We discovered bed bugs in our daughter's bed and immediately started shopping for an exterminator. We found The Finish Line through Thumbtack and never looked back. The price Josh quoted us was very reasonable and remained the same once the job was completed. The prep work we had to do prior to their visit was extensive and we had many questions as we were preparing. Josh always responded quickly and gave us peace of mind that we were preparing correctly. Tyler was very helpful and thorough when he treated our home. The customer service they both gave us is hard to come by. We will use them again.

I contracted with Bulwark Exterminating for pest control management in our new home. I called on Friday evening, primarily to leave a message for a callback to have an estimate for long term maintenance but also to rid my new kitchen of pesky little ants. To my surprise someone answered and set an appointment for the following morning. John came on Saturday and explained the services he was going to perform. He was knowledgeable, professional and personable. I look forward to seeing his regularly to keep our home bug free. It's now Monday and we are still seeing some ants but understand it may take awhile to rid them all. I'm certain someone will be back if needed. At this point I'm pleased with Bulwark.

I called David with the mindset that our home had bed bugs. My husband had collected a bunch of little bugs around our house that I swore were bed bugs! David said he would come out and treat for them. He arrived on time. I showed him what we had collected and he said they were not bed bugs! Believe me I was ready to spend some money on getting rid of these guys, he easily could have said that they were and treated and left. But he didn't! Honesty is key to a successful business and this guy is nothing less! Turns out these bugs were only carpet Beatles and David treated for them and we purchased an annual contract with him. Very thankful for this company.

John arrived as promised and assessed the bed bug situation in the house. He did a thorough investigation and found that we were in the early stages of an infestation. He treated the entire area (the family room over the garage), even turning over furniture to get inside for complete spraying. His price includes 2 more treatments over the next month. Very pleased with his work!!

Several months ago I called Barnhill and spoke with Leonard. I was in a panic because my daughter had brought back bedbugs when she visited her BFF in Arizona. Actually “panic” puts it lightly. He was at my house within 1 1/2 hours! He educated us on how to clean her room, calmed me down, and convinced me I didn’t have to burn down my house😳. He came back the next day after we had prepared her room and treated my whole house at my request even though there were only a few bedbugs in her room. Thankfully we had caught it very early. I checked the prices with several other companies for the bedbug service and Barnhill beat them all, hands down. They offer a warranty that comes with the fee and they also offer an additional warranty but Leonard told me he really didn’t think I needed that one. I asked if they did regular maintenance and he said they did so I signed him up to do regular maintenance every 3 months. When he returned for that service he once again checked for the evil bedbugs...and not a one was to be found.😍. I highly recommend this company because they are very fairly priced and offer exceptional, timely service. Leonard is the best!!

I've used The Bug Guy to address a bed bug issue. Mr. Paul was very thorough and diligent in eradicating the problem. Mr. Paul educated me on prevention tips while navigating and explaining the process. My bug issue is no more. Unlike other companies I've inquired about, Mr. Paul cared about my family while providing an effective and economical service. I'm so grateful. Thanks again. T. Green

Audrey and David (the owner) are fantastic. I called them on a late Friday afternoon and they were at my apartment in downtown Raleigh (30 minute drive for them) by 9 a.m. the next morning. David worked very quickly and was completely honest about my issue. Rare to find that in today's society. All-in-all you cannot beat their service, attitude and price. Homerun. Don't call anyone else for pest control...especially bed bugs.

Joe and Josh we’re phenomenal. I appreciated there upfront analysis of the bed bug infestation and what they do to treat the problem. I had painters working in the house so I also very much appreciated how Joe and Josh were able to coordinate work efforts with the painters to optimize their time and make both jobs happen seamlessly. They were extremely thorough in that they had also identified a roach infestation in my kitchen and addressed the matter. I really valued their attention to detail, efficiency in their work, and their price. I would highly recommend.

John-Mark and crew are amazing. We typically have Alex service our home quarterly for pest and monthly for mosquitos. Their products are amazing, we have very little issues with bugs/spiders and if for some reason we have an issue, they're over to the house within 48 hours to reapply as necessary. Our pup ended up getting fleas while we were away. We made an emergency call to ClearDefense and again, they were over treating the house within 48 hours. They are extremely professional and their products actually work. We had the house sprayed quarterly by another company prior to switching and saw very little relief. We even started having a black widow issue. In the last few years we've been with ClearDefense I can count on one hand the amount of spiders I've found alive on our property. They're more than bug guys.

We began a quarterly pest service with Mayday a few months ago, and have been very pleased. Lance is on time (a rare quality!), and quotes reasonable, competitive rates. The work is of the highest quality, and our bug problems have basically been eliminated. Would suggest Mayday to anyone.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do pest control companies do?

