Valerie was an amazing photographer/woman. She was so helpful at the beginning before we even booked her - she explained what she felt was a great timeline for the day of and put me at ease. I went with a list of questions, and she addressed every question except for 1 before I even had a chance to ask them. She required a reasonable down payment and allows you to break up the rest of the bill into payments if you would. Because her pricing was so great I opted to just give her Cash on the day of the service. Afterward the contract was signed she left me alone. Which was the best thing ever. She always responded timely if I had any questions. She was a great support to have - without needing to dictate what she wanted. She definitely provided me the guidence I needed. The day of she was on time and ready to work. My family can be hard sometimes - she smiled and was extremely professional. She was exactly what I needed to keep the wedding party in line and on schedule. If she was not assertive we would still be taking pictures today a month and a half later. She was in great communication with our DJ the day of to help coordinate all the event timelines so she was ready to snap pictures of everything. The wedding was on a Saturday in August which is an extremely busy time for photographers and she had all the pictures ready to view online the Wednesday following the wedding. She made a beautiful slideshow and sent the link right away. It was easy to share with everyone and anyone can order prints right from there. We have not ordered any prints yet - we can not decide which ones we want to get because there are so many phenomenal ones. Her packages are at a great value and for a reasonable amount more she gives an edited disc of all the pictures. When we have any events in the future we will definitely call Valerie first! I really can not describe how happy we are with all the process and service provided.

We hired The DJ's Mic, for a 40th birthday. Decided to go with the full package deal. Lights, sound, a photographer, and Photobooth. This was our first photobooth experience, and I must say the kids had loads if fun. The music was a nice blend of anything that you would typically find on the radio, with some older stuff thrown in for old timers like myself. I do want to apologize to "Mike" our DJ. The kids would not leave him alone. However he was very patient with them and played all of there songs. Over all I would recommend. We paid $2400 for a DJ, Photography, A photobooth, and the DJ. A great price!

I had just had our baby girl when I reached out to Jim to have him do her newborn photos, as well as update our family photos to include our newest addition. It was December and as busy as everyone was with the holidays, Jim responded quickly to my inquiry and up until our session with the utmost attention. His assessment of what I saw as my vision was thorough and on point in his delivery. He arrived on time, and most importantly did not rush the session. I have three year old twins (and a dog) and he was extremely patient with them, and worked with their attention spans well. My husband and I are impressed and cannot say enough about the quality of the photos. I also love the idea of paying for the digital images and being able to do what I want with them, and he didn't pressure us to buy frames and print packages like the chain photography stores we have been to in the past. Jim is a true artist and a pleasure to work with! We have found our family photographer for here on out, and are already planning to have him photograph the Christening.

Tony was great to work with! We had a small wedding with close friends and family at Boston City Hall, followed by a luncheon after. He helped plan things out in advance, showed up early, had great ideas for photos, and was low-key and relaxing to shoot with. He was also very respectful of us wanting privacy because of an unusual situation, and agreed not to include us in online portfolios. We considered several photographers, and are really glad we went with Tony. I'd definitely recommend him, and we'd certainly work with him again if we have occasion to. Thanks!

Jen photographed our wedding. She was responsive and professional. Her photographs were lovely and captured many spectacular organized photos but also amazing candid shots...the kind you always want to get! She warmly fit right into the background of our gathering and was very pleasant to deal with on a personal level. I would highly recommend Jen for anyone looking to hire a photographer for a wedding!

We love Tanya! She has done several portraits for us including family, individual kids, and special events. We have many more lined up with her including maternity, birth photography, and another special event. Tanya listens to what I'm looking for and captures everything I ask for. She is also very patient as we are a very large family and need lots of breaks. So glad to have her as our family's photographer from here on out to capture those special moments I our lives.

