J Duenas Professional Photography

Mr. Duenas takes his photography very serious. He has a wonderful eye, and knows what it takes to take pictures for young children (he did the best job with my, at the time, 7 month old). He is also very understanding for what the customer needs (As we needed breaks for feeding) and even saw the beauty and opportunity to capture a beautiful day to day task. He operates in a very timely manner, with taking the pictures, giving beautiful sneak peaks, as well as providing the finished product. I give him a 10/10, and I would (and will) take my family to this wonderful photographer for our future pictures. I highly recommend his artistic eye for your future pictures!

Liesl Clark Photography

We needed a photographer to do our wedding ceremony, and came to thumbtack, based on reviews we chose Liesl, it was an amazing choice. Liesl was not only professional, above and beyond accommodating, but when someone is passionate about what they do it is evident and she is a pro! Our photos are more than we had hoped for and if you are choosing between photographers, a choice of Liesl is not only a great one, but one you will be excited and happy about for years to come.

The DJ's Mic

We hired The DJ's Mic, for a 40th birthday. Decided to go with the full package deal. Lights, sound, a photographer, and Photobooth. This was our first photobooth experience, and I must say the kids had loads if fun. The music was a nice blend of anything that you would typically find on the radio, with some older stuff thrown in for old timers like myself. I do want to apologize to "Mike" our DJ. The kids would not leave him alone. However he was very patient with them and played all of there songs. Over all I would recommend. We paid $2400 for a DJ, Photography, A photobooth, and the DJ. A great price!

Jim Barbere Photography

I had just had our baby girl when I reached out to Jim to have him do her newborn photos, as well as update our family photos to include our newest addition. It was December and as busy as everyone was with the holidays, Jim responded quickly to my inquiry and up until our session with the utmost attention. His assessment of what I saw as my vision was thorough and on point in his delivery. He arrived on time, and most importantly did not rush the session. I have three year old twins (and a dog) and he was extremely patient with them, and worked with their attention spans well. My husband and I are impressed and cannot say enough about the quality of the photos. I also love the idea of paying for the digital images and being able to do what I want with them, and he didn't pressure us to buy frames and print packages like the chain photography stores we have been to in the past. Jim is a true artist and a pleasure to work with! We have found our family photographer for here on out, and are already planning to have him photograph the Christening.

Essence Photography

Pablo is a great photographer! He was on time, very professional, was able to corral a "large family" for portraits and he made it fun for all of us, from age 2 to age 60 something :-) I will recommend him to anyone who is looking for a photographer and look forward to having him photograph us again :-) Outstanding!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

  • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
  • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
  • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
  • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
  • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
  • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
  • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
  • Opt for tonally similar colors.
  • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.
