It was a pleasure working with David. We hired him for two jobs, and both of them were delivered with great quality, and precision. He is very responsive (unusual for most contractors out there) and on-time. Highly recommend David for any electrical work!

Bob has always been a amazing contractor. i was a single mother with a old house and Bob guided me and did wonderful renovations for me. He always had great advice for me. Left the work site clean and picked up and when he was done the job was beautiful. He did everything from renovating my kitchen to replacing the falling down two story plaster wall in the stairwell with sheet rock.. Bob rocks!

Just hired Steve for my retaining wall replacement project. I really cannot say enough great things about him. He was on time, always answered my calls and requests, and did a killer job. Typically contractors in this business are not that professional and will leave you hanging, but not Steve. Check out the before/after of the wall he just did, the proof is in the pictures. My wife and I could not be more satisfied. Seriously, hire him and you will not regret it.

Gerry and his brother Mike have done an excellent job at our home last week. We had to address water leaks and rusted waterlines in three toilets. Gerry communicated well about the project, estimation, parts and pricing. Gerry listened to everything I had to say about the plumbing issues in our home and gave me ideas and options to fix the issue with appropriate parts. He allowed me to buy the parts myself. On the day of the install, Gerry and his brother took extra care to do the project with best quality and spent time to make sure that there are no more water leaks in our pipes after the work. Mike installed two water hammers for the washing machine by doing some copper pipe work and tested well after the installation to ensure that the washer is working fine and there is no more sounds coming from the pipes. Mike also helped us to stabilize the washer by adjusting the leveling screws. They used necessary accessories to keep the workplace clean and after the project, left no trace of any residue. Upon my request, they wore booties to avoid walking with boots on our carpets. I greatly appreciate their professional work ethic and quality of work. I strongly recommend them for any plumbing work in your home based on what I saw. It is rare to find quality contractors. When you do find one support them. All the best and have a great day. -Satheesh Donthy, Chelmsford, MA 01824

Mike was very responsive and was deliberate to give me a fully broken down quote prior to starting the work. He accommodated my request to start the project as soon as possible. I hired Mike for a roofing repair project, and his work was very thorough and professionally done. I plan to contact Mike for future work.

Very good experience with Northeast Construction. Finally some one who was able to replicate the trim I needed done! A few other contractors tried but couldn't replicate some trim I needed for my fireplace. Brandon assured me they could do it and even told me if they couldn't do it to my satisfaction I would not have to pay. Very professional and very good work.

We had complete vinyl siding and trim done on our house in Hooksett in May 2014. Jim arrived promptly for the estimate which was thorough and the price was fair. All work was performed by Jim and his brother (no sub contractors). They did a great job. Also cleaned up the worksite after each day. The entire job took about 3 weeks. No issues with the work thus far. Very satisfied.

Jim did an amazing job on the tiles in the kitchen. The experience working with Jim is what it should be when working with a contractor. He started and ended the job on schedule even though there were issues with the existing concrete sub floor. I am extremely happy with the work.

XCC did a perfect job installing my hardwood floors in two large rooms. There were lots of complications with rooms being out of square, un-level surface around the fireplace due to mortar, and border patterns with different wood, and insets. All of it came out perfectly and with very little wood waste (way less than other contractors would have done). Xavier and his crew also did a great job replacing my damaged sub-floors throughout the entire house - a task that no other contractors were willing to take on. Xavier and his crew always worked hard and are very pleasant to be around. They have wide knowledge and skill sets and are willing and able to do anything you might need. No lazy-bones or burn-outs in this crew!

We had a storm door which was poorly installed by another contractor and was the wrong size. That contractor was unresponsive to our calls. We again contacted thumbtack and Mr. Sheehan responded that afternoon, measured the doorway, explained the problem. The next day he and his assistant installed a new Anderson door which is the correct size and fits perfectly and works as it should. However, we did think the labor charge was somewhat high.

Everything went very smooth on our full kitchen remodeling. We will surely use this contractor again on September for roof replacement.

