Sergio was great! I needed him to come do a quick change of my ceiling fan, install a flush mount light and repair my outside porch light. Even after an unexpected long day, Sergio still made it to my house and did all the repairs since we are under a time crunch to list our house. He also took it upon himself to repair a light fixture in our home that he saw on his own, without charging me more. A very good experience and extremely reasonable pricing.

Our experience with Jim was professional and pleasant. Jim rebuilt the steps to our front porch and repaired rotten wood near our roof. To date we have had no issues with his work. Would recommend.

Mr. Sawyer was referred to me by a neighbor who had used him previously to do some work at her house. I noticed how nice their house looked after he was done and decided to hire him to power wash and fix up my porch deck. He arrived on time and was polite and professional. He carefully listened to what I wanted done and we decided together that he would replace some damaged boards on the deck and restore and restain the rest. He went right to work powerwashing that day and came back the next day to do the deck. Everything looked great when he was done. The house was bright and clean and the deck looked brand new! I really was pleasantly surprised and believe he charged me a fair price for all the work that he did. I definitely will be calling him back to powerwash again and any other home improvement jobs I might have.

We needed an old wire fence removed and a wood fence installed. Rob was great to work with and did an excellent job. He kept me informed throughout the process and we are very happy with the result. While he was here we always had him work on our front porch which also turned out great.

I hired Mr. Byrd and his crew to do some interior painting, pressure wash house and decks, and repair rotten door frame. His initial response for a price quote and scheduling was very good and he underbid another home repair contractor and that was good. Overall Mr. Byrd and his crew did a very nice job on the interior painting on walls which were badly stained by cigarette smoke over the years. However, I should have known better than to go to work and leave a check expecting the work to be completed, but I didn't really have a choice that day. The back door frame that was repaired badly needed a second coat of paint. Also, when pressure washing the front deck floor they chipped the paint of the bottom of the deck rails. I called Mr. Byrd and told him about this. He told me that he would come back early the next week. That's been 2 weeks ago and I've not heard anything else from him. I have a realtor coming in to look at the house next week so I guess I'll have to make these corrections myself. Although these are small things, I feel he should make it right since he's been paid for the job. Mr. Byrd has come back to correct the issues that were pending. Apparently, he thought that someone in his crew had come back to do this, but they had not done so. Everything looks very good now.

I got four estimates to have our 25 year old deck renovated. Two of the estimates were eliminated rather quickly. Of the two remaining estimates, I chose Handy Helpers due to Tim's responsiveness and professionalism during the estimating process, even though his bid was about 10% greater. My confidence in his company's professionalism was rewarded throughout the project. His workers were very skilled, courteous and diligent. Tim was always very attentive to any of my concerns and quickly corrected any deficiencies. He was a pleasure to work with on all aspects of this project. I would highly recommend him to any of my friends and family and certainly use him on any future projects.

Had a hot removed from deck which left a 8x8 hole within the center of the deck. Mr Pullen and team repaired the deck. The deck now looks like it was never built around a hot tub. They were very professional and on time.

Dave helped tear down an old porch railing and then built us 8x8 columns, to our exact custom specifications. They came out beautiful! He did some repair work on our siding as well. He facilitated getting my house and shed painted using a local painter and I was very happy with the final product as well. His style may seem a bit laid back / not-hurried, but he works alone (generally) doing most jobs himself, so the work may happen slower than having a team of people crawling all over the house, but the quality was worth it. We wouldn't hesitate to use him again on our next project.

I hired Dan to install a new, permitted, 550sqft freestanding deck. Dan did an excellent job and was very easy to deal with. He showed up every day at the time he communicated, which is not typical of contractors. The project turned out to be much larger than we both anticipated, but Dan stood by the initial estimate on which we shook hands.

Exterior siding/trim boards replaced. John replaced rotting wood siding, corner boards, and window sills and a front post holding my roof up over my front porch. Work performed was excellent, he cleaned everything up perfectly. Weather was horrible, probably the worst weak of the year because it was so cold, he still did what he could when it wasn't raining or snowing. Weather caused delays, out of his control. I would definitely hire him again and would recommend him to anyone looking for home repair.

Perry didn't an excellent job with our under deck patio project! He was very responsive, through and stayed within my budget. He worked to fit us in between projects and made sure we were satisfied before he left. We will be hiring Perry for another project soon!! Thanks Perry!

Ryan is a very energetic, honest and sincere young man. He is a great builder and everything he does has to be up to coed. He was contracted to enlarge our screened in porch, when he started building he found so many flaws, he tore everything down to the floor and did not change our contract price. It has to be right, because we live in Cary and the inspectors do not overlook anything. He was here at 8 A.M., each day and worked until 7 P.M. some nights(this was in the May/June time frame). I can highly recommend Ryan for any carpentry work or additions. He would be the first person I would call if I were going to do any more work. We have recommended him to some of our neighbors who want to build an addition. He is a good builder, but a better man.

I relocated out of state and in the interim I put my house for sale. My realtor showed me some estimates without remodel. After reviewing the comparables in the area I decided to put some work into it and am I glad I did. Like many of us there was a budget to stay within. Pondered my options for a short while then I hired Alan to do some bathroom remodel, painting, deck, tile work, laminate flooring, and a variety of small jobs including electrical and plumbing work. When the projects were completed my husband tried to talk me into keeping the house because it looks so nice LOL He traveled quite a distance and did a great job. What I was equally impressed with was after his work was done he stuck through the entire inspection process for my closing. The house was only on the market for 4 days and I received full offer. Pretty impressive to me. Good listener, nice work, and just as important Alan had that old fashion work ethic. Took pride and showed up when he said he would on all occasions. I think he was just as concerned in my budget as I was even when he was purchasing supplies for me. I am definitely grateful to had found someone affordable and hard-working who actually cared and did a great job. I would definitely recommend Alan Melton.

We had our old deck removed and a new/bigger one built, as well as some rotted wood replaced with siding near the new deck installation. It was very clear from the beginning that they know what they were doing, could show and explain to us the concerns that came up, and got the job done in five days (original timeline was about 2 weeks). Now we have a gorgeous deck that we are beyond happy with. Cannot recommend highly enough!

Justin assessed our old deck and found the framing to be solid. This saved time and money. The demo of the old deck was completed quickly and without damage to our home or surrounding structures. Justin was patient with our many ideas and thoughts we worked with him in planning out the new deck. He was creative in adding details that would set our new deck apart from the typical standard decks out there (and without adding extra cost). Justin takes great pride in his work, and he made sure we were pleased each step of the way. Justin was also very tidy in cleaning up after a day's work. We are continuously receiving compliments on his masterpiece! Thank you SO much Justin!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
