I am extremely happy with the installation of my new fence (approx 475 ft). While on job I had them also rebuild stone wall and they did an amazing job. The transition from old wall to new is unnoticeable. I love their work so much they will now do my stone wall caps and rebuild my front porch entry.

Excellent work! Steve and his team came out to fix my field stone foundation that was falling to pieces. He came up with a better solution than other masons and came in with a great price. Much appreciated!

We would recommend Mendez Irrigation without hesitation. We originally hired Juan to put in a stone patio, which required him to remove several large flowering shrubs. As requested, Juan and his men removed and bagged them in such a way that my daughter replanted them in her yard and is able to enjoy them. Then last minute we asked him if could do some landscaping around the yard. He placed a brick border in the front and side of our home, along with flowers, mulch and trimmed the shrubs. All this completed in approx. 2 days. Also we were very pleased the way he cleaned up before he left. The yard was hosed down, and swept up. Overall we are very pleased with the results and would hire him for future projects.

Jose has been landscaping our propert for several years Our lawn now is lush and healthy unlike the previous years He is creative and detailed in his work and very responsive to our requests This year Jose replaced our gravel path to our pool with a beautiful stone walkway and we are very pleased in a few months we will have winter and snow. It is very comforting to know that Jose will promptly remove snow from our driveway walk and roof as efficiently as he cares for our lawn. JBP. Framingham

This was a fairly large project. Mike and his team were there from the beginning ~ planning stage to the end. Mike's experience was helpful when it came to the types of flowers and shrubs needed for our yard. He helped us pick out walking stones for our front pathway, pebbles for around the pool, privacy bushes, flowers for the rock garden, etc, etc. We really can't say enough about how caring he was with trying to keep our vision. His quote was very reasonable and he let us know what was going on from day to day. We would highly recommend MSB Property. Would not hesitate to call Mike back for future projects.

Edwin from EAC Masonry did a great job leveling and sodding my yard. He worked with a contractor to install irrigation as well as the job was flawless. Edwin came quickly to provide a quote and answered many questions for me. He was very professional in his work and my interactions with him. He even helped me with a few extra details of the job such as removing a bush and some garden boxes. I would strongly recommend Edwin and his team for any projects that you have. I know that he is someone who I will be using again. For reference, my job was to remove existing "grass" (mostly weeds), level my yard, put new loam in, install 4-zone irrigation system, and install sod in an ~5000 sq ft yard.

Sal and crew from Andover Stone were a pleasure to work with! High marks all around in every respect. These days, it seems to be quite difficult to find a contractor that will simply do the work they've agreed to, within the time frame and budget estimate. Andover Stone did just that! Sal and his team were on-the-ball, very hard working, and got our challenging project done on time and within our budget expectations. We would recommend Andover Stone to anyone needing demolition and retaining wall work. Our new patio and back yard area have been transformed beyond our expectations. Great job! We can't thank Sal and Andover Stone enough! (2017-Nov-06)

I hired the Quality Landscaping for a small masonry job. Hilario was very responsive ( easy communication by text, online), pleasant and professional. Due to the rain in the past days, I have not yet checked the finished stone walls. All covered. For now, 4 stars for the reason but hoping to update to 5 stars once I see the finished work. Thanks!

I've been working with James @Triple J for about five years. He's done everything from masonry work repairing my foundation and chimney to yard clean-ups. The most recent work he's done for me have been major yard renovations starting with a new front walkway in brick pavers (herringbone pattern which he suggested) which was completed in the fall of 2017. During his work on this project he also removed the weeds and turn at the end of my driveway and replaced it with pea stone. This August, he stripped the crabgrass and top layer of my lawn and replaced it with sod. He cleaned up each garden bed, moved plants around for better flow, used a large stone found in my yard as a focal point in the front, mulched each bed, and finally, put up a new stockade fence we lost during the 2018 Noreaster. James is always on time for quotes and meetings, communicates often, provides ideas and solutions, and he and his crew are great to work with when they're on site. Anytime I need something done, I check with James first.

You know it's crazy that when you read reviews and all the ratings were Five Stars then you read a review that seems to me like a vindictive person. To me it's like "Wow" I didn't have any issues with JDQ. I do realize that there are some control freaks out there that once you finally put a stop to all the belittling and complaining they have to some way shape or form try to destroy a good hard worker reputation. When I was calling around for a professional handyman and builder I was so out of my realm. I spoke with many different businesses, most left me feeling like I didn't know what I was talking about and crazy for some projects I wanted complete. I even had them come to my home and what a mistake that was. Stone-age coming back in full force! I was at my dentist and there was a JDQ business card, first thing I saw that made me comfortable was that Mr. Quintal is a veteran, then I called him and what a pleasure! Of course after the last companies I spoke to I was gun shy to ask for what I want completed. Mr. Quintal suggested that he should come to my home and have me walk him through all the projects I would like to have completed. When he pulled in my driveway, about 15 minutes early, he had A tape measure, pencils and crazy builder paper. He walked me through all the steps that he would have to do to complete my projects, never leaving anything out. He didn't make me feel like I was a moron and he was very respectful. When we walk through some of the steps for the project the suggestions that he had were brilliant! I would have never of thought of it, and deftly didn't see it on Pinterest. I felt so comfortable with JDQ that once we agreed on which product to start first I let Mr. Quintal have a free-for-all to add any ideas that he seemed to fit. Before any adjustments were needed he would run it by me first and try to find the best bargain for the supplies. He is definitely the best woodworker/builder besides my father and that setting the bar pretty high! So thank you Mr. Quintal for fitting me in while you were working with that crazy lady, your full calendar and making my project dreams come true and even better that I first imagined. Now when I have company over to my house I get so many compliments on the work completed it makes me gitty and want more completed. I genuinely feel that JDQ is worth every cent I paid him. Everybody out there before you call anybody else call Mr. Quintal and I can guarantee you will not be disappointed. So thank you JDQ for all your hard work and sweat poured into my home. Your forever future customer sincerely, PIC! Happy Veteran's Day!

We had them excavate trees and brush near the lawn and they did a great job. We had them make a stone moat for drainage and they also did a great job. Only problem was that we were not told the day they were coming and the workers were different from the owner who we explained the project to . They pruned and weeded and we were less satisfied with that aspect. We would hire them again and their prices were fair.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