True professionals are as good as gold! I put off remodeling my home for years because I dreaded the hassle of dealing with contractors and designers. When I finally committed to having the work done, I went through at least 8 General Contractors and designers to find the right fit. Each of these was either overly expensive, or had overbearing personalities, or sounded like used car salesmen.... Until I connected with Byron Cuhna and Co. Byron runs a family operated construction company that handles all size jobs. Byron came in and helped my wife and I work through the design of a large addition 26x24 on with a two car garage and bedrooms/bath above it, as well as another 15x15 family room on the opposite side of the house. Byron not only gave us great design ideas, he helped us add features that would be more cost effective and efficient. Byron and his son Eric were on the job from start to finish, and made the experience of living in "construction" much more bearable, and at a price affordable enough that I can still pay my children's college tuition next year. I highly recommend Byron Cuhna construction, I will update this review with final before and after pictures of my house. Carmelo

Jim responded immediately on Thumbtack. When I contacted him he returned my call the same day. He came to the job site when he said he would. By his demeanor I could tell that he was serious about the job. He took measurements and discussed the project. Within a short time Jim gave me a quote which I found reasonable for what needed to be done. Jim and his crew worked steadily and professionally until the job was completed. He made suggestions which were smart and appropriate and never balked when I suggested changes. When the project was finished I could not have been more satisfied. It is not enough to say that Jim's work was outstanding. It is superb. He is a competent and honest contractor.

My wife & I interviewed 14 general contractors for our complete home remodel project (3 new & expanded baths, new vaulted ceiling & tiled shower in master bath, new tray ceiling & barn door closet in master bed, new screened-in porch, new front porch & front door, new & expanded wall of colonial windows in living room, finished garage, siding repair). This is a big project & we wanted to make sure that we hired a GC that (1) is skilled, experienced & has a track record of high-quality work, (2) is trustworthy, ethical, communicates well, easy to work with, and, (3) charges a fair rate for his work. Ralph is a rare find and checks all of these boxes. You should always speak with as many contractors as possible in order to find the best match for your project, and, Ralph should absolutely be on that list. We are very impressed and very happy with Ralph, and, we HIGHLY recommend that you discuss your project with him before making a final decision. He's a hard-working, highly-skilled GC that does the right thing by his customers at a fair price.

I would give LMD Design and Construction more than 5 stars if I could. My husband and I recently purchased a home in Boston Metro and we wanted to have the downstairs painted before we moved in which meant that we needed someone who could meet the specific and short time frame. Lori, the owner of LMD Design and Construction, was one of several contractors who provided estimates. The job itself consisted of painting the kitchen, dining room, and living room walls, painting all the trim (around all the windows, baseboards, and doors), painting all the interior doors, installing crown molding and hanging wallpaper on one wall. Painting the trim was quite the task because their were cracks and gaps, unevenly applied brown stain, and paint from the walls that dripped onto the unprotected baseboards. They were able to expertly paint and repair all of the problematic trim. I hired LMD for several reasons and I am so very happy that I did. Lori was incredibly personable, honest, she gave me a very fair quote, and could meet the timeline without sacrificing quality. I was very impressed by her extensive knowledge, valuable advice, and a trustworthiness that was immediately palpable. She stood out not only from the other contractors, but from contractors in general. During the entire process she was available to answer my questions or give advice and always responded in a timely manner. For me, it is of the utmost importance that I can trust and truly rely on people with whom I do business - especially those who come into my home. Lori and her employees proved very trustworthy, punctual, and apt. I was actually shocked by the high quality and attention to detail - they even went beyond what was listed in the original quote when I changed my mind TWICE about which wallpaper I wanted hung. Adam, who works for Lori and did the painting and wallpaper installation, is an expert painter who can paint a stunning mural by hand or paint letters or phrases with expert precision - he is a true artist. Like Lori, who has a background in interior design, Adam also has an excellent eye for design and helped us to find the perfect, and final, wallpaper- which by the way is GORGEOUS, and he even went out of his way to meet us at a design store where the wallpaper samples were located. We plan to use LMD for several projects of different scales down the road. To be clear, LMD does do small jobs like mine, but they can and have remodeled entire houses, and built homes from foundation to completion. Based on other reviews and references, my own experiences of working with various contractors over the past 15 yrs, and most importantly my experience as a LMD client, I can say without a doubt that this company is one of a VERY FEW who possess the rare qualities of dexterity, expertise and trustworthiness that set them apart from other companies. Metaphorically speaking, you could compare LMD to a restaurant that has, for instance, 100 + menu items that vary from sushi to lasagna; are all reasonably priced, consist only of high quality ingredients, are expertly prepared never fluctuating in consistency, and promptly arrive at your table.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
