Jerome was fantastic! He finished assembly of a 6 drawer Hemnes dresser from Ikea in just 2 hours! He was also super accommodating and measured windows for my new apartment so I could purchase blinds. The dresser looks terrific and I plan to request his expertise for future products.

Kathy was responsive to my call and scheduled a visit by the plumber (Sam) the next day (Saturday). Sam arrived on time and within few minutes identified the sources to the leaks from the bathtub drain area. Both the drain valve and the faucet valve were leaking. Sam fixed the drain valve on that day and came back two days later on Monday with the parts needed to replace the leaky faucet valve as well as a new faucet set that I wanted him to install. There were two options to replace the faucet valve - one from the front (bathtub) side which requires removing a few tiles, or from behind, which requires cutting a small area on the drywall in the adjacent room. Although it would have been easier for him to work from the front side, he decided to work from behind so that I don't have to hire another contractor to install the tiles later. I truly appreciated his thoughtfulness. He also suggested that I install access panels where the cut was made on the wall as well as on the ceiling at the first floor, below the bathtub drain valve. Sam did an excellent job and he was on time as promised. The price was very reasonable. Sam is honest and trustworthy. I will certainly hire him whenever I need work that Sam does.

Kurt did an excellent job with my bedroom wallpaper installation! He took great care and detail in aligning the pattern so that it was seamless and it'd not be possible to detect where the pieces overlapped. He was also kind in helping move the furniture so he could access the work space. It turned out beautiful!

Hired Payless Gutters for a cleaning. During the course of the job, Todd, the owner, pointed out that water was not draining from 2 of the gutters. He suggested replacing the faulty gutters and quoted a fair price. He and his crew showed up early on the day of the replacement work and completed the job and took away the old gutters. The work was done quickly and professionally. I would not hesitate to use Payless again or recommend them.

David responded immediately which was great and provided me a quote. While it appeared high, I was willing to pay for it to have the problem fixed immediately. He then called me in the morning to see if I could send him a picture of the leak. He was extremely courteous, very professional and responsive. He fixed the leak (though no replacement part was needed like he originally thought but I still paid him the originally agreeed amount). Would give 5 stars if in another 2-3 weeks there is no sign of leak and the issue is permanently fixed, but hard to say at this point since only been a day.

He maintains high standards and is very understanding, always working with a customer to make changes and achieve the desired result. Couldn't give a higher recommendation, have already and will continue to refer friends and family to him.

I initially contacted Torino Home Repair, LLC through Thumbtack in the course of a search for someone to handle a window repair. As it turned out, when Mr. Luca Morello ( a native Northern Italian ) and his wife, Mrs. Angela Morello ( who ensures that communication is perfect ) arrived, we decided that the window job be put on hold awaiting the return of a tenant away on business. I found the Morellos so knowledgeable and easy to deal with however that I asked if Luca would consider another job I needed done --- hanging a number of heavy, fragile mirrors. Luca is a man of many skills and he agreed to look at the mirror job. Once he had assessed the job, he took preparatory measurements and gave me an estimate. I had to reschedule the work date, twice. The Morellos were absolutely gracious and patient about rearranging the time. On the day of the job, Mr. Morello arrived punctually, completely equipped and having obtained in advance all the materials necessary to accomplish the job, and having thought out in advance how best to approach it. He set to work immediately and worked, carefully, tirelessly, skillfully and intelligently until the job was finished, perfectly. No coffee breaks, no complaints, no cell phone talking or texting, no excuses, no short-cuts, no requests for additional pay, no distractions and no attempts to parlay the job into additional work. And no broken mirrors. He also provided solid advice when I asked his opinion regarding placement and positioning of the mirrors. The Morellos are delightful, honest and fair. Luca Morello's work is excellent. I highly recommend Torino Home Repair, and I look forward to future encounters with the Morellos.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
