Replace bathroom tile, renovate bathroom, build new closet, replace kitchen sink/faucets/counter, replace radiator, install recessed lighting. Working with Ariel was a pleasure. Jacob and Joseph understood the work completely, had great advice on the design of my small Manhattan studio. They started on time every day were easy to communicate with and were fairly priced. I would def recommend them to friends and family.

Arati helped us with the interior design of our restaurant. Her services exceeded our expectations. She is highly knowledge and her skills are unsurpassed. She is talented and an amazing designer. She has an impeccable taste which just made the project spectacular. She created a look that is representative of our style, distill our taste and ideas into a design that suited our need and budget. She came up with an easy to understand system to help design the place. She worked very closely with our contractor and found the right mix that worked for all of us. Her design concept and creativity was fabulous. Her color concept is simple put UNIQUE! First we were skeptical of using her choice of colors for walls and curtains but the end result was AWESOME. She followed thru the entire project, designing, shopping for paint, furniture, etc. There is a tremendous value in using her services. Afterward, I even used her services to redesign the interior of my house. Great experience. just awesome!!!

Fresh Design was able to accommodate our job to repaint the walls of our old apartment and paint our new apartment on an short turnaround. They have an excellent website, quickly sent us a detailed proposal that itemized our expected charges and then did a great job within budget. They were responsive to our feedback throughout the process and the consultant Ben and painter Lawrence were both a pleasure to work with.

Ursallie helped us design our 1 bedroom beach front apartment. First of all, she is a joy to work with, always upbeat, never uptight! She has an amazing eye, and sees a room as no one else was able to, thereby making the most of the space. She has great connections so she was able to save us a lot of money enabling us to be able to get everything we wanted to, instead of having to settle for less. She is reliable, she is quick, and she is organized! Our apartment came out better than we could have dreamed, everything is as comfortable as it is beautiful! Everyone's mouth drops when they visit us. I cannot say enough nice things about Ursallie, her design sense, her dependablity and her wonderful disposition.

Lani designed a whole new living room and made upgrades to the kitchen and family room. The end result was above and beyond my expectations. Lani began by finding out about our likes, dislikes, goals, budget, etc.. She then did her research and presented us with various fabrics and colors. The process evolved into a formal design plan, costs, and timelines. The most exciting part was being gone all day to return to a beautiful, newly decorated home. Lani was as excited as we were and it was apparent how much passion she has for her work.

I hired Holzman Interiors about 17 years ago when I first bought my home in New Canaan, Ct. She designed and furnished it completely with an update to the existing kitchen. It seemed only logical to call her back when we were ready to do a renovation to the kitchen. We came to her showroom which was a big help. There, you could combine all your needed selections under one roof. Julie is a remarkably talented interior designer who is a joy to work with. Her design aesthetic is absolutely superb. She is dedicated, focused, responsive and a great listen and communicator. She is an excellent partner and collaborator in projects of significance and complexity. We wouldn’t recommend or want to work with anyone else!

She has an extraordinary eye for space and design and was able to transform our home into something straight out of our dreams. And in very little time! Our family loved her energy and willingness to work with us to accommodate our tastes and color preferences with her own flare and creativity. We were most impressed with how she was able to combine all different antique, modern and traditional pieces into one cohesive and inviting space. Thank you Cricket!!

We worked with Angelika to decorate our offices in the financial district in lower Manhattan. We had both a tight timeframe and a tight budget. Angelika had a great vision for the space and quickly keyed in on the aesthetic we were looking for. She prepared the layout, selected furnishings and artwork, and implemented the design. She was responsive to all our requests along the way, reviewing options and following up with vendors. We are very happy with the final product – the space is great to work in and the overall look has the clean lines we were looking for. In addition, the project was completed on time and within budget .Angelika was a pleasure to deal with and made the process very easy for us. We would highly recommend her and would readily use her services again for an office or home design project. CWI

