Leonardo is outstanding! He is an artisan with many talents. He did a beautiful job repairing my coffee table and we chatted a bit during the process. I learned he is also a millworker and lighting designer so we're now working on more projects together. He is charming, honest, and fastidious.

Arati helped us with the interior design of our restaurant. Her services exceeded our expectations. She is highly knowledge and her skills are unsurpassed. She is talented and an amazing designer. She has an impeccable taste which just made the project spectacular. She created a look that is representative of our style, distill our taste and ideas into a design that suited our need and budget. She came up with an easy to understand system to help design the place. She worked very closely with our contractor and found the right mix that worked for all of us. Her design concept and creativity was fabulous. Her color concept is simple put UNIQUE! First we were skeptical of using her choice of colors for walls and curtains but the end result was AWESOME. She followed thru the entire project, designing, shopping for paint, furniture, etc. There is a tremendous value in using her services. Afterward, I even used her services to redesign the interior of my house. Great experience. just awesome!!!

I requested ideas on how to rearrange my living room so that I could use part of it as an art studio. Brigette King of Design Frix came to my apartment and made several suggestions and also hired a person who could do the work to affect these changes. Ceiling fixtures were removed and moved around to make the lighting work better. Furniture was moved around to achieve a neat look for the living room even though I will be using part of it to work in. I am happy with the results.

Julie Holzman of Holzman Interiors designed the new kitchen in my coop apartment, built 1911, as well as two bathrooms. The results are splendid. Julie considered the character of the building, listened to my own thoughts, and designed a kitchen of elegance and gravity that looks completely "meant to be" -- and also has tons of storage space. The baths are beautiful: one is sumptuous and serene, the other is playful and delightful. Julie is deeply experienced and also easy-going and easy to work with -- never a hint of impatience even when I was looking at every white tile in NYC trying to find just the right white. Our contractor was impressed with her attention to detail and quickness in trouble-shooting. They made a great team. As for her design sensibility and taste, it is very refined; at the same time, she is open-minded. It's a winning combination. Working with Julie was FUN.

It is with much confidence that I highly recommend Darlene Cohen of Design Cache Interiors, to you for your decorating & interior design needs. Darlene worked with me to design my apartment in Trump Plaza, NYC, which was a challenging space in several areas, due to size. However, Darlene was able to come up with a great plan, layout, color scheme, which has made for a beautiful look that works perfectly! I would highly refer Darlene for any size home, office or apartment, as she certainly has a great eye and is on point - spot on in what I wanted my apartment to look & feel like. Leslie S.

I would highly recommend Marni for your interior decorating. I had a 300 sq ft apartment that needed everything and fast. She came out looked at it and measured everything out that same week. She had good ideas and listened to what I wanted and came up with different things for me to pick from. She was always there for me to talk to and was fast to get everything done. Everything is in the apartment in less than 3 weeks and looks great. I have worked with at least 5 other decorators on other homes in the past and have always run into some problems with them. I cannot tell you how easy and wonderful it was to work with Marni. I give her 6 stars out of 5!!

I have engaged Angelika in several projects over the years, including kitchen and bathroom design and other small projects. Have always been impressed by her creativeness and flexibility of design ideas. If you have a sense of what you want (or what you don't want), but need someone to bring it to life or find the right look for you (I've had both experiences with her), Angelika is an excellent designer. She won't hesitate to suggest directions you may not have thought of, but will always return to what you want/what works for you. On my kitchen I knew what I wanted structurally and high level look, but was struggling with completing the concept. She blended things that I never thought could have worked together -- until she laid them out for me to see. It has become a centerpiece of the apartment.

Tracey at B.Home interiors is in my opinion the best choice for interior design in Northern New Jersey. Tracey just "knows" what is stylish and current but not trendy and brings that wisdom and attention to detail to all of her projects. No two projects look the same and there is always a special little nugget in each room that makes it unique and personal.

I cannot sing enough praises about this dynamic design duo! I have been working with Tim and Stuart for several years now, and have had the great pleasure of completing numerous projects together. Regardless of the scope of work, seemingly impossible deadlines, or high profile purchaser, I know without a shred of doubt my clients will be in the best of hands. I recently worked on converting a massive grocery warehouse into 335 apartments along the Brooklyn Waterfront, and Warner York was able to provide interior design help to several of my buyers. Each was handled with the upmost professionalism, and their homes were tailored perfectly to fit their personalities. Each unique and handled with the upmost care. I always look forward to collaborating with this team and hold them in the upmost regard, they consistently go above and beyond. You will not be disappointed when you enlist for their services!

Loved working with Tanya she knows her stuff. She literally handled everything from A-Z. We checked in from time to time but otherwise we let her do thing. Her portfolio is impressive, my wife always contacted her in the evening, and she always picked up our calls and answered any questions. If you are looking to use an honest designer with good experience at an affordable rate then give her call. I am glad we did.

I know Meryl from her beautiful work along the east coast. She has helped me with remodeling and designing my master bathroom, coordinating perfect paint colors for both the interior and exterior of my home, as well as helping me with space planning of all my furniture. I absolutely LOVE everything she has done in my home. I know many people in the area who have also used Meryl Stern Interiors in their homes, offices, and restaurants and her ability to create warm and beautiful spaces is truly a talent!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
