I hired Simply Moving for a short out of state move. They arrived on time and were very professional and quick. They also worked with me through several scheduling changes due to management company restrictions and promptly completed required insurance information. Highly recommend.

I emailed All Around Trucking for a price quote and immediately received a phone call to describe everything we were planning to move and received a quote right then and there. We hired them to move all of our larger furniture including our very special baby grand piano that we were very concerned about moving across the state. Carlos and Thomas took great care in packing everything up including all the crystal and our China cabinets as well as the piano and all survived the long trip successfully. They were extremely courteous and efficient as they worked. They were even very helpful in helping us decide were to place our furniture and piano in the new house since my wife and I had different ideas. We highly recommend All Around Trucking for your moving needs for both quality and value.

I can be the most challenging customer, especially when I deal with a new company and when some matter is important. Moving a law office is important and not something done too often. Seka movers were fantastic! I must have bothered them a million times with a variety of issues, including COL, vendor forms, how to handle moving many file cabinets, etc. The estimate was accurate. The guys were always upbeat. They were patient: they humored me as I tried to organize one office area after the next. They moved very heavy desk and office equipment, etc. Bottom line: we highly recommend them!

My experience working with Reginald was a good one. He is extremely professional and is pleasant to work with. He and his men arrived on time, took good care packing my moms belongings on the truck, and moved them to her, in another state, and did the same professional service all over again. She was also pleased with Reginald's service.

If I could, I'd give 10 stars!! Such a great experience using Fair Price Movers! David was very helpful in helping arrange the whole move, and this being my first move into NYC from NJ, he helped ease all the stress! Eric, Ashton, and Aaron were outstanding; quick, careful, friendly, and so helpful (and it didn't hurt that Eric was wearing a NYRangers tshirt... LGR!!) I ended up having a couple additional items on the truck that I intended to move in myself, but the guys jumped at the opportunity to help me out and bring them up themselves. I highly recommend Fair Price Movers to anyone moving within the city or from out of state. I will definitely be using them again for my next move. Thanks guys!

I've done a number of in-state and out-of-state moves over the years and this is the first time that movers have showed up on time! Not only was Kadeem professional, friendly, and courteous, but he communicated with us throughout the process in order to give us an accurate quote and ensure that things ran smoothly on moving day. He and his associate hauled all of our furniture and belongings up 2 flights of steep, narrow stairs in the exact amount of time that was estimated. This was the easiest move experience either my husband or I have had. We'll be recommending his company to everyone we know.

Bertie and his guys were able to do what I couldn't and really saved the day. The elevator in my building has been in the state of repair for over 2 months and after being told it was going to be up and working this week, I went ahead and ordered a new couch and tv stand that I've been waiting to order. Long story short, furniture arrived, elevator still not working, and I live on the 5th floor. Bertie responded to my cry for help very promptly with a reasonable quote and was able to help me same day. He and his team carried all the heavy stuff up 5 flights and took my old stuff down to the trash as well. I write this from my new couch very happy that Bertie was here to help me. I definitely recommend!

Finding Jeff and Raul was the best Christmas surprise/miracle I could have hoped for! These guys were SO careful--probably even more careful than me--moving my stuff: packing it and being careful not to scratch my hardwood floors. They took their time to do things right but didn't waste any time, either. They are clean, efficient, appropriately friendly and I will definitely use them again when I need help moving anything. They had moving blankets, helped me pack a few things. I really can't imagine better movers. They were great with working with my schedule and didn't give me a bad time when I only needed them to move a few things (which turned out to be a lot more things than I thought I had!). Their rate was excellent.

i used for a last-minute small local move requiring 2 hours. very satisfied with this company - they squeezed me in at the end of the month (peak time) when i called the day before, and quoted me a fair flat rate. i had two young guys, chris and rashim, who were on-time, efficient, friendly, professional, great attitude. no hidden charges or bad surprises. would totally hire again for a small local move.

Excellent company with people with excellent work ethic. We hired them for a long distance move. The movers were very professional and helped us reduce the stress of moving. Our new place had hardwood floors and when we told them about it, they brought rubber protectors and blankets to protect the floors. They keep everything clean and neat. They made it all easy for us. Really appreciate it.

I cannot give these guys high enough marks. I hired them through Thumbtack for a local move in central Pennsylvania. They gave me a 30 minute window during which they would arrive, and they showed up right at the first minute of the window, which I appreciated. They had a team of 3 who came and loaded everything up and unloaded things later in a very efficient, but careful manner. They gave an estimate prior as to the expectations on time and they met it and were actually a bit quicker. Periodically, they would note issues with my existing furniture. This was good, because it showed that they take pride in getting everything moved without harm. Every last object in my house arrived intact at the conclusion of the move without a scratch, or a dent. The job came in slightly under the estimate for both time and cost. I would definitely use 1st Moving Corp again. I cannot think of a single area they could improve upon.

Roadway was fantastic - from the person answering the phone, to the agent who came to review what was needed, to the move itself - everyone was pleasant, professional, and very helpful. The move was quick and they cleaned up, and everything arrived undamaged. This move was across a state border, and was a 3 bedroom apartment in a high rise, the contents split between 2 homes and storage room. They were great!

After a week long of trying to move this piece myself, failures trying to find an affordable moving company for ONE piece , being scammed, Mack came to the rescue the day before!!!! He came highly recommended from a friend who recently used his services. We just finished the job and I couldn’t be more pleased. I had one beautiful piece from Anthropologie that could not be taken apart so it needed special care and manuvering to move. Mack arrived at the pick up home earlier than scheduled and ready to work! He had a 16ft truck with a lift gate which made this even better. Him and his partner carefullymoved the extremely heavy piece to my mothers home on Long Island from westchester. I would highly recommend Mack and his team and I look forward to using them again!! Thank you guys!!!

Jon could not have been more helpful. I had to have all the work done while I was not in town. He did everything from picking out the stain color and sending me pictures of it sampled on my deck to moving my furniture back and forth from the decks. My neighbors checked on the job and told me how neat and professional the job had been done. Would definitely recommend him.

Beat money I've spent in awhile as I was able to work about everything but the actual move thanks to them. Highly highly highly recommend these guys!!

Although they were late getting to our place, we had 4 moving men who were very fast and efficient. We were out of the old apartment, which had stairs (2nd floor) and in the new, which had an elevator (2nd floor), in 7.5 hours. I definitely recommend them. The final price was $400 more than quoted which was for additional supplies they had to use. Not bad considering our last move was $1000 more than what the moving company quoted.

Relocation whether it's from one apartment to another or one state to another is not easy..however when you have a professional staff walk you through the process answer your questions and treat your furniture like it was their own is priceless. The quality of service that Mr. Luke and his team gave my mom after residing in the same apartment for 24 years was highly appreciated. Mr Luke completed the walk thru, identified small barriers with resolutions such as huge furniture and narrow hallways/doorways along with how to box certain items. Mom had a all glass cabinet and Mr. Luke and his team wrapped that cabinet in both box and heavy fabric for safe transport. Upon arrival to moms new destination all items including the glass cabinet were unloaded without a scratch. I highly recommend Mr. Luke and his team for any job you may have. Satisfaction Guaranteed

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
