I had a strange issue with my furnace, and was afraid I'd have to get a new one. I read through many reviews, and picked Currier North because they really seemed to care on a personal level about their customers. I spoke with Mark, he came out promptly, right on time. Mark was professional, courteous and knew what he was talking about. It turns out, I didn't need a new furnace. Mark gave me a recommendation, which I followed and the issue hasn't happened since. He also followed up with me a few days later to see if the problem had occurred again. I was blown away by the level of customer service, and you will be too. I can't recommend Currier North enough. Honest, hardworking, trustworthy and professional, these folks are really great; they will help you solve your problem!

I needed a routine service on my furnace to complete a home sale. The day of the initial appointment they didn't arrive within the two hour window. I placed a call and was told the previous job was much bigger than expected and they were running late. After another hour I had to call again only to be told it would require rescheduling. I didn't mind that sometimes jobs are bigger than they originally appear, but I didn't appreciate having to be the one making contact twice. Having said that, when the next opportunity came, they were within their time frame, did a great job, and were very personable. Overall I was happy with the experience.

My husband tried to changed the batteries in our thermostat and managed to blow our fuse. so i went on thumbtack, and made a post and got a few quotes. the first technician came out the next morning for 50 dollar service fee, and told me i needed to spend around 1000.00 dollars that the board was bad on the furnace. so i talked to my husband and he said to call someone else from our quotes list and get another opinion because he thought it sounded fishy. So i contacted modern air and they were able to get someone to us that same day. When their technician arrived to the house and he went to check the furnace and see what was going, with in a few minutes he brought us a burnt fuse and had our furnace running pretty quickly for just the service call fee because our fuse was inexpensive and he had it on hand with him. He even stuck around for a few minutes to watch it run and explained to my husband how change the filter and put the doors on properly as well as changed the batteries with-out creating a problem. They provide a great service and we were very happy we didn't need to waste money on parts we didn't need. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

We woke up to 2 degrees Fahrenheit and NO HEAT! We tried reaching our regular gas furnace maintenance contractor and several other local contractors without any luck. When we found Tim through Thumbtack we were so grateful. He quickly assessed our issue over the phone, purchased the part and got to our house that same day. Thank goodness! Not only is a he a professional but very personable too. We plan to contract Tim again to install a humidifying system. Thanks Tim!

Mike was able to come same-day, which I really needed. He explained what he was doing and discussed possible reasons for the problem. We have a 20 year-old furnace, and other furnace/air conditioning people would have dismissed repairs and gone straight for the "you need a new furnace" line. But Mike was willing to work with what we had. I felt very comfortable having him in my home. When we do need to replace the furnace (which may be sooner than later), we will be going with Mike!

Valentin did an amazing job installing the a/c and central heating for my house. He went above and beyond to make sure that the cost stayed low and his attention to detail was phenomenal. He was punctual and made sure that I knew what to expect. On top of that, he made sure that my personal items/furniture were covered if they might be near/close to where he was working and cleaned up after he was done! Would definitely hire him again and recommend him to all my friends!

Andy was early, extremely professional, and a delight to have service the furnace. Hadn't had it cleaned since I moved in over two years ago (!!) so it was pretty gross...looked brand new by the time he was finished--he ended up replacing a bit I can't recall the name of that lights the pilot because it was pretty corroded, and was clear I could probably get away with waiting if I hadn't been ready to incur a little more expense (was really minor though so I said go for it). His rates were really reasonable compared to other quotes I got. We also had a great chat about my unfinished basement's potential since he's done carpentry work too and I'm having him back with some colleagues to draw up plans and give me a quote in the next couple weeks. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend Andy for his great service and communication to others...thanks for getting us ready for winter!

HHI did repair work on a frozen pipe. I called after 8 pm and Jay was at our home within an hour. The pipe was replaced, additional insulation installed and the work area cleaned up. We couldn't have asked for better service. I will definitely call HHI for future work.

I feel fortunate to have been referred to Advanced Plumbing when my water tank burst. Keith is everything you want in a plumber but never expect to get. Professional, skilled, timely, and priced fairly. Aside from saving my butt in emergencies, I hired Keith to install a natural gas heater in my garage. Five stars. Call them and see for yourself.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

    • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
    • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
    • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
    • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
    • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
    • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
    • Cleaning and oiling the blower
    • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
    • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
    • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

    • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
      • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
    • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
    • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
    • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
