The installation in my apartment was efficient, artful and well-executed. I have done this a few times and this was by far the best experience I have had. Twenty-five or so pieces were hung on my walls in under two hours and very well hung at that.

I hired Upholstery Works to reupholster my 2 leather dinning room chairs. I wanted a change of color and fabric. I met Arturo to view samples of fabrics. Arturo came to me and was very professional, helpful and very responsive. The quality of work was excellent. I couldn’t believe how beautiful my chairs looked and how perfect the fabric looked. The chairs were dropped off in my house which was awesome and worked out with my busy schedule. I will definitely recommend this company. I thank Upholstery Works for making my chairs look beautiful and go so well with my new home decor.

Leonardo is THE BEST! came on time, very professional, extremely experienced and has a calm and friendly demeanor. He put together a bookcase, a bench and hung some pictures for me and he was really pleasant to hang out with. Honest and diligent and calm...all traits that make having someone in your apartment with a toddler much easier! I would hire him again in a second and his pricing was extremely fair.

I hired Joe and his team to install baseboard molding and I was under a time crunch. They sent me the insurance docs within an hour after he left my apartment for my coop board and assured me he would complete the work within two days. He kept his word and delivered on craftsmanship. The baseboard molding came out great. We also had him hide the cable lines behind the baseboard molding which was something his foreman recommended. What a great idea! Thanks for your help Joe!

Arati helped us with our new one bedroom apartment. We didn't know how we should paint the walls and Arati guided us to the right colors and placement. She really gave us confidence and advised us on how we can reach the look we wanted for our new home. From paint to furniture advise and furniture layout options, Arati gave us several options to consider as a solution for any question or concern we had for our space to give room for our own interpretation and taste. Overall it was a very pleasant experience and I would gladly hire Arati again.

Theresa is such a life saver! She has helped me move not once but twice, making the entire process so painless. She is so helpful, honest and professional — helped me remove items I didn’t need, organize my closet and bedroom, and redecorate other areas of my home. It was so nice relying on her to get my new homes in order, I’ve already recommended her to several friends!

What Carol & Diane have done for my house, is beyond outstanding and amazing. I wouldn't use anyone else for the decorating/decor of my home. So many friends and family have commented on how beautifully decorated my home is. Warm, cozy, yet not stuffy. I highly recommend HOMEesque... I wish I could give this a 10 star rating ??

Our painter, Wonil, went above and beyond and did a great job painting our apartment. Would have been 5 stars, except communication when booking could have been better--the job started a day later than expected, and the final bill included substantial non-paint materials costs that were not estimated in the quote.

Ms. King turned my run down two bedroom apartment into a beautiful home in less than 2 months. I had found Ursallie through this site and I am so glad I did! She did a fabulous job in "refreshing" my apartment. She helped me break out of my box and suggest amazing ideas when it came to paint colors, furniture and wall accents. She even refurbished my couch and lounge chair based on her own design and it came out beautiful. She was always professional and got back to me right away. She also has a great personality and made me feel at ease. What made me feel even better was that she personally over saw all the work. She was at my apartment with the workers and paid great attention to detail. She never pushed me into anything. For that I am grateful. I highly suggest using Rococo Design. You won't regret it!

Julie Holzman of Holzman Interiors designed the new kitchen in my coop apartment, built 1911, as well as two bathrooms. The results are splendid. Julie considered the character of the building, listened to my own thoughts, and designed a kitchen of elegance and gravity that looks completely "meant to be" -- and also has tons of storage space. The baths are beautiful: one is sumptuous and serene, the other is playful and delightful. Julie is deeply experienced and also easy-going and easy to work with -- never a hint of impatience even when I was looking at every white tile in NYC trying to find just the right white. Our contractor was impressed with her attention to detail and quickness in trouble-shooting. They made a great team. As for her design sensibility and taste, it is very refined; at the same time, she is open-minded. It's a winning combination. Working with Julie was FUN.

It is with much confidence that I highly recommend Darlene Cohen of Design Cache Interiors, to you for your decorating & interior design needs. Darlene worked with me to design my apartment in Trump Plaza, NYC, which was a challenging space in several areas, due to size. However, Darlene was able to come up with a great plan, layout, color scheme, which has made for a beautiful look that works perfectly! I would highly refer Darlene for any size home, office or apartment, as she certainly has a great eye and is on point - spot on in what I wanted my apartment to look & feel like. Leslie S.

Simon is an artist! I'm renovating my apartment and I had five pine antique pieces that were in terrible shape. What I got back from Simon was absolutely beautiful work done on my furniture. Impeccable work! The pieces look like they just came from a store. I'm thrilled with the results! Simon is worth every penny! As soon as I move back, I will publish before and after pictures.

Angelika worked on a residential project for me at my home on Fifth Avenue in New York City, in which she led the project management for a complex apartment remodeling. She worked very effectively with the general contractor and various subcontractors, and did an excellent job with all aspects of the renovation, including the design work at the onset. She coordinated the work of various contractors and artisans, some of whom were not very cooperative. Angelika helped bring the project to conclusion in a timely manner, interacted very effectively with all of the subs, and ensured that the job got done on budget and on a reasonable schedule. Perhaps most importantly, she brought her creative skills to the project and made the renovation beautiful. Harvey B

Working with Jacqueline on my bedroom remodel was a breeze and a very pleasant experience! She was quite thorough in explaining the design process and setting expectations, giving me peace of mind and confidence in her abilities. She patiently listened to my needs and took my input into consideration in revising the initial concepts. While the the final design took a little longer than anticipated, it was worth the wait. I'm really pleased with the output and product selections!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
