she had written in a magazine and was intrigued by her writings. In 2 weeks he was learning all the commands she taught US! I learned so much from her on dog behavior I suggested she have her own TV show, because she truly is better than Ceaser Milan and Victoria Stillwell. Fran doesn't use harsh training methods, she trains by the "reward method", and she LOVES her clients, she is professional, fun, and has more knowledge about training than anyone I have ever worked with! I recently rescued another Chow (named CUJO) that was his name from his previous owners and he is about 8 years old from the shelter I volunteer at and he was apparently abused and conditioned to a home with fighting, and Fran has worked with him and me to desensitize him to banging, knocking, any noise that would signify he was in an abusive environment. He also had a very negative reaction to people touching each , hugging, I had to be very careful when I got him home. He was undernourished and sick.....but now he's coming along wonderfully. HE LOVES HER and so do I. She helped me with a new diet for him for the health issues he was having. She is knowledgeable in every aspect of dog training, agression, agility, puppies, Good Canine Citizens, companion dogs and I recommend her highly. She goes out of her way to do her very best for you and your dog. She just isn't your typical "dog trainer" she absolutely loves what she does and puts 200% into her work ! I highly recommend Fran. !

If you're looking for a dog trainer, THIS IS YOUR GUY! His puppy boot camp literally worked miracles with our sassy, biting, crazy 12 we old puppy! Henry is super communicative and helpful (before, during & after training) which makes the entire process much easier! He is smart, very professional, incredibly likeable and extremely good at what he does. I also really appreciated his reward based training system. We could tell how much he loves and respects dogs by how he immediately interacted with Bailey... he was nice, but in charge. All I can say is, he left with a crazy 'cujo' puppy lol and returned with a lovable, obedient muffin! We can't thank him enough!

We had a great experience. It was very apparent our 6 month-old little beagle did too. He came home so happy. He had learned many things needed to become a good family pet. Now, if we, the humans, can follow our instructions to keep reinforcing the learning. You know, it's hard to teach an old dog (human) new tricks. Heather was great with Shylo and we would recommend her to anyone looking for super dog training.

When you love your dogs and want to ensure they are well taken care of when you travel, are at work for long days -- there is no one that I feel more confident about having at our home taking care of our Norwich Terrier and Soft Coated Wheaton. When we return -- they are happy to see us, but they follow her around. She is loving, kind and I thinks takes better loving care of them than we do as owners. We had her stay at our home for weeks -- taking care of not only our dogs, but our home and my 90+ year old mom. I highly recommend Marleen to anyone that loves their dogs as much as we do to provide pet care and house sitting. The quality of her work was outstanding. I can't think of a thing that she could have done better. When we go away -- she gives us great peace of mind knowing our place and our dogs are so well cared for.

The Grooming Lady was fantastic! She graciously accommodated two elderly dogs by traveling to their home for grooming thus elevating as much stress for them and this owner. She was very professional, thorough and efficient and they looked and smelled wonderful - can't ask for more than that! Highly recommend her!

About

My company started with a single client and is growing steadily. As clients begin to see the positive changes in their dogs; they start spreading the word. Dogs are nomadic, social animals that require daily exercise and companionship to feel fulfilled. An unfulfilled dog is a frustrated dog and frustration equals destructive behavior in every canine. But not all dogs are the same; they have different needs, different instincts and different energies. Though we are growing; our core values have remained the same and we continue to provide a personal approach to our clients and their dogs. Thanks for visiting Carolina Natural Dog, a fully licensed and insured dog training, walking and boarding service. Carolina Natural Dog was founded by Skip Skipper with the goal of providing individual attention to dogs in the Lake Norman area. Skip grew up with dogs and dedicates a significant portion of his time to canine rescue; training and rehabilitating dogs as they wait to find their forever homes. He even met his bride, another volunteer, at the Great Dane Rescue of the Carolinas.

About

Carolina Natural Dog is founded on the principles of Natural Dog Training (developed by Kevin Behan). Dogs are social by nature and they react to the world around them according to the laws of nature, not human reason. Working with a dog's energy instead of fighting against it, will allow you and your dog to achieve balance. A fundamental belief of Carolina Natural Dog is that energy is communication in its purest form. By learning to understand your dog's natural energy, you can bring out their true, cooperative and social nature. I have spent years reading, studying and implementing these techniques with my dogs, dogs at local rescues and with my clients. I have seen remarkable changes in the behavior, disposition and tendencies of dogs that were once in the throws of instability and chaos. I have trained and consulted with the leaders of the Natural Dog Training philosophy to gain knowledge from their vast experience and bring it to my life and the lives of my clients here in NC. I want to bring this amazing philosophy to you and to your dog. Together we can discover your dog's true nature.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
