My husband and I went to Vladimire for marriage counseling. Vladimire is very easy to talk to and provide insightful and nonjudgemenyal input in a gentle way. She doesnt forget about you after your session....she messages small messages of positivity and advice in between sessions which somehow always seem to apply. She has suggested journaling assignments between sessions which can be difficult, thought provoking and groundbreaking if you decide to put in the effort. She is culturally empathetic. She is also flexible and accommodating to busy schedules. She never let's you leave unresolved just because time is up. You end up feeling like you are sharing with a good friend who cares for both of your well beings as individuals and as a whole equally.

My fiancé and I went to Joan for premarital counseling. Joan was approachable and really put us at ease. She gave us some good pointers for how to strengthen our relationship. While she didn't have a particular pre-marital curriculum for us to follow, she did create a safe space for us to talk about difficult topics.

My wife insisted we go to counseling since we were fighting all the time. I was skeptical, but Alison made me feel comfortable. She didn't take sides or make me "the bad guy." She taught us how to speak to each other so that we wouldn't keep going in circles and getting madder. She helped us both see our part in the problems and gave us ways to make things better. We're better parents now as well, not only because the kids don't have to see us fighting, but because we're calmer and have better strategies for dealing with conflict. I'm so glad we went. My wife and I haven't been this happy since we were first married.

I've had the privilege of working with Lorraine for over 6 years now, first in couples counseling sessions and subsequently in solo therapeutic sessions. I've found the work we've done in her office to be transformational both to my relationship and engagement in the rest of my life. Whether we're untangling historic patterns, or giving voice to my current fears and troubles, her questions and thoughts are incisive and cut to the heart of the issue. In addition to remarkable intelligence, Lorraine brings to bear a vast well of empathy that has allowed me to come as I am, however I am, whenever I need to and always expect to be greeted with the same openness; the same safe space. She is clear and thoughtful and her words have helped guide me to some of the most profound revelations of my adult life. Time spent in session with her is never time wasted. In addition, I have done two past life regressions with Lorraine and they have been truly fascinating; guiding me to places within myself that reveal the underlying histories behind what had always seemed to be irrational fears or concerns. In knowing those histories, the regressions have given me yet another tool to help me navigate my path in life. I'm so grateful to have found her. Julia M

As a counseling practioner, I use discretion when selecting my own therapist and marriage counselor. Tina quickly picks up the pulse of each individual as well as the dynamic between them. Her incisive and insightful comments are offered judiciously. She maintains high standards of integrity viz. HIPAA. Her availability is flexible for working couples. She balances being a caring person and professional. I highly recommend her for couples and individual therapy based on my experience with her in both areas. S.

The services provided to us by Luis Barreto were absolutely amazing. He was able to help my newly wed wife and I immemsely even considering the tight time constraints we were under and the fact that we were able to find exactly what we were searching for within such short notice. Luis was available to us through thumbtack with just three weeks to our wedding and his extensive experience was a great help as he provided ideas and was open for any input and feedback. Communication was great and he was always very punctual. Very friendly personality and exceeded our expectations in finding a great fit as an officiant to our Christian wedding.

Scott has been an invaluable therapist for me for a few years now. I've gained so many strengths and I've been able to make so many changes under his care and counseling. More recently, if it weren't for him, my situation may have eaten me alive and he was there literally every step of the way to make sure that didn't happen. His methods of therapies are wonderful. He's generous, professional, relatable, relaxing, reliable, consistent, and punctual. My favorite, though, is when he's leading into a breakthrough. He's direct enough to get you there without needing to be too "psycho-babbly". I recommend Scott 12 out of 10 times!

Pastor Bryan married us in 2015, and as simple as it may have been, he was completely on point, every step of the way. From our initial meeting, to counseling with us before the wedding, the rehearsal and the execution on the day, he and his staff were so professional and helpful. They made us feel like family, with dignity and respect!! Carl & Alicia Greene

Laura offers a warm, compassionate presence that creates a safe space for exploration. Our work together helped me tap into my tenderness and deepest longings. Being met by her loving presence provided me the opportunity to extend compassion and grace to those parts of myself that I find difficult to accept, and gave me the courage to move in the direction of my greatest aspirations. Her counsel has been such a gift, and I highly recommend her for spiritual guidance and counseling.

I really appreciate all the help Walesca has provided my family. When I lost my mother in 2013, my then 6 year old, took the loss pretty bad. I was so lucky to come across the bereavement services offered by Walesca. Through group therapy, my son was able to talk about his loss and share with other children experiencing the same. I also decided to join a bereavement support group for adults moderated by Walesca. I learned how to cope and understand my grief in a supportive environment. At the same time, I also learned how to be supportive to my son. I highly recommend Walesca and her amazing services.

    About

The therapy I practice looks at your situation from a systemic view, meaning we look at all the influencing factors to the concerns you bring to our sessions. We as humans do not live in a vacuum, and that should be considered in therapy. Family, friends, past relationships, and so much more play an integral part of who we are. I make sure the work we do is solely focused on these factors in order to help you obtain your desired goals.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.
