We love working with Jay. We bought the 5 session package and have enjoyed every single minute of working with Jay. He is very passionate about what he does and really likes to get to know not only your animal but you as well. He really made the training of our dog Tommy a family affair and included our young children as well. He was never rushed for time, always showed up on time with a smile and lots of tips and information. We love his gentle way of training. Because of Jay we now have a very well behaved and trained dog we can enjoy for a long time to come. And we know we can always count on Jay in case anything comes up. We highly recommend him.

Wonderful experience with Suzanne who has worked beautifully with our 10 month old dog and was able to give us lots of practical advice to train the dog. Suzannne was also very good with the children, helping them understand their role in the dog's training.

Ariana is a true professional and expert when it comes to dog training. I have two small dogs that needed training for pulling and aggression on walks and Ariana provided specific, hands-on, training and tips while we went on our evening walk. Joan is a kind and loving person, and brings these qualities to her superb dog training. She helped Sidney Cha-Cha, our miniature poodle pup, with anxiety and incessant barking. We are grateful for her assistance, and our dogs will miss her presence in our home. Highly recommended!

I began working with Rick about a month ago to assist with my 18-month old pitbull, Petunia. Petunia had become aggressive to strangers (e.g., lunging, barking aggressively) when out in public and in the home and I was very much beside myself with how to address the behaviors. We had attempted obedience training at the pet store which did not correct the problem and she continued to worsen. People were afraid of my little pitty and I was developing a sense of hopelessness and resignation where I no longer even wanted to take her for walks and just figured we would have to live a limited lifestyle with her. As a last ditch effort to address Petunia's aggression, I had a consultation with Rick. He took an hour to meet with us to evaluate her. Petunia aggressively barked and lunged the whole time at Rick, but he thought she could be helped and we signed on for the ride. What a journey it has been. In less than a month, I have a restored sense of hope that Petunia can reach her full potential as a wonderful pet. With several training sessions and several trips to stay with Rick, Petunia is now heeling, is much more under control, is not barking aggressively or lunging on walks, and appears more calm and mellow overall. Rick has also taken much time to continuously meet and/or consult with me and my boyfriend on how to maintain the progress by teaching us how to handle Petunia on our own. We are still in the midst of Petunia's training, but I can see a complete 180 in her and am forever grateful that we made the decision to work with Rick. I highly recommend him without hesitation.

The best way for me to describe my experience with Bruce Stone and Interdyne International K-9 would be to say that I feel like I hit the dog training lottery. I was recommended by a friend, but for anyone out there that really wants to see how well behaved their dog has the capacity to be, he IS the answer. He is a phenomenal teacher, extremely knowledgeable and absolutely a true professional in every respect. His always prepared, straightforward, and confident approach immediately gives you the feeling that you and your dog are both in extremely competent hands. It was some of the best money I've ever spent.

We have not completed our puppy training yet but so far all is going well. Josh connected with my puppy right away as if she knew him already and responded to his reward-based training technique right away. He also gave us a lot of information on how to care for our puppy.

Kristin is not just a skilled trainer of obedience like many of the trainers I spoke with, she tunes into the dogs emotional needs,ie. stress level/anxiety, activity level as well as their medical needs. She worked with my dog in her home and consulted with my doctor on a regular basis about tests run to rule out causes that may have contributed to her poor behavior. She communicates with the client clearly and effectively. I would recommend Kristin and Blue Butterfly Dog Training without any reservation whatsoever.

Gus has just started walking my dog this week during the day while I'm at work. My dog is shy and within a couple of sessions, he warmed up to Gus and now he wags his tail when he hears him at the door. I am very pleased with Gus' service.

My dog training session with Faryn was impressive and her professional way of teaching is definitely 100% outstanding. Faryn provided helpful tips to improve my dog’s response when giving certain commands. When I first adopted my dog, one of the many challenging obstacles I came across was the constant pulling on the leash my dog will do. Before meeting with Faryn I was contemplating on how to improve my walks with my dog, WOW was that difficult and annoying. However, after the first training session with Faryn, my dog no longer pulls on the leash as much as before. In fact, these last couple of days I enjoy my long walks at the park with my dog. Thank You Faryn,

Michelle was so professional and friendly. She explained how each day would be structured for my dog and sent me videos of him following commands. There is a considerable improvement after one week. Our shiba Inu is quite stubborn but Michelle has got rid of some of his bad behaviors. I have already booked my dog in for a two week stay next year when I am away overseas. I would highly recommend Michelle!

She answered a little later than I expected but she made up for it with her service. I was in a terrible mood because I had been fighting with my husband about finding a dog walker because Poppy tends to pee all over the house, and when I met Ruby she was very friendly and warm. My bad mood went away and she treated my dog so nice. I would definitely book with her again!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

    • What type of training methods do you use?
    • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
    • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
