Nick is highly skilled, really listens to what needs to be done, observant (saw things we missed) and meticulous in his work. We have experienced way too many “handyman” disasters over the years and just don’t get things done. We were thrilled to find that Nick was the “real deal”!! . We needed to have him complete our partial deck bench with an extension to also cover the hot tub. He built a perfect mirror image and it looks wonderful like it had been there forever! We also need a recently painted interior wall repaired, that the prior painter just painted over. It looked awful and Nick repaired it with “mud”, sanded and repainted. Now it looks like new and the room is beautiful. He did the work in record time, cleaned up and always pleasant. Nick is thorough, communicates well and was always on time. The other important part of “Gillaspie Handyman-Building and Maintenance” is Kimberly, Nick’s wife. She was in contact with me during the whole process with updates and follow-up. A rare commodity is this type of business. I have a list of additional jobs that I would only have Nick do for us. I wouldn’t hesitate to refer him for any new construction or home repairs. He is very talented, honest and a true professional!

Paul and his crew did an excellent job. We called Paul's company after our new house flooded due to a faulty washer. Paul replaced carpet, linoleum and wood laminate floors for us, as well as installing new tile in our kitchen. He also repaired our ceiling and dry wall and found preexisting damage to the subfloor we were able to take care of it. He was very professional and easy to get in contact with, I would definitely recommend him for future jobs.

George did everything, from shoring up the fireplace from the inside all the way to the exterior of our home. There was a lot of rot to repair. He also painted the exterior and completed a host of minor repairs with flawless skill.

We hired Chief Properties to for an inspection on a home we were thinking about purchasing. Jermey was accommodating to the time constraints we needed him and was on time. He has a vast knowledge of home construction as he is also a General Contractor. Because of his thorough insight we opted not to purchase the home and avoid a bad investment. We highly recommend his services as we believe him to be honest and fair.

Robert Smith Design created a custom home plan for us, on a challenging lakefront lot. We were extremely pleased with both the process and the results. The plan came together in a few iterations, with Robert paying close attention to our list of "must haves" and "wants," along with inserting his own creative ideas to tackle the challenges of fitting as much usable space as possible into a limited footprint. The final plan has an open, cohesive flow and perfectly matches our living style and personality.

Dan remodeled my entire home including a fabulous entire new Kitchen for my wife.He did a great job and I would recommend him to anyone who wants the job done right the first time and finished on time. He is a fine craftsman and I wish he was still here in California as I have not been able to find anyone who does as good a job as he did for us.

Doug Shore of The Starr Co. provides superior service and has extensive knowledge of the residential construction industry. The unique advantage of using The Start Co. versus other residential contractors is the personal touch Doug offers. He can provide services for small and large home improvement projects. His pricing is very competitive and far exceeded my expectations.

Chris did an excellent job at fixing my water heater. He was very knowledgeable, thorough, and did the job for a very reasonable fee. I can tell that he deeply cares about his customers and is very reliable. I was so pleased with this experience that I also hired Chris to come out next weekend to touch up my kitchen and bathroom cabinets and work on other things around the house. I would highly recommend Chris to anyone.

The owner (Jorge) came out promptly to give an estimate and was very professional, insightul, and knowledgeable. He was able to deliver a contract and start the work quickly. The crew showed up on the day the work was supposed to begin and on-time. The crew was polite, personable, respectful, and also very knowledgeable. For each day of the project, they showed up when they said they would and worked very hard. There were several issues they ran into during the construction due to the way the house was built. The owner was very responsive in telling me about the issues and offering solutions. Even though the issues they encountered were not their fault, they took ownership of them and gave me the best possible advice and options with miniminal cost increase. These were complex problems such as bad electical wiring but they handled the construction and the issues in a timely manner. Overall, the job went very well only because of the Jorge and his crew. He was always available to talk, as well as always courteous, informative and helpful. There is nothing more important than trust when you're handing over thousands of dollars and have people working in your home. Jorge earned my trust and confidence. I will be using him again for a project in the upcoming weeks and would highly recommend his company.

KPS Design took my "chicken scratch plan" of what I wanted in my next home and turned it into a 5,000 sq. ft. Custom Lake Home. It is very functional as well as comfortable and a pleasure to enjoy with family and friends.

Last summer, the men at east coast building group exceeded my expectations and built an amazing addition to my backyard deck. They designed a remarkable deck and included all my ideas as well as their own innovative ideas. Recently, I wanted to have the deck stained and they did a beautiful job with the color. The project was fast and proficient. I always call east coast building for any of my house updates, interior and exterior.

Amazing carpenters. Pictures do not do justice of the work done on our home, arbors and custom gazebo (which is a must see). They turned our average home into a home straight off a southern plantation with all the details. The goal was to have people actually believe the home was the original house on this old farm we bought. The columns, panelled porch ceilings and crown are stunning. Strangers have no idea the house is only 5 years old! We will never use any one but A Royal Touch Custom Woodworking.

Marlen Caduff has been a Godsend for me as a massage therapist. She will accommodate your difficulties and give you health advice as well. I have had a number of health problems that she has helped me with for several years. My wife and I consider her one of the most compassionate and competent health professionals that we know. However, more importantly is her expertise in her field of massage therapy and nutrition. I have had her help me with my back, knee, and neck pain due to cancer treatment. There were times when I couldn't get by without her treatments. She has even gone out of the way to help me get down and back from her studio on occasion. I owe her a lot. Thank you, Marlen! Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
