Introduction: Balanced Movement – Achieving the Benefits of Vigorous Exercise Safely
Most Americans get little vigorous exercise at work or during leisure hours. But regular, more vigorous exercise provides significant health and well-being benefits that even consistent, moderate activity cannot deliver. Vigorous physical activity can be tricky though. Many of us do not know where to start while others of us have hit roadblocks in our exercise routines. Improper training often leads to imbalances that cause strain, pain, or even injury. If your body is resilient enough to absorb the negative effects of improper exercise, it still will not feel like its in its optimal state. Over time this can lead to decreased motivation. Starting and adhering to a balanced movement routine increases your chance to enjoy the many benefits that come from regular, more vigorous exercise. This month, the RDU Wellness Program is going to introduce you to a new way of physical training built on a foundation of balanced movements. This balanced movement routine can be used by all and offers benefits over and above traditional physical activity programs.
About the Presenter – Malakai Layzar-Phoenix, RYT
A highly recruited football player from Georgia, Malakai Layzar-Phoenix was ranked as one of the top 50 players in the country for his position. Recognized nationally for his speed and athleticism, his skills on the football field landed him thirteen offers from Division 1 schools like Cincinnati, Vanderbilt, East Carolina and the University of Central Florida. Ultimately, he signed with Duke University and set out on what appeared to be a promising career. Two years later, numerous injuries sidelined Malakai and surgery followed. He would never play another snap. Determined to better understand where his body failed him, Malakai set out on a fitness journey that in addition to football included weightlifting, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), speed and agility training, corrective exercises, boxing, running 10K races and yoga. Using knowledge gained from each of these disparate fields of exercise, Malakai developed a balanced movement routine that can not only help individuals achieve their exercise goals, but also improve their overall health and well-being.
