I had an emergency plumbing situation and Randy responded immediately and fixed my issue in no time. He even cleaned up the water on the floor from the overflow. He was very kind and explained why my issue had happened and what I can do in the future to fix it myself without having to pay for another visit. I will definitely call Rabdy again in the future.

Couple did great job, when I did not have all the supplies they needed they ran out and got them. Cleaned up after themselves including boxes new toilets were in. Would definitely call again for any job they could do. They are actually coming back again soon to do another plumbing job. Give them a call, you will be pleased.

Every person I dealt with from Morris Jenkins, face to face or over the phone, was very professional and courteous. They were patient and answered all my questions. I never felt pressured. They changed all my ductwork in a day and a half and even told me about a plumbing leak they spotted under the house that I never would have know about. They cleaned up behind themselves and treated me and my home with great respect. I am pleased to say that Morris Jenkins will be handing my HVAC needs.

Charles was nothing short of exceptional on this job. He was punctual (actually got to my house before I did) and then was super efficient in his work replacing the baseboard in one of the rooms in my home. The finished product looks excellent! If that wasn't enough, during our conversations found out Charles also could help with a plumbing issue I was having with one of our toilets. He probably stayed an extra 30 min at least helping try and unclog the toilet and he got that fixed as well! Even though he didn't ask for anything, I paid him extra for that work and the exceptional work he did on both projects. I certainly recommend him and I will reach out to him if I ever need help!

Gary responded to my post almost immediately, and gave me a very reasonable quote over the phone. He was able to come same day, perform the Job I asked, and was even willing to quote, run to the store for some specialty parts, and complete another unrelated job for me that I hadn't planned yet. The final work is clean, professional, and was very cost effective. I plan to use a Gary again in the near future for some more plumbing work.

I cannot say enough good things about my experience with King Plumbing and Drains. Mr. King not only charged a reasonable price but informed me that the parts that I had purchased before his visit were under a lifetime warranty. The end result is that the company is now going to send me the replacement parts which I can then return to Lowe's for a complete refund.

I came home from work to the misery of a hot house and a broken A/C unit. I reached out for help and Shelton responded immediately. I was afraid I would be forced to deal with the heat throughout the night due the issue being identified late in the day, but Shelton came out after the sun had gone down with his headlamp ready to work. He correctly identified the issue from my Thumbtack description and had it fixed in less than 10 minutes. He also identified another fault with my unit, which sure enough made itself known the very next day. I called and he came back and repaired that swiftly, as well -- all of this service delivered at a very reasonable price with a friendly, Kentucky accent. I would highly recommend Shelton for any HVAC issues.

I contacted IRV plumbing and electric and spoke to Robert because I was having problems with a clogged toilet. My nephews threw something in it. Leon and Sidney at IRV plumbing and electric came out and did an excellent job. They were knowledgeable and kept me informed the entire time. They had to replace the toilet and got me an affordable toilet. I dont have to spend hours plungering. Thank God. Wonderful job to both Leon and Sidney at IRV plumbing and electric. Thanks Robert.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