Tracey Butler was engaged at the outset to collaborate with the architect and builder to rework plans to best meet our needs. This included working as part of the team to incorporate design elements, maximize views, and improve the flow of the house. Most importantly, she was able to visualize the finished product and advised us on almost every aspect of the house, including where we would need storage, closets, room size, kitchen layout, placement of furniture, lighting, etc…so that the overall finished product was not only built to plans, but incorporated our vision from the very beginning. This was essential so that the builder could stick to the schedule and allowed us move forward without the need for multiple changes . The communication between the architect, builder, contractors and designer was extremely good and Tracey worked closely with them in a timely and productive fashion so that we moved forward productively from the beginning. After the initial plans were finalized, Tracey worked on and developed the designs for the kitchen including cabinets, countertops, stone, backsplash and lighting. She designed all the bathroom vanities, countertops and again helped with selections for all the plumbing fixtures and lighting. The outcome was exactly what we hoped for and is both beautiful and functional. She chose all the flooring including tiles, carpet and wood and the flow from room to room was well thought out, looks beautiful and again is very functional. The lighting in our house is exceptional and that is due to the selection of light fixtures throughout. We couldn’t have achieved the desired lighting without Tracey’s taste level and guidance. Tracey helped us incorporate existing important pieces that we owned into our new home - some of which were repurposed - and chose new furniture that fit the house perfectly. She was mindful of our budget and chose pieces that were durable with kids and dogs, yet modern and sophisticated. Each selection was given great consideration, we were given choices and upon arrival achieved the desired look. Tracey Butler was essential to the successful building and furnishing of our new home. We were incredibly happy with the design, service, level of personal attention and final product. I highly recommend her as a designer who is able to take on a large project and see it through from start to finish, sticking to the budget provided and meeting the goals agreed upon from the outset.

Working with Jacqueline on my bedroom remodel was a breeze and a very pleasant experience! She was quite thorough in explaining the design process and setting expectations, giving me peace of mind and confidence in her abilities. She patiently listened to my needs and took my input into consideration in revising the initial concepts. While the the final design took a little longer than anticipated, it was worth the wait. I'm really pleased with the output and product selections!

Jill provided a tremendous amount of help to me in articulating and defining my tastes and preferences. The biggest challenge was maintaining focus and making decisions as I was in the midst of a learning curve and didn't have a clear idea of what I wanted at the outset of the project. With respect to design and decorating, my horizons were truly broadened and I had such a great experience working with Jill. I came to appreciate styles and options I never would have considered on my own. I came to see the tremendous potential that existed in my apartment and became excited about the many other projects I can undertake one day. I appreciated the thoughtfulness, patience and design skill she demonstrated throughout the project.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does it mean to stage a home?

Home staging is the real estate strategy of decorating your home to be as marketable as possible to your target demographic. Home staging is done by interior decorators and other design pros hired by the homeowner or realtor, prior to putting a house on the market. Think of it as setting the stage for potential buyers to fall more easily in love with their future homes — and to spend top dollar to get them. It’s likely to be worth the investment: The Real Estate Staging Association reports that staged homes spend 90 percent less time on the market than those that are not staged. Home stagers can also be hired even if you’re not going anywhere. Stagers can consult on new layouts for your current home, much like an interior decorator.

Home staging can take place while you still occupy the house you plan to sell, or when the home is vacant. For an occupied home, the home stager will clear out clutter, rearrange furniture, and bring in decor and furniture as needed to create the perfect environment. Usually an occupied home has far too much of the current owner’s personality stamped on it, which makes it hard for prospective buyers to envision themselves living there. A home stager should neutralize and beautify the space. In vacant homes, a home stager will bring in furniture and decor so that potential buyers don’t walk into an empty house, which can be equally hard to imagine living in as a cluttered, occupied home.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How much does it cost to stage a home for sale?

Nationally, the price for home staging ranges between $750 and $1,500. The price varies based on how many rooms in the house need staging, whether furniture and decor are needed or the stager can work with the client’s belongings, whether the home is occupied or vacant, and the sale price of the home. Occupied homes typically cost less to stage as they are already furnished, and can require less time and resources than staging an empty house. The main tasks when staging an occupied home are rearranging and decluttering. Staging an empty house can be more expensive as furniture and decor need to be trucked in, requiring transportation, physical labor and potential rental fees. Here are some examples of average home staging costs:

  • 2-hour consultation: $200, includes DIY tips and guidance.
  • 1- to 2-hour consultation and design session: $250, including written report.
    • Additional design consulting: $65 per hour.
  • 8 hours of staging an occupied home: $800.
    • Hands-on staging involving moving furniture, hanging and moving art, and decluttering.
  • Starting price for staging a vacant home could be $2,200.
  • A home stager may charge 1 percent of the home’s selling price.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.
