I have had the great pleasure to know Ms. Calixte for three years professionally. Her guidance, advice and professionalism has made it the deciding factor for why she is an Integral part in my company Haitian American Youth Online 's mission for the past four years to help youth with mental illness. She is a contributor to my company Facebook page and various platform for the youth because of her intimate understanding of the issues plaguing Haitian American youth and all youth alike. We value her opinion, suggestions and posts about bettering one's life. I would recommend her services to all as I currently do to all having Life Rebuilding dilemmas. She is genuine, sincere, and I would not be as far as I am today without her motivation and Life Rebuilding guidance, I too come to use and cherish updates about differing methods to attain greatness and peace of mind. She is a gem in the Haitian community as to all communities who welcome her expertise.

She is a very good therapist. She always responded promptly to phone calls/text messages and was very flexible with appointment times and dates. She was also available to do sessions over Skype. All this was very useful in my care as I was a busy attorney dealing with serious mental health issues. Her rates became too high for me as I had to stop working but before that she did try to work with me and offer a reduced fee. Overall, great experience and I would recommend her to others.

I have known Judi for about half of my life. She has been a beloved teacher and spiritual counselor for both myself and the rest of my immediate family. When things got too overwhelming and all the other regular avenues no longer worked, Judi was always there with a warm smile and genuine compassion. She has shown me techniques to use to cope with both childhood trauma and the newer challenges that have risen as I've entered into adulthood. Judi is a treasure trove of knowledge and inspiration.

Dan Minuchin is an outstanding family therapist, mental health consultant, trainer, teacher and clinical supervisor. I have had the fortune of working with him and observing him in all of these roles over the past several years. I initially worked with Dan about 10 years ago when I was a supervisor at agency that provided family therapy and services to families struggling with adolescents and families involved in the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. In this setting, he provided case consultation, supervision, and training to a team of social workers and family therapists. This model included live supervision and the use of a one way mirror. Dan would also accompany therapists on home visits to provide live consultations in the family's home. I later became a director of another similar family service program. I was able to hire Dan to provide Structural Family Therapy training to my entire clinical staff, as well as consultation, individual and group clinical supervision. His guidance and training was very well received by my staff and their skills as family therapists improved significantly. Dan is really a master trainer and has worked as a family therapist, teacher and trainer for several decades. He has an incredibly diverse personal and professional background and experience working with families of all walks of life. He is sensitive and well informed of the needs and experiences of families of color, immigrant families, LGBTQ families, blended families, Jewish Orthodox families, families struggling with substance abuse and mental illness, delinquent teens, children with special needs, and families dealing with divorce, loss and separation. I have referred many families to Dan and I feel confident that he is able to work with the most complex families of all backgrounds. Dan is thoughtful and empathic and has very high ethical standards. His structural and strategic approach to addressing problems is highly effective and families often will see progress in a short amount of time. I am a family therapist and clinician as well, and Dan has provided me with outstanding clinical supervision and guidance and has been instrumental in my own professional growth as a therapist and clinical supervisor.

After being involved in a life altering accident, Cheryl spent numerous hours talking with me on more than several occasions. I credit her with 80% of my mental and physical recovery. She was able, through her constant positive attitude, and encouraging words, to get my head in a place where I was able to move forward. Her nutritional counseling and recommendations helped my body to heal far faster than they would have without her advice. She will forever be my "Guardian Angel".

She is a gentle, yet courageous advocate for transformation, and I am deeply grateful to work with her.

For many years I have struggled with weight gain and unwanted inches. After trying many other popular diet plans I still found myself gaining the weight back and then some not long after stopping the plan. Like so many of you, I have a busy schedule, a long commute and (had) very poor and irregular eating habits which all made the situation seem overwhelming and worst of all discouraging. Through Social Media and my passion for Zumba®, I became acquainted with Jackie Shaheed. I was fascinated by her personal weight loss success story and her group FitPalz. On September 9th after meeting briefly with Jackie, I decided to join the group. FitPalz is a 90 Day Weight Loss Program that includes Unlimited Fitness Classes and Personal Training it also offers 24/7 support and sets apart from others with it is also being a Medically Supervised Nutrition Program. My personal appeal to the group is the fact that most of the staff has also battled with their own personal weight issues, nothing like having mentors that ‘know’ your struggles! I immediately felt I was in the hands of qualified and caring professionals. Starting at the top Jackie is a true inspiration, a qualified/certified fitness and nutrition coach, a talented Zumba® instructor and a wonderful human being. The medical team China (N.P.) and Gemma (M.D.) keep your health in check while the training staffs, Jackie, Vickie, Aaron & Darryl get you moving in proper form to ensure that you get the most out of each and every training session. If you’re like me then you probably dislike working out yet doing so with FitPalz is both challenging and enjoyable, I always feel I have the support of the trainers and of my fellow members. In a short time I surpassed my physical and mental limits. With FitPalz I have learned to change my eating habits without feeling hungry or even like I am on a diet. Gained the tools necessary to steadily and safely lose weight without disrupting my life. I am able to travel, dine out, socialize and celebrate holidays without going off track. During my 90 Day challenge I celebrated my Birthday and Thanksgiving Day yet managed to still continue to loose. In regards to my personal health, I am pleased to share that in spite of my past borderline readings and family history for high cholesterol and high blood pressure, my recent physical exam revealed both to be within perfectly normal levels. I am also an avid, “Zumbaholic”, I fell in love with the whole Zumba culture after just one class, it is everything the advertisements say it is, a fun way to “dance off” unwanted pounds and with my FitPalz program I also enjoyed unlimited fitness classes which included Zumba®, Zumba Toning® and Zumba Sentao®. Jackie, China and Kevin bring you the BEST Party in Town EVERY session. The room is filled with an abundance of positive energy that make my spirits soar long after I leave their class. I have ended my first 90 days challenge this past week during which I lost a total of 20.6 lbs and a total of 14.25 inches and were so pleased with the results that I have signed up for a second round!! If you are serious about losing weight and are willing to put in the effort, Jackie Shaheed and FitPalz is the perfect Weight Loss Program to get you there and help you maintain your success. Thank you Jackie and FitPalz for your support and inspiration. FitPalz-er for life.

I am a mental health counselor in the offices of Dr. Michael DeMarco in NYC. In therapy, people learn to explore the feelings, beliefs, and it will help them achieve their goals and happiness. Therapy can help. I particularly enjoy helping with couples who are experiencing communication and intimacy problems in their relationship. Additionally, I like helping women who are going through major life transitions (starting a family, finishing college, job loss, divorce, children leaving home) and want to "re-invent" their lives or at least expand their ideas of who they are or who they want to become. Therapy is instrumental in helping navigate through some pretty challenging times, and I think it can help you too!

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

      • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
      • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
      • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
      • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
      • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
      • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
      • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
      • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
      • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
      • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
      • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
      • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
      • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
      • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
      • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
      • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
      • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
      • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
      • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

      What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

      • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
      • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
      • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
      • Overcoming addictions.
      • Managing chronic illness.
      • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

      How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
