Excellent!!! Quick response and the job was done quickly and professionally. We hired Milton to knock down two old stone pillars, and the site was left in perfect condition. Highly recommend, and we will use him again soon!

Giovani was amazing to work with. Before we did anything he helped us figure out all the details of our patio before he started. He was very fast and efficient in the end and gave us an amazing patio. I highly recommend him.

Manuel and his crew re-tiled walls and floors of my bathroom, straightened a toilet drain pipe by removing an offset flange which had caused stoppage, and re-installed new vanity, mirror, and toilet. Most professional job, clean, looks awesome. Having him now work on a new stone floor in the kitchen. Thanks Manuel

Justin is very professional and takes pride in his work. He's very attentive to detail. He works really hard to get the job done. And on time. I had part of my yard reseeded. He and his crew were at my property on time and worked diligently. He's come back twice since the job was done to ensure that the grass is growing and he continues to monitor the progress. I highly recommend him. I will definitely use him again for my next project of installing pavers for my fire pit.

Working with HomeThesis was an absolute joy! Let’s face it, no one likes dealing with contractors, but these guys made the process so much fun. I had them remodel my entire lower level and renovate two of my bedrooms. First and foremost, these guys are SO Clean! They covered up anything that might get dusty, including my car. Once they’re done for the night, they go around vacuuming and dispose of all the trash. Second, they’re so amazingly artistic. I wanted a stone wall but they talked me in to doing a Venetian plaster wall that simulated 12X24 stone tile. They even incorporated a concealed door on this wall which leads to my office. The end result is absolutely stunning. Third, their wood working skills are amazing. They had to patch up a floor that I already had refinished and the match was absolutely spot on. Fourth, they have incredible contacts for high quality doors, cabinets, stone, plumbers and etc. These guys are a one stop shop. My wife and I work full time but we felt like we were all in on the process because they live stream the project on instagram for you! Thanks very much! Can’t wait till we move on to the next phase of our remodel.

Moises was a pleasure to work with. He was very responsive in communication, fair in price, and did a fantastic job cleaning up our yard and getting all leaves to the curb as requested. I already had neighbors reach out to me and ask who did such great work? I would easily recommend Moises and his team to anybody looking for high-quality work with a very fair price.

Five stars!!! Dan did an amazing job on my lawn. He removed all the leaves and overgrown weeds surrounding my house and restored my beautiful stone path. For such a big lawn he finished in no time and was kind enough to offer even more of his services. I will definitely be hiring them again in the future not only for landscaping but for any new home improvement projects. Thanks dan!

Evan and his team did a great job on my lawn and patio. They removed my entire weed-infested front lawn, re-seeded and now my front yard looks like a golf course. I also asked them to create a stone patio and it turned out perfect! I use them now on a regular basis for all my outdoor projects because of their expertise and very reasonable rates.

Was in desperate need of a backyard makeover after buying my house 4 months ago and fighting nonstop to bring the yard back to life myself. I finally gave up and let the professionals handle it. Anthony, Chris and the team fought a downpour and delays but got the job done in a day, 1450ft of sod, planted grasses and plants and roses, mulched the flower beds, put in a walkway of blue stone pavers. I finally have a yard I am proud to look at. Cant wait to see it in about 2 weeks when the sod starts to grow and the plants roots take hold, thanks again guys

Green Knoll has been doing my lawn & plowing for several years. They have also done my landscaping recently & have done a very neat, professional job in whatever they did & will be doing my outdoor work for years to come. I also had brick walkway work done & again a very neat, professional job was done. A beautiful job was done grading, packing down & lining my stone driveway with landscaping lumber. I highly recommend their work & reliability. I have been very pleased with everything that was done for me.

I own a landmark brownstone in the Boerum Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn. Adam Silver has done work for me at various times during the past several months. His work is excellent. He has restored and repaired the iron work on the window gates, fence and bannister in the front of my house and completely renovated the ground-level vestibule. He made improvements that other contractors said they could not do, i.e. he was able to take off the heavy layer of cement that had covered the ceiling and walls of the vestibule exposing the original brick and blue stone. He also took off the cement on the side of the staircase exposing the original brick, cemented the crawl space, and expertly sanded and painted the inner door and frame. Oh, what a difference! I couldn't be happier. Adam is not only affordable but he is a perfectionist about his work, always responsible wanting to please and very easy to deal with. I would highly recommend Silverworks.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
