I have an older house and none of the bedroom doors closed properly. After getting a quote, we hired Walter and he started work two days later. He was very professional and fixed every door perfectly. We will hire him for future projects around our house. I highly recommend him for any carpentry projects you have at your house.

Great job handling some bumps in the project. We had 3 basement windows replaced. We ordered new construction windows instead of replacement, so that added complexity but Darin was still able to complete the work quickly and make the finished product look great. He stuck to his initial quote even though it must have taken him more time than expected. The job required a lot of tools and mess but he left things looking tidy. He was also very responsive as we set up the appointment. Would definitely hire again. Thanks!

Multiple electrical jobs completed both indoor and outdoor for old and new construction for both my moms residence and mine. Response time was same day and appointments were fulfilled in less than a week. All jobs were successfully completed and there was never a need to return to fix any jobs we paid for. Also, when new electrical issues arose I was able to reach out for advisement. Prices were fair and competitive and service was high quality. All repairs were explained in lamens terms for easy understanding of problems and remedies. I have high standards with who I hire because there are a lot of scammers and low quality electricians and I don't like to pay twice. I would recommend this electrician to anyone and trust his work and feel safe having him handle all the electrical work for my home and my families homes. Cheaping out on electrical work means you pay later ....

Global Housing Contractors did a beautiful job with our bathroom renovations. We were impressed with their punctuality, reliability, and great care in protecting the rest of our home while work was getting done. Tile work was a bit involved in one of our two bathrooms, but Global Housing contractors took the extra time and care to make sure it was installed to perfection. It is obvious that customer satisfaction and quality of work are their top priority. I would wholeheartedly recommend Global Housing Contractors for all your housing makeover needs!

Glenn Scelza is a godsend. My old friend desperately needed help of a good carpenter to come and assess the benign neglect on the front of her antique home. Garage doors needed to be installed post haste, but the garage door company needed the repairs to be made first. I posted on Thumbtack and Glenn responded immediately. Glenn arrived and I could tell right away what a nice guy he is and is a seasoned carpenter/contractor. He assessed the project with a trained eye and zeroed in on what was good in terms of the construction and what looked bad to us, was very doable indeed.. He was very resourceful and made use of what could remain and shopped locally which I loved, for lumber, gutters, leaders and even found the novelty clapboard pieces to match the 1940's facade. He was very fair and open about what things would cost along with his craftsmanship which was worth every penny. I appreciate he could even work with us so late in the season even as winter weather set in. He will be present right after the holiday weekend to connect with the garage door people. When those vintage looking doors are installed the place will regain its curb appeal once again, thanks to Glenn. This guy is a keeper and I can see why is highly recommended! I add my recommendation to Thumbtack as well as our neighbors in the community. I look forward in working with Glenn on future projects. Thanks Glenn! Norm Peekskill, NY

Manny was extremely professional, he took the time to really explain to me what the issue was and the best and most cost effective way to resolve it. In addition to that he was very respectful of my tenants property and time. Thank you Manny for providing such great service, I really appreciate you coming to my property and taking care of the frozen pipe on my tenants apartment. I will definitely recommend you to my friends and family for all their plumbing needs. Thanks again and take care!

Al was great. He was incredibly personable, professional, and was able to provide same day service. DC’s value can’t be beat. While I used their junk removal service, I was please to learn that they also provide general contracting services. I’ll definitely be using them in the future.

Ndue from Kolecki Construction met me at an apartment that I wanted to buy to look at the electric, which needed to be upgraded. I didn’t end up buying the apartment or hire Ndue, but I was impressed by his responsiveness and knowledge. He met me at the building and was right on time. Buying real estate in New York is an imposing process, especially when you need to hire a contractor and don’t know where to begin. Ndue invited me to buildings where his team was working and where walls were open so that I see what they do. I still don’t have an apartment, but I’ll call him if that day comes.

We had a new roof, gutters, a fence and some other small home maintenance work done. The craftsmanship of all of the work, especially the roof, was superbly done. It's a colonial with particular edges which required hand made solutions to bring it back to its natural glory and that is exactly what was done. We were clients and sometimes students, as time was taken to explain the process, materials being used, alternate solutions etc to ensure that we were comfortable with the job. We would and we have recommended All Remodeling and Construction to others.

We found George of GB Construction through Thumbtack when we were looking for someone to replace the basement stairs. We contacted George and when he came to see the job, we explained what we needed to have done. After he measured the steps and everything else and we discussed the job, he gave us a quote. The price was very reasonable and the job was superb. Always on time and George worked incredibly hard to complete the job. We are very pleased with the job. George is very respectful, responsible, considerate and careful. Protected all surfaces and cleaned up afterwards. The workmanship is very high and we recommend GB Construction. Would we hire George again? Yes, for sure we will. Many thanks indeed!

These guys do what they say they will do and don't try to find ways to get more money out of you during construction. Actually the opposite, they used their relationships with vendors to negotiate even a better price on materials than I would have gotten on my own. Very honest and I've recommended them to other homeowners who also love their professionalism and work. A++

I did my kitchen with Longo construction and electrical in 2017 and the whole team was professional, clean and courteous, not to mention, what a beautiful job well done! The entire process with Longo construction and electrical was fun and easy! I would definitely have to refer them to anyone contemplating a renovation!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
