I signed up for Spanish lessons with Sara about two months ago to prepare for living in Peru for a while. I cannot say enough good things about my lessons with Sara. She is smart and patient, provides useful feedback and encouragement constantly, and has an abundance of interactive activities that help to solidify different concepts. Every week my knowledge of how Spanish worked expanded and my ability to confidently speak and understand the language improved. Sara is incredibly professional as well; she was always prepared for our lessons well before they began and our lessons almost always ended up going for more than an hour. She also always had my homework corrected before we would meet, so we could quickly review the lesson from the previous week and move forward. Sara molded my lessons around what I wanted and needed to learn, and went above and beyond in providing additional resources to study outside of our sessions each week. She has a knack for simplifying difficult concepts and making language-learning FUN rather than a chore.

I had felt very nervous just before i started to take English lessons from Raul. I had some anxiety and a negative thought about i will never learn English. After taking my first class, i changed my negative thought. I have been taking English class for 2 months and i feel the differences and improvements on my language skills. Raul is a perfect teacher. He is so professional and informed about how to teach. He makes me more courageous to learn English every day. He is also very patient, kind, friendly and understanding. He shares all his informations, sources and experiences about what you want to learn. Learning with him is a big joy. I feel not only happy but also very lucky to know him and to take class from him.

After years of procrastinating, I finally started taking Spanish lessons. Beatrice has made the process both stress free and enjoyable. She develops lesson plans to provide the needed basics, but can adjust faster or slower based on my ability to absorb the information. Beatrice is both friendly and patient and she is thoroughly knowledgeable in the Spanish language.

I have been taking Spanish lessons from Roberto Talavera for one year. I never had much formal Spanish instruction, so was looking for classes to help me learn grammar and improve my conversational skills. It has been highly motivating to have one on one lessons with Roberto. He is professional, patient, and is able to tailor the lessons to my level of knowledge. He supplements the lessons with homework that incorporates a variety of styles, including novels, music, and video interviews. In the past year since I have been taking lessons with Roberto, my confidence in Spanish has improved and I am able to communicate more effectively with clients at work. I highly recommend Roberto Talavera.

My 10 year old son started trumpet lessons with Connor Frost - FrostForward Learning at the beginning of the summer. Connor is an enthusiastic, friendly and very dedicated instructor. He has done an amazing job teaching not only the fundamentals and notes but inspiring the love of the instrument. My son is now excited about attending band at school and is practicing often in hopes of being considered for a spring concert solo. Thank you Connor for all that you do!!!

Romina was very outstanding. She was patient to my daughter who was having trouble in her Spanish class. She went slow and easy, and her instructions were easy for my daughter to understand. She gave my daughter very good tips, and I suggest Romina for many.

I’ve only been meeting with Humberto about a month but it’s been very helpful to keep my Spanish learning going. Lessons are a mix of conversation, vocabulary/passage work, and grammar work. I had previously taken classes but I’ve appreciated the flexibility of being able to schedule a time that works best for me each week. The near grand central location is also very convenient.

Saul is a very talented and patient teacher. He takes his time getting to know what you want out of lessons, and is very flexible in his approach. When one way wasn't working, he found another. As someone who desperately wanted and needed to learn guitar, but sorely lacking in "natural ability", he was a perfect fit for me as a teacher. He brought me a long, LONG way in a short period of time. I highly recommend him!

About

Fluent City classes are geared towards learning, but we also make sure that the process is super fun. Our energetic and approachable teachers create a relaxed environment for you to take on the challenge of learning a language alongside like-minded people. There is a huge difference between knowing how to speak a language and knowing how to teach it, and we pride ourselves on hiring teachers who are ridiculously good at what they do: explaining how the language works and getting you to speak it immediately. Our beginner classes are usually taught by non-native speakers…on purpose! They are often Americans who learned the language themselves as adults. Our teachers understand, firsthand, everything that goes into learning a language because they were once students of the language themselves, which informs the very way they explain how it works to you. Native speakers or teachers with native-level fluency usually teach our higher-level classes. We love seeing our students flourish linguistically while having fun, making friends, and meeting new people!

About

I come to teach Spanish & Computer with an extensive background not only as a Computer Scientist, but as a Spanish coach and public school educator. My years of experience as a professional Teacher and facilitator combined with my passion for teaching has given me great insight and may provide my students a portal that can lead them towards reaching their true potential, becoming an expert in Computer program applications and a World Language Spanish speaker as well. My favorite parts of my current job included the ability to work independently & the people I worked with. It’s great to work with people that care about their duties and doing a good job. It’s hard to find that environment today because so many people just don’t care about honesty, hard work & integrity.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
