First of all as a military veteran, it was a no brainer to try Warstone Investigations. I had so many bad investigators use unethical tactics to milk me and not get the job done. I went on Thumbtack and said "let me try one more time". I was hesitant and first but when Roger assured me he was a fellow soldier, I relaxed. He did the job in 2 days for not even 1/3 of what I paid to all those other scammers. This was a child custody matter and time was of the essence. He was upfront about the fees, not for once did he take advantage of my stressful situation. He told me it would be done, that's exactly what he did. I will refer this company to everyone I know. A good private investigator is rare to find. Thanks for restoring my faith in the industry. Now I'm thinking about getting my license!

I contacted Tri-State Detective Agency because I suspected my husband of 15 years was cheating on me. The Owner, Mr. Nixon himself, reached out to me to learn more about my suspicions. This was my first time contacting a Private Investigator, and I can tell that Mr. Nixon picked up on that, as he was extremely patient in explaining the various options available to me. He didn't try to rush me off of the phone, make me feel like I was just another caller or sell me services that I didn't really need. He genuinely cared about what I had to say and was sympathetic to my plight. After we agreed upon a course of action, Tri-State Detective Agency sprung into action and began an investigation into my husband's extracurricular activities. They kept me updated with detailed reports all during the process. Sadly, my suspicions were spot on and it was discovered that my husband was indeed cheating on me. I am happy to report that I have now filed for divorce and I am looking forward to a much happier future. That would not have been possible without the assistance of Tri-State Detective Agency and their discreet and professional investigation procedures. I highly recommend them for all of your investigational needs!

I needed to investigate a private matter on a rush notice. I called New Jersey Investigation, on a Friday and by Monday morning I had all the information I needed including video and still photos and more. The report was very detailed, informative and definitely more than I expected. The price was very reasonable and actually lower than 2 other quotes obtained. Very highly recommended if you need something investigated fast. No nonsense, Quick and to the point, you can't go wrong with this agency.

I have been looking for my half-brother for over 30 years, Know It All tracked him down in less than 2 weeks. He didn't even know he had a half-sister (me) and I can't thank the investigators at Know It All enough. They have fulfilled a life long mission of finding the brother I have never known. My family is complete now because of them. I encourage anyone that is looking for someone that can't be found to use them. I used other companies and just waisted my money. They are miracle workers and you can tell they actually care about what they do.

About

I am a self-employed investigation and security specialist for insurance-fraud, store loss-prevention, or unfaithful spouse. I have the expertise and training required to be successful in conducting surveillances. This requires the ability to blend in with various situations, and to be successful in this, one must often think outside the box. While assigned to the Attorney's General Office, I oftentimes worked plain clothes details. One occasion there was an area with numerous lookouts and the department needed specific on individuals, I rigged an old car to cut off at a certain time and coordinated with a marked police patrol unit to come by and harass me in view of the perpetrators, after getting into a verbal argument with the assigned unit in full view of the perps. I lifted up the hood of my car and spent the next hour getting dirty and drinking water out of a beer can while observing all the drug activity. This resulted in obtaining a warrant being obtained for that location and successful prosecution through my testimony.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a private investigator do?

First and foremost, good private investigators follow laws. Unlike on TV, they don’t break in windows or hack into hospital computer systems to get you intel. When you hire a private investigator, you’re hiring a professional to gather facts and find information for you. Although they can’t obtain certain information (such as health records), they do have access to information that most civilians do not. Often private investigators are hired to perform surveillance or background checks or investigate cases such as adultery, child custody, missing persons, hidden assets, or debugging, and theft or other crimes.

Private investigators can be hired to interview people and provide that information to the client, perform photo or video surveillance, monitor activity at a location where you suspect criminal activities or questionable behavior, track a person’s movements, find missing people, do deep-dive background checks, and more. Private investigation can be helpful if you’re trying to get a court order but need evidence. Private investigators can also help find birth parents. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210 per hour.

What does a private investigator cost?

Private investigation isn’t just for blockbuster action movies. Hiring a private investigator can help in all kinds of situations ranging from finding a birth parent to improving personal security. Nationally, the average price range for private investigation is $70-$210, although pricing often hovers between $40 and $100 depending on the complexity of the services you need. Where you live in the country will affect your costs for private investigation; larger cities have higher business overhead and a higher cost of living, which in turn means higher service rates. The complexity of your case can also affect cost. A basic background check may have a flat rate, while hiring a private investigator to help with your child custody case may require more legwork and research, and therefore cost more. Some private investigators work on retainer. A retainer is essentially a nonrefundable deposit you pay to the professional — meaning you have retained their services — who then works against that amount. Here are some examples of average private investigation costs:

  • Hourly rate: $60-$70; costs can vary based on current fuel prices.
  • Flat rate: $100 for comprehensive background investigation services.
  • Retainer: $1,500 minimum retainer required by some pros before starting work.
