I can't say enough great things for Dustin and his crew. They were there on time, did a wonderful job with our gutters and even helped me with a storm window that needed to be rehung. I will be recommending them to everyone and when I need a handyman for projects, he is going to be the first person I call!!!! Thank you again!

I had a "small" drywall job that I couldn't do myself. I had several contractors offer quotes after seeing the pictures that I sent them. A few guessed at what it would take to fix and an approx cost and others would not take the job because it was below their minimun pricing and not worth their time. Juan came out on a Saturday morning and physically saw the issues that I had and provided a very reasonable quote. He worked around my busy schedule to do the work for me. Juan and his worker were very professional and finished the job in half the time that we thought it would take!! I will definately keep his card and use him for additional jobs I have coming up in the near future!! Thanks Juan!!! Job VERY well done!!

I couldn't be more pleased with my experience. I hired Kenneth to build some stairs off my kitchen area as the deck was in bad shape. He was quick, always responsive and did a great job. After quotes from many contractors Kenneth was by far the most professional individual I spoke with and provided a affordable quote. I will definitely use this company for future projects.

Jeff was excellent from start to finish. When he provided the bid he definitely stood out compared to other contractors, you could really tell he knew what he was doing. The work he performed looks fantastic. He is a true professional. I will definitely recommend him to family and friends for any electrical work.

Luigi did a terrific job on our painting project. It was well done on budget and on time. You'd expect that from any professional painter. What really impressed me was his customer service. When he says he'll do something, you can rest assured he will keep his word. And he does a great job in customer communications. That's rare among contractors - at least in my experience. I would hire him again in a heartbeat and have already recommended him to someone.

Jerry fixed a pantry door that had broken hardware. It was a challenge because the door wasn't installed as it should have been by previous contractors. He made sure it worked! I'm glad to refer him to anyone!

Dan was able to see me within a couple days after first contact to install a 6-paneled interior door in the basement. The 1963 construction proved problematic at times, but Dan was able to come up with a solution. The door looks like it's always been there and really defines the living space. Very thorough, professional, cleaned up at the end of the day. Would recommend.

HAVE USED TRAVIS FOR SEVERAL PROJECTS OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. HE'S RESPONSIVE, POLITE, TIMELY AND AFFORDABLE. THE BEST THING IS NO SURPRISES. I'M REALLY PICKY ABOUT THE WORK DONE, BUT TRAVIS WAS EVEN MORE CONCERNED. EVERY DAY THE WORKSITE WAS SPOTLESS AND I WAS NEVER LEFT WONDERING WHAT WAS GOING ON OR THE TIMETABLE. IF I COULD, I'D PUT HIM ON PERMANENT RETAINER. HE'S AN EVEN BETTER GUY THAN A CONTRACTOR. IF YOU DON'T USE TRAVIS, YOU MADE A MISTAKE!

I had Bulldog Constuction do a total bathroom remodel for me and I could not have been more pleased with not just the finished product but the entire process. The project was completed on time and on budget yet he was very flexible with any changes and additions to the scope of work. Rob was on site most every day and made it seem as though this was his primary focus. Above all the work was outstanding and there have been no follow up issues. I can not recommend Bulldog Construction highly enough for any construction or remodeling needs.

We have been using United Services for the past three years and have been extremely satisfied with the service, quality of products, pricing and customer service. Our latest home improvement, the exterior of our home, was updated with James Hardy siding, 6 inch gutters, painting, roof and exterior doors. The service we received from Mark Passer and his crews was outstanding. They went above and beyond to ensure we were satisfied, made adjustments when required and ensured we were keep up-to-date as the project progressed. We have no hesitation in recommending United Services Home Improvements for all your home projects.

Everything about Millennium Construction is superior service. I have known David Dykstra since he first started this company and he's able to provide general contracting services all any project - big or small. This includes minor projects to patch damaged soffit or mount a television all the way to full kitchen/bathroom remodels. David and his team are prompt, attentive, respectful, honest, and just downright good people (and on top of all that - they do fantastic work!) If you have a construction need, contact Millennium Construction and support this business! Like most things in life, you get what you pay for. If you're like most people (including myself), you're often trying to get projects done on a tight budget. However, do not go out and find the cheapest contractor you can find that leaves you with a half finished project and a pile of disappointment. David and his team are worth what you pay for - solid team, responsive customer service, and expert craftsmanship. They will walk with you through the entire project from the very start to the very end. I HIGHLY and STRONGLY recommend this company.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
