Daniel came out to the house last night to fix my plumbing issue. He arrived when he said he would and was very professional and knowledgeable. He quickly diagnosed the problem as a faulty sump pump and went to work replacing the pump. We encountered several issues along the way, but Daniel kept a great attitude and did not let any problems get in his way. I was very pleased with the work and perseverance Daniel showed as well as the value for the all work he had to do. I would highly recommend Daniel for any plumbing job you might have. He is truly customer friendly and always looking for ways to save you money which I greatly appreciated. I have used thumbtack multiple time with varying degrees of satisfaction, but Daniel is 5 stars in my book and I am will definitely be calling him again with any plumbing issues.

It was a simple plumbing fix but I ended up having him do two different things on other properties: garage door replacement and water heater replacement. Marcus did a great job on all three. I appreciate his quick response and professionalism

Brian provided me with plumbing service on two toilets. He was so nice and very affordable. I was not at the property he serviced since I am just the landlord, but he kept in constant communication with me to let me know when he was going, his findings, and when he would send the invoice. I will definitely be contacting him for any future handyman needs!

James (Alan) is an absolutely masterful professional, the work was completed all within one day, over a period of a few hours. We had many projects from electrical, to plumbing, and although I did not have the correct materials, James helped me through the process and we were able to get the projects done. He stopped and started the clock only when work was being done, and he worked quickly. About 1 hour had passed and we had worked through all of the electrical issues, plumbing was somewhat more involved, but it was done quickly as well. Will definitely recommend, and plan on using him again in the future. $55 an hour is an absolute value, and James (Alan) is worth more than that

I needed a handyman to repair wall tile in bath and install bath fixtures, both of which were challenging. Steve is not only great at problem solving, he's also very versatile. He not only fixed the tile and plumbing for the toilet, he installed the electric wiring for the bath; repaired ceiling damage from roof leak; repaired door frame in bath due to old fixture removal; repaired cracks in walls; painted interior and exterior of house; repaired and painted front porch. His work ethics are admirable. He is on time and cleans as each job is finished. I highly recommend Steve to anyone needing a handyman service! Thank you Steve and Zach!!

Joe was the guy who came out to do the work, he was very professional, kind and was out the way. Considering this is a doctor's office he was very discreet and got the job done! I will most certainly use them for any other plumbing needs that we have in the future. Thanks Handy Tool Belt!!

This was my first time using Thumbtack, and I am so happy they connected me with Precision Plumbing. Marvin helped me figure the problem out on the phone, and his service manager Dan, did a great job taking care of my problem. I've already recommended them to two of my friends.

Great tile work, okay plumbing work. Didn't clamp pipe to stud, so shower arm wobbles now. Installed pex for the tub spout, should have been copper. Water wouldn't turn hot, so I had to take apart mixing valve to adjust. Overall, for tile work, I definitely would hire again.

They were a pleasure to work with - I had a general idea of what I wanted for a 2-sided fireplace and Glenn and his assistant listened and made suggestions to help me. Always had a smile, a positive attitude, and kept me informed of every step along the way. Took care of every part of the project, from start to finish. The work quality - excellent, the value - superior. I highly recommend Southeastern Gas Piping & Plumbing, Inc.

Outstanding people to work with. Very professional and easy to get along with. Gave them the keys to our house and felt perfectly comfortable doing so. They gave us a week faster service Than anyone else that quoted Us And at a very reasonable price. They completely remodeled our bathroom and installed a tile walk in shower. And they were in constant contact with us every step of the way. Would highly recommend anyone looking for any house remodeling ect to choose these guys.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

    • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
    • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
    • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
