Jason is an amazing guy, did a fantastic job for us in fixing a clogged gutter drain pipe. He came over on the weekend with his son to install a French drain for us at a great price...... don't even hesitate about hiring him.

Jerome mounted a 65" TV in our home. He was familiar with the type of mount before arriving and did an excellent job. Jerome was scheduled to come the day of a snow storm and made accommodations to keep our appointment despite the weather. We are very happy with his work and would recommend him.

Kathy was responsive to my call and scheduled a visit by the plumber (Sam) the next day (Saturday). Sam arrived on time and within few minutes identified the sources to the leaks from the bathtub drain area. Both the drain valve and the faucet valve were leaking. Sam fixed the drain valve on that day and came back two days later on Monday with the parts needed to replace the leaky faucet valve as well as a new faucet set that I wanted him to install. There were two options to replace the faucet valve - one from the front (bathtub) side which requires removing a few tiles, or from behind, which requires cutting a small area on the drywall in the adjacent room. Although it would have been easier for him to work from the front side, he decided to work from behind so that I don't have to hire another contractor to install the tiles later. I truly appreciated his thoughtfulness. He also suggested that I install access panels where the cut was made on the wall as well as on the ceiling at the first floor, below the bathtub drain valve. Sam did an excellent job and he was on time as promised. The price was very reasonable. Sam is honest and trustworthy. I will certainly hire him whenever I need work that Sam does.

Walter was great. The main drain of my house was clogged and I told him it was an emergency. He showed up at my house at 9 o'clock at night. He worked hard to fix it but it became evident that the problem was worse than we thaught. He promptly showed up the next day with the proper equipment and took care of the the problem. I would definately recomend him and will surely consider him for future projects.

I highly recommend Celtic Piping and Heating. Edward got back to me quickly with an online quote while many other plumbers or contractors refuse to provide even a ballpark estimate without seeing the project. (Translation: it's harder to refuse when someone is standing in your apartment ready to work even if the price is outrageous!) Edward called me back within 30 minutes to arrange for a time and arrived promptly... on a Saturday, no less! I had failed to mention that I needed a drain installed in addition to two faucets and that wasn't a problem for him. He clearly knows what he is doing and my kitchen and bathroom now have a much more updated look thanks to his efforts. Edward is a true professional and he clearly takes pride in what he does. He left me with his card in case there were any problems as he guarantees his work. I don't think that I'll be needing it... until I have another project, that is! Terrific!

William replaced water shut-off valves for sink and dishwasher. While testing the water lines, he discovered leaks caused by a contractor's incomplete installation of drain pipes and faucet. William properly installed these items and prevented water damage to new cabinets. He also replaced leaky bathroom sink pipe connectors. Excellent work, fast completion time, and fair prices. I highly recommend his plumbing services. Thanks Thumbtack.com!

My partner and I just moved to NJ from NC and had quite a bit of repairs and upgrades we needed to complete on the new home we purchased. One such upgrade was venting the dryer. This home was built in 1892 so needless to say, the original architectural plan did not include a dryer. The previous owners installed a gas line - but where the gas line had to run to attach to the kitchen stove, made for a really poor location in the basement in regards to venting the dryer. Before Nick came, he let me know a price for a best case scenario, which I appreciated because had he named a price over my budget, it would have given us both the opportunity to cancel the estimate so as not to waste time. Nick arrived on-time for the estimate and at first it was pretty tricky to find a solution for venting the dryer without completely tearing up the ceiling and walls. Nick was persistent in finding though and was able to devise a plan of going through an old nonfunctional window that was hidden and covered. I hired him to complete the dryer venting and also uncap the gas line and install a hose in preparation for the dryer installation. On the day of the project, Nick arrived on time (7:30am on a Saturday) It took him about 2.5 hours to complete everything. He did a fantastic job. One strength I want to highlight is that Nick not only gets the job done, and does it well, but also takes pride in the aesthetics of his work. He could have easily vented the dryer in a way that exposed the pipe all the way along the ceiling and through the window, but instead he figured out a way to fish it under the sheet rock for a cleaner look. He also cleaned his work space completely - which I have found to be rare for contractors in this area. I have had many contractors who were ready to walk out the door without cleaning up their mess and would have done so had I not asked them to clean up before they go. I also want to highlight that I had a sewage pipe issue in the basement prior to his dryer venting project. Nick also does plumbing so I called him at 4pm and he was at my house by 8pm. People who who have hired folks for sewage pipe leaks know that cleaning up the sewage is not part of the job. Nick was willing to clean and sanitize on top of snaking the pipes and clearing them of clogs for a reasonable price. Nick has been great to work with and does great work. I have already hired him to take care of some other projects around the house (installing a shower door, clearing debris in the backyard). Glad we found a go-to handyman for our new home!

5 Stars are not enough for this contractor. Eric answered every question Marilyn and I asked during the two intensive remodeling conferences we had prior to hire. He made suggestions, measured, measured again, thought before he answered, and didn't give us a price off the top of his head. We were interested in his approach, his prior experience, his honesty and integrity. After all, if we were giving him permission to work in our home. Eric installed a new high end kitchen that delights my wife every time she opens a cabinet. Pleasing, efficient, well designed and laid out is the finish we received. We got more value than we paid for. Finally found a general contractor who stayed on the job every scheduled day until our work was totally completed. Once we saw Eric's experience in progress, we booked more work-- over 700 feet of new flooring, trim work, utility room to guest bedroom transformation, fan installation, duct work, sheet rocking, taping, painting, handyman type items. I can't say enough good things about Eric and his craftsmanship, honesty, and sincerity of performance. Interview him last. Whatever you pay, i assure you he is worth it and fair. Feel free to call me at 845-492-0261. I am a NYS Licensed Real Estate Broker and will be recommending Eric to my clients when they need a go to contractor with a varied skill set in all phases of remodeling and general contracting. Great job. I will consider Mandell Plumbing for any plumbing issue that I have in the future. I originally thought that I had a sump pump issue but turned out to be a clogged drain to the street. They were at my house within an hour of calling them and fixed the issue as promised.

Jon was great to work with - communicative and reasonable. I hired Wheelhouse to construct a deck on a flat portion of my homes's roof. All other estimates were out of the range I budgeted. Jon and his crew were able to offer options, realistic time frames and work within my limited budget. His crew was punctual and hard working. Alex in particular worked outside in 95 degree heat and even during a rain storm. I am pleased with the work and looking to hire them again for other projects I have in mind.

My gutters were destroyed by a winter storm last year, I had my gutters replaced, plywood and some of my sidings. When I was given my estimate, I was also told when the work would be completed. Everything was done the said time, the staff was friendly. I am happy with the service. When I need more work done I will definitely call them back. Satisfied customer!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
