I hired Obed Matul of GMP Landscaping to install my patio -- about 17 feet by 30 feet. Obed is the owner. He has a crew of about two to three people. His pricing is generally comparable to others -- perhaps just a bit lower than others. His crew is very dedicated and hard working. To be successful with Obed, make sure you have him signed the contract and label your tools so there is no mix up at the end of the project. Even though I had a design plan and had Obed signed it, he still wanted to change contract in a middle of project. But generally speaking, I'm pleased with Obed and his crew. At end of project we gave his crew extra tips as we feel they deserved it for hard work.

I cannot say enough about what a pleasure it was to work with Anibal and his exceptional crew. He exceeded every expectation that I had in terms of quality, increasing the size of his crew to finish earlier than he originally quoted, not nickel dimming me when it came to small changes that were made, and perhaps most valuable, demonstrating a keen sense of design to match His craft. It is rare these days to find trades people who care as much as Anibal does when it comes to satisfying his customer. I look forward to working with Anibal on future landscaping projects. A joy to work with

Kevin Norton Landscape and Construction recently graded, filled and sodded an area of our backyard where an above ground pool used to be - and we couldn't be happier with his work! Throughout the project, Kevin was professional, responsive, and flexible to our needs. He was able to speak expertly about the project costs and options, and his work was of superior quality. We will certainly be contacting him for future projects and would recommend his services to anyone!

Juan did an amazing job with the installation of my sprinkler system. He went above and beyond for me, especially getting the job completed during Memorial Day weekend. I have hired many contractors before and he is one of the best I have hired. Highly highly recommend.

My husband and I have used Magnolia on many occasions for walkways, new gardens and planting’s and have always been pleased. Most recently we built a home and Magnolia Site Works, landscape and hard scape designed the entire property. The work was complex and required a lot of coordination with other subcontractors and management of conservation rules and regulations. The end result was more than we imagined and beyond expectations. Brent is very talented, always professional and his team is the same. Magnolia Site Works is at the top of our list for landscaping, patio and walkway needs!

I had a last minute cancellation for my patio install and had a party planned for 2 days out. Romero's Landscaping came that afternoon and finished the job that day. The patio looks amazing and the price was very reasonable. I would recommend to everyone!!!

Edwin from EAC Masonry did a great job leveling and sodding my yard. He worked with a contractor to install irrigation as well as the job was flawless. Edwin came quickly to provide a quote and answered many questions for me. He was very professional in his work and my interactions with him. He even helped me with a few extra details of the job such as removing a bush and some garden boxes. I would strongly recommend Edwin and his team for any projects that you have. I know that he is someone who I will be using again. For reference, my job was to remove existing "grass" (mostly weeds), level my yard, put new loam in, install 4-zone irrigation system, and install sod in an ~5000 sq ft yard.

From the get go Randy was the right choice. Listening to what we wanted to accomplish and how we'd like it to look, he offered his advice (which I'm glad we took, we expended our new flower bed out a couple feet more than expected), but didn't push us in any way. He answered all questions, e-mails, texts within minutes, even after hours. We had multiple quotes for the same job, however Randy's professionalism, price and eagerness to get the job done right won him the bid. We had a two raised beds put in (25' x 5', 25' x 2.5'). and had new sod put in on our entire front lawn. The project came out 10x better than we pictured and we're already looking for the next project since this one came out so good. Thanks a ton Randy!

Edgar and his team did a great job doing a complete clean up and landscaping of our multi- tiered lot. The work included edging, weeding, trimming of bushes, planting of a small tree and mowing. He will also be installing sod later this week. We are very happy with the work. Pleasant, complete and on time. Michele & Scott in Winchester

From the time we decided to move forward with KD, our supplies for our fence were ordered the next day, and installation was started and almost completed the day after. Even the owner was out in the cold, rain with his fellow colleagues putting up our fence. Greg was fantastic and very kind. He came out the very day I reached out to him and he took the measurements we needed. They worked within our budget and were upfront with us every step of the way. We will definitely be using them for our decking and landscaping needs in the spring.

Mike is excellent and is very particular about his work. I had originally contacted him to plant some trees and plants for me. After his punctuality and very reasonable prices I also had a walkway and patio installed by Mike. They are beautiful! He definitely cares about the his quality of his work. And, I recently moved into a new house and the fill they put in for my lawn was trash. Rocks, tar, glass, bottle caps and cement. Needless to say a lawn is not what I have. He is also installing a new lawn and irrigation for me. He is excellent, reliable (hard to find these days) and very reasonable in his pricing. Mike is a very hard worker. I do not plan on losing his business card. He is definitely someone I will continue to use for future projects. I am thrilled that I found him. It is very rare these days that you can find someone as reliable and who cares about his work as much as Mike.

I chose the best company for my landscaping services. I couldn't have asked for a better professional and respectful team to work on my house! The front of my house looked like a jungle since it was taken over by weeds and overgrown bushes. We were also in desperate need of some type of fencing since we needed privacy and wanted to keep neighbor's animals out from doing their business on our front lawn. Taking on the landscape was out of our comfort zone so my boyfriend and I finally made the decision to shop around for landscaping quotes. As a first time homeowner, I am very skeptical and cautious about hiring any company to do any work on my house. While shopping around, we came to realize that certain landscaping companies only perform work they are best at and most didn't even include installing fences. Some showed their discomfort in our request, which made us very uncomfortable to hire them because we wanted the best results for the money we were going to spend. After searching around once more, I stumbled upon Done Right Landscaping. I've seen their signs on work they have done around the area, so I just did a little more research before wasting my time again. Come to find out, they do everything! Fencing, asphalt, landscaping, pavers, and even tree service! Even though they offered it all, I hoped that the outcome was as good as the companies that concentrated on what they were great at. Bruce, who I found out later was the owner of the company, came by the house as soon as he was available. Once we told him about the work that we needed, he was very helpful about all the good or bad decisions that we were making. Even though other landscaping companies suggested other work to make it easier for them, Bruce suggested work that would make our house beautiful and we felt very comfortable with how above and beyond he wanted to go for us. We agreed on pavers, fencing, pruning of this terrible tree that ruined our cars, and low maintenance plants that is great for busy workers like my boyfriend and I. It sounded so good so we just had to do it! Now just to be clear, they were definitely pricey, but a price definitely worth paying. They finished in three days! Everything was as perfect as he described it and now I am falling in love with my house all over again! I would find any excuse to go outside just to walk on those pavers. The comfort of reassurance from Bruce and his team with the outcome of the job made the experience absolutely worth it. I am in complete bliss and would recommend them to everyone. You will not be disappointed! Thanks again to guys for their awesome job!!

I had a 18ft.x22ft. patio installed in my backyard along with an extended walkway to the house. It was essential for my family to have this so we could spend time/eat meals together outside. Although, it took 2 days longer than anticipated, my family and I are very pleased with the work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
