My wife and I recently got married and when we moved in together her dog (a Shiba Inu) which had issues before that hadn't been addressed blew up. He challenged me for dominance with a full blown teeth bared attack. At that point we realized that the previous trainers who had worked with the dog and my wife just didn't have a clue how to work with her dog. We realized we needed to do some really serious research before choosing our next and last trainer. The dog had attacked multiple times in the recent history and this was going to be his last chance. As you can imagine my wife didn't want to give him up so it was imperative that we found the best trainer out there so if we had to give him up we would feel comfortable knowing we did absolutely everything possible. After exhaustive research, we decided on Janice as the best option. The biggest reason we chose her was she told us she was NOT going to train our dog, she was going to train US. That made the most sense for us and we knew it would pay off regardless of what happened with our current dog because we would be better prepared for our next dog. Well, we didn't (and don't) have to worry, because of Janice our dog is a model dog! The things that she taught us about how to treat our dog have completely transformed our dog into a completely different and at peace dog. We really can't thank her enough for all her assistance and for always being available (to this day if we call her!) to us. Janice, you really are amazing!!! We really can't thank you enough but, thank you, thank you, thank you!!! As a side note, the things that Janice taught us are also going to be extremely helpful when we have children as far as how to treat them. The patience, rules, etc all will help us tremendously with how ever many children we have.

It was wonderful for my husband and I and for our dog as well. He is 17-1/2 years old, blind and doesn't hear anymore. The groomer was wonderful and handled our dog fanstastically. We will continue to use Grace Grooming and the cost was very reasonable!!! Very Happy Customer!

I had the pleasure of working with Caitlin, one of the trainers at The Canine Cure. We ended up board and training one of our dogs and boarding the other one as well. Caitlin took into consideration all of our concerns and did a great job building the foundation for our pups training. She was also very good about keeping us updated about both of our dogs while we were away on vacation and both of our dogs seemed like they were well taken care of during their stay. I will continue to use her services in the future and definitely would recommend her for anyone looking for a dog trainer.

Joan's approach to behavioral training is very integrated taking into account the dog's environment, diet, and activity level. It's so nice to have a trainer that can make additional recommendations beyond the standard behavioral instructions to include changes in dietary and health needs to improve the training process. We asked Joan for help with our Dachshund/Poodle cross after repeated accidents in the apartment. Within two sessions we were communicating with our puppy to understand when she needs to go out, when she just wants to play, etc. Joan has been a huge help, she's punctual and extraordinarily good with the dogs and brings a tremendous value to the process beyond just learning how to "sit." As with any dog trainer it's important to know that as the owner you're being trained as well requiring a good dose of humility. Joan handles this without condescension and always remains positive. I recommend her for training and general dog care consulting!

My father is quite possible the worst dog trainer there is. In came Dr. J and within MINUTES had his dog walking obediently at his side! This is a bird dog that is used to ranging out far and wide. Amazing! Not only good results but a FUN experience with a constant patter of enjoyable jokes. Dr. J seems to have a sixth sense about animals. Highly recommended!

She is unbelievably patient and kind and I can't wait to see my new puppy after all 6 sessions with her. First night and day with the puppy and her methods for potty training already work so well, plus other fantastic techniques in training. Can't wait for our next session! So excited to be working with someone so excellent! I couldn't recommend more! Bruno is one lucky puppy to have such a wonderful dog trainer. Me mostly! :)

I reached out to Josh for help because my dog would lash out at other dogs when we went for walks, hikes, etc. I was very pleased with his work! He arrived on time, earlier than expected, to really make sure I got the most out of my session. The quality of his work is very professional and you could tell he truly cares about helping you and your dog! He is very knowledgeable in numerous different behavioral issues, which was impressive. He taught me how to take control of my dog and now my dog is doing much better socially. Josh also responded to my emails in a timely mannner when I would have quick questions. I would highly recommend this service!!

We tried two other dog trainers before we came across Chelsea, and after speaking with her on the phone I immediately knew something was different about her, in the best possible way. She talked with us about focusing on what was causing our little guy to act out in the ways he had been, what we could and couldn't reasonably expect (this one was huge, and took a bit of vital human training on our part) and took the time to start us out with a strong foundation using techniques that worked—and that we were comfortable with—to create a lasting change in our rescue dog. You can tell Chelsea loves what she does and that she positively adores dogs and their people, too. Her approach is so affective because she treats dog psychology the same way the best specialists approach human psychology: by addressing the source of the behavior that causes the symptoms, and taking each dog's personality into account. At the same time, her methods seem to work magnificently across the board. She is brilliant, her methods are affective, she is highly professional but also extremely friendly and approachable. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to treat problematic behaviors in their beloved rescue dogs, but in any dog, really—it just takes a special person to have the knowledge and patience to work with a dog who has trauma they can never communicate with words.

Rachel has helped immensely improve the relationship I have with my dog. Thanks to Rachel, I can read the body language cues my dog is giving me. She taught me that my dog, Sasha, is uncomfortable when strollers, lawn movers or certain dogs pass, which is why she'll pull the other way or try to eat grass. Rachel is always reliable, professional, friendly, patient and understanding. Above all, she loves my dog, and my dog LOVES Rachel.

Andrea and her husband John go above and beyond to take care of our dog, a shy rescue who needed help to open up. Great value for our money. Our pup is tired out from having so much fun with her doggy friends during her walks and greets us calmly when we get home. She's also now better about welcoming strangers to pet her. Highly recommend!

Ben is always on time to pick up our dog. We know Johnny always gets a nice long walk with Ben because Johnny is an energetic dog and walks with Ben help keep him from getting stir crazy in the apartment. As a person, Ben is honest and kind and you know your dog will be treated with care.

I adopted a one year old lab –pit mix a month ago. Soon after I brought him home-I realized that he is not really house broken and loves to chew on everything. I did some research on dog trainers in my area and man- they are pricey. Came across Anastasia’s profile -prices seemed fair plus looked like she was offering more than just an obedience training for the same price. I am so happy we hired her. Sammy learned how settle and get in into his crate with no fuss in a matter of few minutes on a first session, we also established a few house rules and thanks to her recommendation for food – Sammy’s coat improved and poop too. Thank you Anastasia!

We had a very frustrated and mischievous puppy with a broken leg. We tried every trick we found in books but other than learning how to give paw, we were less then successful in training our puppy. One day, while walking down the street I saw a woman working with a dog who was following her orders instantly. I could not wait to ask her for her help. It was the best decision we ever made. Not only did she have creative ideas on how to help release our puppy's bottled up energy but she also helped train her to be a loving and calmer family dog. As we got the dog primarily for our three young son, Jenny was sure to include them in the dog training. She even went out of her way by teaching them tricks which made their interaction safer and more fun!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
