The job was pick up and haul stuff to the dump or Goodwill. Dustin was available right away and did a great job in a short amount of time. Hiring him for some more haul away and other small jobs around the house. Worked out perfectly.

Daniel Roofing painted the exterior of our home. Kenneth was prompt getting our job scheduled before the weather got colder. The wood siding on the house didn't take the paint as expected, but he stuck with it, giving it the attention necessary until it looked as it was supposed to. The house looks great! I would hire Daniel Roofing & Construction again.

Luigi did a great job in record time. Between initial contact to final completion it was four days to do an entire floor of a house. Super responsive, easy to work with and their work was great and at a reasonable price. Highly recommend and would use him again!

Bob is all you could ask for in a handyman/contractor. He's very professional and goes out of his way to be helpful. Once hired he immediately went to work and was done in a few days instead of the week+ I thought it would take. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him and plan to hire him again.

Being a realtor, it's tough to find a reliable and knowledgeable contractor. I am so grateful to be able to turn to Matt when one of my clients needs help. When I list homes, I want them to be in the best condition to get the best price. If repair work is needed before we list a house, Matt is someone I can count on to promptly make an assessment of what's needed and fairly price the work to be completed.

Late in 2006 we purchsed a smaller house and thanks to our realator, we were introduced to Nelson and Sons. The home we purchased was in need of extensive work to make it safe, comfortable and beautified. Before we moved in, all the floors were replaced, carpeting some rooms, congolumn in kitchen and wood in the living room. This was accomplished perfectly for us and we could move in our furniture. There were also areas in the basement that needed repair - this too was done very well. The trim work on the ceilings and wainscoating are beautiful. After we moved in, we had the attached garage converted to a large dining room. It was a massive effort that he accomplished with apparent ease with his skills with woodwork, and all the necessary things to accomplish for a raised floor. After this, we needed a porch for our back door. Cement was poured, columns were added for the elongted roof of our porch. A beautiful place for morning coffee when weather/temperatures permit. We also decided we needed a garage. The 2 car garage is remarkably sturdy with an attic and very well built.. Travis worked the better part of a year for us. He was always punctual at work. His initiative, suggestions and high quality of work was appreciated by us. His special touch for a project were improvements that exceeded our expectations. During his time working here he detected several problem areas. Thanks to him our home is now safer and more comfortable. He also remodeled our bathroom and also cut a small window for this windowless bathroom, which now is very attractive for a bathroom. Another project was remodeling our kitchen - - new sink, fixtures, cubbards and dishwasher were installed. My wife was exceptionally pleased as it was remodeled exactly as she wished. Throughout it was a pleasure to have Travis working on our home. He is honest and trustworthy. We gave him a set of house keys so he could work when we were out of town a few days. A couple years after all this, we decided we needed a front porch. I showed him a photo of a portico on a Louisiana Plantation and told him we wanted one like that. He replicated the photo perfectly and now we have a very attractive portico with 2 large white columns. We have received numerous compliments on the beauty of our portico. My wife and I are tetired and this our retirement home. We now live in comfort, safety and beauty - - - and a special comfort knowing we can call on Nelson and Sons whom we can trust when we need work done or an inspection.

I had Rob replace a sliding door for me. When he took the old door out, it was obvious the original builder did not know how to make their cuts straight. Rob was able to install the door with minor adjustments and I must say...there were absolutely no air leaks this winter and the seal was perfect.

I had a house to get ready to sell. Daniel did a bunch of outdoor work, including mulch, replacing light fixtures, cleaning debris, etc. He did a good job. I will hire him again for the next job.

We had hail damage on our roof & gutters. Mark helped us handle our insurance company making our end stress free. While his crew did a fantastic job replacing the roof & gutters. They were timely & clean. I've recommended United Services to my family which they have taken care of my mom & brothers homes over the years. Will use them for my next project!

Ryan has done one major outside remodel of my house and a project inside the house as well. His attention to detail is amazing! He is incredibly talented. He brought ideas and suggestions for the look of my exterior and I couldn't be more pleased. I would not of come up with the look I wanted to achieve on my own. His work was completed in a quick manner as well and he was in constant communication with me. I look forward to working more with him and will be suggesting to my friends and family to use his talents and skills.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
