I contacted James. We got everything set up and James has gotten started on the project. He has accomplished a lot of the project. When we set the appointment he showed on time and ready to discuss the details. He is very professional and knowledgeable in his field. When this project is done I will call him for other jobs may come up.

I had a ton of work which I needed done on my lawn. Had a few companies come in and Rich topped them all. He provided a great and affordable plan on how to tackle the project – he even advised me against certain expensive options stating I didn't need them. And he was right – the lawn looked great after such a small amount of time and become amazing after the whole plan went full swing into affect. Thank you Rich!

I hired BT Landscaping to clear out my old, crabgrass-filled lawn and put down new seed. This was a big job and they completed it in just one day. Afterward he followed up to make sure the seeds were germinating properly and came twice to check, once repairing some soil that had washed away in a heavy storm. Daryn (sorry if I spelled that wrong) was a pleasure to deal with. He listened to my ideas and offered advice. He is extremely knowledgable about turf and he was happy to share his insight. His price was great and so was the work. I've had two other landscaping companies work on my yard and he was the best. I will be using them in the future. No complaints. Grass is already growing!

My lawn, front & back, was in very bad shape. Grass was steadily being replaced by huge patches of dirt. The lawn company I had been using tried several things, only to have the problem get worse. I called Frank at Almost Perfect and he went to my home to examine the lawn. He saw how bad it was, but told me what could be done to fix it. He wrote up a proposal for yearly maintenance, and though it was more than the company I had been using, that company was also ruining my property. So I signed with Frank. His guys made one very thorough visit and I don’t know what they put down, but I already have grass growing where there had been none for most of the year. Can’t wait to see it next Spring/Summer. I totally recommend Frank and Almost Perfect Landscaping!

I was beyond impressed with Jared! Not only is he extremely knowledgeable about horticulture, he also arrives with sincere passion for his craft. He came to check on a sick cherry tree and was able to explain to me clearly what the issue is and what could be done down the road. He did this for free as part of a consultation. And when I asked about multiple tree varieties in my yard, he immediately knew what they were and what specific love they need in order to thrive. I look forward to bringing him back to help grow some edibles as he is clearly an expert in that field too. He is a kind soul with incredible professionalism. Look no further if you have anything in your yard that needs expert TLC!

Mr Perrone and his work crew were contracted this summer to clear out a grossly over-grown , very large back yard ( 8 years worth of unattended weeds, bushes, trees, vines, etc.) that included removal of a massive oak tree that had been cut down years earlier. They worked for a couple of weeks under horrible weather conditions ( H-O-T ) and did an amazing job. I found Mr. Perrone to be one of the few ethical, knowledgeable & communicative professionals in this field and would highly recommend him for this & other work, that I know he is also skilled at. It is my sincere pleasure to write this testimonial of recommendation. Kathi K, Yonkers

This is the first time I tried finding a service provider on this site, since I tend to do a lot of projects myself. In a nutshell, Marc was great! I am a very meticulous person when undertaking projects due to my background in architecture, and Marc exceeded my expectations. I began a large hardscape project last year and needed the finishing touch of a large sod install project . It required ripping out the old turf, regrading the soil where trees were recently removed, installing new topsoil and 2500sf of sod. All of this on top of hilly terrain. Marc's crew was very professional and meticulous. His company had all the required tools and multiple trucks to complete the project. It was completed in a timely manner, within a few days of singing the contract. The communication and coordination was excellent. The pricing was very competitive and I am extremely happy with the entire experience.

On decided I was going to install artificial turf on a side yard where my kids constantly play and destroy any attempt I make in growing grass. Most times when it would rain a little It would be a mud bath and my house was constantly filled with mud foot prints. I reached out to Turf tech and they were very helpful in exploring options of laying down the turf. They came out for the estimate and were no pushy like many salespeople can be. After working with us so we could come to an agreement on price, they were set to install. Their crew was like a finely tuned machine, they did the job in two days but a total of like 9 hours. The kids love it, actually every kid in the neighborhood loves it. I would highly recommend turf tea as a great company if you are looking to go the Turf route.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