Trevor and his assistant arrived early to checkout our wedding reception venue and they took some beautiful pictures before the guests started arriving. They took a lot of nice, candid photos, which was what I had wanted!! His pictures of my husband and I in the garden are very nice and we enjoyed the photo session. I wished I had remembered to ask Trevor for some family photos... I completely forgot to ask for them in the commotion of the reception and entertaining the guests. Just a few pictures of us with our family and perhaps another group photo with all the guests would have made it even more complete!

I was in search of high quality headshots for upcoming media and public relations activities for my work. I was so happy to find Rum Doodle and John. Appointment setup was a breeze -- John was fast and accommodating. During our meeting, John quickly asked questions to understand my needs and got right to work. The results were exactly what I needed. Options were provided within 24 hours. John was so great to work with and such a talented photographer (displays of his work are beautiful) that I will consider Rum Doodle for any of my photography needs -- family portraits or business events.

David has been our official sports photographer for over five years and his work is fantastic. His photos are always of the best quality and he is constantly looking for ways to offer the best shots from different angles or in ways we haven't done in the past. His prices are very reasonable and he has shown the ability to be flexible during our busy athletic seasons. We look forward to a long and continued partnership with fotografixstudio.com!

Stephanie is a fun and very professional photographer; she took the photos for mine and my fiancés engagement shoot. I've never had such a great experience in a shoot! :) She didn't put us in any corny or overdone poses and was very open to us just doing our own thing. Because of this, the shots came out beautiful and were so genuine. I highly recommend her for her skills as well as her personality. Her presence instantly melted away any feelings of nervousness, which also helped for a pleasant experience. :)

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you tip a photographer for family photos?

Tipping a photographer for family portraits is not standard etiquette. A great way to recognize a family photographer who goes above and beyond is to write them a glowing review. You probably found your photographer by reading online reviews, so paying it forward by letting everyone know how much you appreciate their work is a great gift. Write your review after they have delivered the final edited photos on time and you’ve confirmed that you’re happy with the terrific portraits they took.

What should you wear for a family photo?

A family photographer captures your family in a series of professionally edited portraits. You can be goofy, you can be formal, you can be exactly how you want to be. To that end, you can wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident — feeling good translates to looking good in photos. However, top family photographers do have some style suggestions that will make your family photos more visually cohesive:

  • Ask the photographer for color suggestions if you’re doing an outdoor photo shoot. Location and time of day can affect which shades will fade in the sunlight and what will stand out in a good way.
  • Stay away from a mix of stripes or plaids on multiple people — the effect is too busy.
  • Steer clear of tiny patterns, which blend together too much.
  • Avoid wearing matching outfits.
  • Do wear outfits that are complementary in color.
  • Choose color over black-and-white outfits.
  • Do choose a theme, such as pastels, fall colors or summer colors.
  • Opt for tonally similar colors.
  • Go easy on makeup for outdoor photo shoots.

How much do photographers charge for family portraits?

Family portraits are a great way to mark the passage of time, create lifelong keepsakes and have gorgeous-looking photos for your annual holiday card. The national average cost for hiring family photographers ranges from $150 to $200. Pricing can range higher depending on where you live, length of the photo shoot, the number of edited photos you request, and the background and reputation of your family photographer. Before hiring, make sure you understand their fees up front. Ask how many finished images are included in the quoted price and whether you will receive all the photos taken (not just edited photos). Ask whether you’ll be able to download digital photos or if you’ll have to print them or purchase digital copies through the photographer. Here are some average examples of family photographer pricing:

  • $175 for a one-hour studio session in Kansas.
  • $200 for a one-hour studio or outdoor session in Georgia. Includes two outfit changes, access to an online gallery, and about 200 high-resolution, edited digital photo files on a DVD, with permission to print.
  • $400 for a one-hour outdoor session in Southern California. Includes 25-30 fully edited photos accessible online or via CD/DVD.
  • $425 or more for a one-hour outdoor or in-home session in Illinois. Includes more than 50 professionally edited images, online access and print release.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
