This was the first time I have ever hired a mover in my life! I started my search using Thumbtack - requesting quotes from Local Movers. Ronel from Simply Moving contacted me right away and then worked with me for weeks while I planned and fine tuned my move. She followed up and stayed in touch regularly. When I finally committed to my move date, I told her that I was nervous using a mover because I had heard so many horror stories. I told her I needed Simply Moving to be awesome on my move date - she said they are awesome every day! I loved that response - the confidence! And it was so true! On the move day, they showed up on time, packed and wrapped all the furniture and moved my boxes out to the truck. We made a stop at my storage unit - the guys quickly and efficiently emptied that and then on to the new apartment. At the apartment they got all the furniture up the stairs and into the apartment without a bump or scratch. I honestly couldn't be more happy with my experience and the professionalism that was shown by the Simply Moving Team!

Many are the times I have heard horrific stories from acquaintances regarding their experience with moving companies. However, my cooperation with the Seka movers left me feeling so proud. Everything was done excellently by them with no breakages, damages or missing items.

I had a wonderful experience with this moving company. I reached out to David Wright for a last minute move and he was able to secure 3 movers and a truck within a few hours. The movers andie, john and wayne (i believe i got the names right) called when they were 5 minutes away and showed up on time. They were very friendly, helpful and professional. They got the job done with no hesitation! They even knew strategies on how to get certain furniture out of my doorway, which was very narrow. I am so thankful to come accross this moving company. The owner David even reached out to me during the move to ensure that it was going okay. I truly appreciate that as well! I am beyond satisfied with my experience and I will recommend this company to others! Definitely worth every dollar that was spent. Keep up the good work!

This was my first big move and my first time hiring movers. Movers-For-A-Cause exceeded my expectations in every way. My husband and I were anxious and not-quite-finished packing when our three movers arrived; they were friendly, funny, efficient, and patient. All of our items were treated with care and arrived safely. Our movers made the moving process smoother and more pleasant than expected, and their calm, professional energy eased my family's anxiety from the moment they came through the door.

CCS handled my move and they did a really great job. The movers Sylla, Gilbert and David were super nice and knew their stuff. The quote was really good and was cheaper than a few of the other quotes I had received. I would use CCS again for my next move and I'm planning on recommending them to some of my friends. Good price, reliable and easy to deal with. Thanks!

I have a fashion company and required help with a few important large shipments that needed to be packed and moved. Dariusz and his team showed up well before time with all the necessary tools and equipment and finished everything much earlier than expected. Having used several other professionals before, I can confidently say my experience with Household Service Co was spectacular! Everything was seamless and my bulk shipments were packed and moved perfectly. To top it all, Dariusz is a wonderful person and a delight to deal with. The team at Household Service Co are by far one of the most professional movers and packers I have hired. A brilliant experience overall. I highly recommend their services and I am sure to hire them again!

Quicklyn saved my life this week. Moving out of a large long term rental that was in dire need of a deep clean. When I say dire, I mean DIRE. Movers stood me up on morning of move, which meant the cleaner had to work around so much stuff. It didn't matter, because she was so amazingly thorough that I was in absolute aw. She worked on a room until it was clean. This is very important. She was concerned with actually cleaning the space, not the clock. I scheduled her to come back the next day to do the rest of the apartment. Had to leave and she locked up and left everything immaculate for my return the next morning. I cannot imagine a better experience. I am so grateful!

I really enjoyed working with Alex who set everything up. He was extremely responsive and answered all my questions. The movers were also good. They worked really hard and did not waste any time. My complaint is that they didn't communicate much and did not follow a lot of direction of where I wanted my things. In the last hours, they started combining rooms (for example kitchen with bedroom and living rooms items in the same box) so it was hard to find when unpacking. They also overly packed some items (wasting material), but other things were bare and I'm not sure how they didn't break. But overall, they got the work done which is what I wanted. Be aware the estimate may off. I expected them to be there for 3 hours for my 1 bedroom apt (appliances were not part of the move) and they ended up being there for 8 hrs instead, which put me way over budget.