Pest control companies handle all aspects of bug, rodent and animal extermination or removal. Pest control professionals visit your home or office to identify the type of pest that is troubling you and offer various treatment plans — complete with clearly outlined costs. Once you and the pest control company have a signed agreement, the pro will begin treatment. Pest treatment can range from the use of spray pesticides and gel bait to live and/or kill traps. There are a wide range of types of pesticides, many of them nontoxic for humans and other small animals. This means you may be able to have your home treated for pests without harming nearby wildlife or your dog and cat. The pest control pro will carry out the treatment plan and, depending on the service agreement, provide follow-up such as emptying traps, inspecting access points, or reapplying pesticide spray if the pests return. Costs will vary based on the type of pest you are having removed and the extent of the infestation. The average national pest control price range is $80-$130. From a minor bedbug event to an entire home termite infestation, pest control companies have got you covered.

How do you get bed bugs and how do you get rid of them?

The increase in bed bug infestations in the U.S. is a result of increased travel, lack of knowledge about preventing infestations, increased resistance of bed bugs to pesticides, and ineffective pest control practices, explains the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It’s easy to mistake bed bugs for carpet beetles or similar-looking bugs, so infestations are often not noticed when they first occur. Prevention tips include keeping areas free of clutter, regularly washing sheets and mattress covers in hot water (and don’t forget to wash the laundry bag, too), and vacuuming regularly and safely disposing of the sealed vacuum bag. Not everyone has reactions to bed bug bites, which also may be mistaken for the bites of other pests such as mosquitoes, so timely bed bug extermination depends on identification of bed bug activity. If you notice physical signs of an infestation, contact a bed bug extermination professional as soon as possible to learn about chemical and non-chemical (such as heat) treatment options. An integrated pest management plan may incorporate one or more methods.

How much does it cost to remove a mouse?

If you have a mouse in your house you’re probably quickly researching pest control costs. Mice, although tiny, can transmit diseases and also get into your food and leave unsanitary droppings around your home. If you have seen one mouse in your house, it’s likely that more have taken up residence in your crawl space, attic or basement. The national average pest control cost is $150-$200. Costs can vary depending on whether you need to get rid of a population of living mice or just dispose of a dead mouse (or full traps), how extensive the mouse population is, and where you live in the country. Here are some examples of average pest control cost for removing a mouse:

  • $150 for initial trap setup and inspection (and sealing of entry holes).
    • $50 for rodent removal service calls and emptying of traps. This visit can also include identifying and sealing entry points that were not sealed on the first visit.
  • Rodent extermination: $110-$350, depending on how heavy the rodent population is, whether the mouse infestation poses health risks, how many entrances exist and how many rodent bait stations are needed.

How much does it cost to kill bed bugs?

The cost of bed bug extermination depends primarily on how widespread the pest infestation is and how many rooms need to be treated. Other factors that can affect bed bug extermination costs are the amount of clutter in the location, additional furniture that needs to be treated, and construction of the home. Pest management professionals often have rates for room treatments, which can vary based on these factors. As an example, a pest management company treating a 10-by-15-foot room with light infestation might charge clients about $250, while the same size room with a heavy infestation and large amounts of clutter might cost the clients $300-$400. Clutter and heavier bed bug populations mean more product and longer labor time for the workers. Rates will vary from company to company, and from region to region, but the national average bed bug extermination cost is $320-$400. Bed bug heat treatments are an alternative way to exterminate these pests. Heat treatments are typically charged per square foot and tend to cost more than chemical or non-chemical spray solutions. Although effective, they are not usually recommended for occupied spaces, as the extreme temperatures can damage televisions, window dressings and other home furnishings.

How much does it cost to treat a house for termites?

Termites are not only creepy-crawly, they can literally eat your house out from underneath you. Termites feed on damp and dry wood and can chomp through your house at an alarming rate. The national average pest control cost for termite extermination is $240-$400. Treatment costs can be higher for an extensive infestation. Here are some examples of average pest control costs for termites:

  • Liquid treatment of subterranean termites: $3-$4 per linear foot.
    • For $75 per year, a company may offer a maintenance plan that provides inspection of the property and renewal of the warranty.
  • Liquid treatment of subterranean termites: approximately $400 for a 2,000-square-foot home at $3-$5 per linear foot.
    • The price is higher for additional work such as foaming and drilling inside of concrete slabs.
  • Fumigation treatment of drywood termites: $1,200-$1,500 for a 30,000- to 35,000-cubic-foot home
    • Fumigation is measured in cubic feet because it fills the airspace of the home and infiltrates the wood that the termites may be colonizing. The cost of fumigation is affected by the number of levels in the home as well as the square footage.
