I would recommend solution based plumbing and heating not only because they do the job proficiently but because they actually take the time to cater to you and make sure you know what is going on and are comfortable the whole process. Josh is not only very knowledgeable but just all around caring about you needs and the needs of the job. Stacy keeps you informed and walks you through every step of the job, they actually care about you and not just the job. I would recommend them and use them for now on.

Mark was great. He replaced the original light fixture on a house that's almost 100 years old. The work was challenging with old electric wiring. The new chandelier looks great. His price was very fair. I already have other jobs in mind for him. I highly recommend.

Hung a chandelier, troubleshooting plumbing problems, hung artwork, did a million things I would have put off. A lifesaver after my move! Having him back for a few more projects in a few weeks!

Normally i don't write reviews, but in this case, i want to inform people about how happy i am with my choice to go with Sam of Advance Heating and Air, for total HVAC system, He truly enjoys his craft, and is proud (and should be) of his work, I was offered by a bigger company a smaller system at 4 to $5000 more, and of course the salesman tries to turn you away from local guys saying they cant do the same type work, I put my trust in Sam and his way better product and offer, and couldn't be happier, he has earned all my future business in that field, If you are in the need for any air, heat or plumbing needs, do yourself a favor and talk with Sam, he will take care of you, and like me, at a price you will be pleased with.

My experience with J.R. Builders was first-rate. Glenn was able to envision my ideas for custom-made cabinets perfectly. The new unit is absolutely beautiful in the exact Colonial style I wanted. It is also designed to support my tech gadgets and lighting, so the pesky wiring is out of sight. In addition to the built-ins, J.R. Builders did a lot of handy-man jobs for me, and those were all done skillfully. For the four days that they worked in my home, they fixed and improved on lots of items to include electrical and plumbing—anything I mentioned was fixed, and quickly. Pricing was quite fair. I am really quite pleased, and so is anyone I show the pictures to. I would recommend J.R. Builders to everyone.

Don came to take a look at my washer problem very quickly. He determined that the machine needed a new motor. He advised me to buy a new unit since the washer is 14 years old and would not be worth the repair. He also measured my space and, during a follow up call, he answered a few questions which were extremely helpful in purchasing a new washer. He did not charge me for the visit or the advice. I will hire him right away as soon as I have an electrical or plumbing problem. I highly recommend hiring this knowledgable man and his company. Thank you, Dan

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.