I reached out to Vlad in a bit of a predicament. Due to a perfect storm of a vacationing loan officer, a confused appraiser, an eager builder, and a noncommunicative landlord, I knew that I had to move within a 12-hour period in the next week. I just didn't know which day. I called around to about 5 movers, and emailed 10 more, only Vlad was willing to be "on call". After inputting all my information, Vlad sent me a non-binding estimate (More on that later). Later that week I emailed him with an exact date, less than 48 hours in advance, he quickly agreed. On the day of the move, I told Vlad that I wanted to move as early as possible, he gave me an hour window, 8am-9am. He showed up 7:30am ready to move. My wife wasn't fully ready, so they started in the other rooms until she left for work. Packing went well. I had done nearly no packing. My wife had an overnight bag, and I had walked around for about an hour throwing things out. Other than that we were totally unprepared (laundry was still on the floor and my mail was on the counter). The men weren't phased and packed through the morning, ending at around noon. There was a slight delay caused by a double-booked freight elevator, but they were as efficient as possible. I did ask that they eat lunch while we waited to save time, and they declined. But I can't complain because they ate while they drove and didn't waste any time (they arrived at the new house withing 10 minutes of me getting the keys). Plus, I wouldn't have wanted to have my lunch at a jobsite while the customer was watching, so why would they? As for the actual packing, they did a great job of using a sane amount of materials, and saved money by using my own luggage and boxes where appropriate. Other movers (especially when you buy boxes from them), use thirty sheets of paper, bubble wrap, and a two boxes to wrap up a cup of pens. Vlad and his men were more selective, saving me money (as well as aggravation during the unpack). Unloading was also a breeze. There was one box explosion, one broken glass, one misplaced box, and few possible dings, but nothing noteworthy, costly, or too aggravating. The total bill came within $100 of the estimate, which was extremely reasonable considering the delay with the elevator, and the cursory description of the apartment. I would definitely recommend them to a friend, especially one that was using them to pack. Vlad and his men are extremely helpful, reasonably priced, highly efficient, and the quality of their work is above-average.

They sent 4 men to do the job and everyone of them were friendly, courteous and efficient. They handled all of my stuff and packed and taped my furniture with care. I have already recommended them to my brother who is moving next month. I don't usually give recommendations but they deserve it. One of the movers gave us a little "concert" on my piano after they were done and we thought he was awesome. Highly recommend!

These guys are super professionals!!! Absolutely smooth and no-stress moving!!!! A friendly team of Serghei (foreman), Ivan and Vitali moved 2bdrm apartment for me. They were very careful with furniture, worked very fast without breaks, they had all necessary equipment to wrap the furniture up, to disassemble some parts. My order was a last minute call as I wasn't happy with the service I've booked from another moving agency. Thus, Redhat Moving managed to arrive on time and move all the stuff at the very short notice. This awesome crew not only wrapped, packed and moved 2 bdrm, they demonstrated their professionalism on a highest level possible. Very strong, hard working, enduring men!!!!! I'm very grateful!Absolutely amazing job!!!! I'm also very thankful to John, who took my call, was very supportive, honest with fees and charges and helped me to resolve very stressful situation with previous "movers". Redhat Moving provides reliable, professional on time service. Having a lot of experience with other moving companies, I'm strongly convinced that Redhat Moving is the best moving company in NY. THANK YOU!!!!!!

Mack from Always Moving and his crew worked effortlessly and tirelessly for hours all while maintaining professionalism and courtesy. After calling several movers and getting estimates, Mack stood out from the rest not only because of value, but also because of responsiveness and politeness which is something you usually don't get from moving companies. Because of this I felt extremely comfortable and confident that my move would go smoothly and my furniture and valuables would arrive at my new home safely. Everything went better than expected and I am so happy I chose Mack!

This company is full of true professionals. I really cannot recommend this company more. The price was more than reasonable (when moving all of your valuable possessions I do not suggest trying to cut corners and going for cheap. You truly get what you pay for). We got the packing service and had several very heavy items. I loved one of the movers responses when I warned him how heavy one of our pieces was: "there is no such thing as heavy sir." The packing and moving was flawless.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
