I used Arbor Tutors for math and English tutoring for both the GMAT and the GRE (I didn't know what I wanted to do for grad school). I ended up in the top 10% for the GRE and 720 on the GMAT. My tutor was amazing!!! I was so happy my boyfriend hired Arbor for Spanish tutoring. Super happy!

Kamil is an excellent tutor. We found Kamil through this website in our efforts to find a tutor for the SAT preparation. Our focus was on the Math portion of SAT. Kamil is a real professional and has the ability to adapt his teaching to the student. What I mean specifically is that while reviewing concepts and problems he was very flexible in providing multiple explanations to solving problems. I really appreciated the manner in which he was able to connect with my 17 year-old daughter and in my conversations with her she felt confident in his instruction and the value he added. She has found that his tutoring for the SAT has been helpful in her schoolwork as well. I would strongly recommend you reach out to Kamil if you or your child are looking for tutoring that will provide significant help in achieving higher scores. I would absolutely use Kamil again if I were in the market for a tutor for my child.

I am a literature student who hadn't studied math in several years. Aron helped me to prepare for the GRE. He is an outstanding tutor who made each of the exam's mathematical components accessible to me. He is punctual, considerate, knowledgeable, and willing to adapt the tutoring based on the student's needs. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

I was able to achieve what I thought was not possible; a 780 on the GMAT. When I started my journey of struggling to perform well on the GMAT, I was scoring in the upper 500's. I finally bit the bullet and went to a well-known tutoring company that I had heard great things about. Unfortunately, they were unable to help me get my score up more than 20 points. So I went to another tutor that was highly recommended by my undergrad peers. This person went to an Ivy League school and was well liked by those who used his services. And, he did manage to bring my score up to a 640, but this was still well below what I was hoping to achieve. Finally, I did some research, and took a shot with Dr. Fikar. He knew my background and the various tutors I had worked with. He was confident that he could get my score into the mid 700 range, if he had my complete cooperation. I had every reason to doubt him, but, I decided instead to put my complete trust in him and his decades of expertise, and I'm so glad that I took that step of faith. He knew exactly how to sharpen my strengths and bolster my weaknesses, and, although I am by nature a type A personality who likes to have a certain structure and step by step plan in place, Dr. Fikar was much more talented than any spreadsheet of incremental goals that I had received from my previous tutors. I'm not trying to knock those that have a cookie cutter planned approach, I have just realized that in order to achieve a super high score, relying on structured lesson plans will never get you there. It was more of an art form with Dr. Fikar, as he combined his vast knowledge of the GMAT exam and his brilliant mind with unique and creative, out-of-the-box teaching methods and use of materials. He was not limited by a standard approach, but rather tuned into my specific needs on any given day, and helped bring me to a score that was frankly beyond my wildest dreams. Of course I gained admission into my top school choice, and the future is very bright for me now. I am so much more than appreciative, and plan on referring him to all of my friends and family members, when the time comes for them. His services are truly worth every penny that I spent.

Our daughter had all the pieces in place for a successful collehe app - except for her sat score. She had 4 months to raise her score by 200 points. We knew she needed a tutor and Nick came highly recommended by her guidance counselor. The results were immediate. We are in his debt.

I would definitely recommend Odyssey Test Prep for anyone preparing for the LSAT! I booked a handful of private tutoring sessions in the 6 weeks leading up to my exam to fine-tune my methods and it was a huge help. My tutor Sandy was extremely helpful and worked me through the barriers I was trying to break as I got closer to test day.

You know it’s a nightmare out there, looking for the right fit for your kids when you are searching for test prep tutors. I have twins going into the SATs and there are just so many bad teachers out there. I really had to ask Chelsea International a lot of questions when I came across them. I have to say, they blew me away. Not just with their professional nature, but also with their level of expertise, care, and true understanding of what it takes to bring out your child’s fullest potential. I would recommend this tutoring service to anyone. The kids have been working with them now for the last few months, and the difference in their work is amazing. I am really looking forward to seeing their scores after their SAT tests.

I highly recommend Horace, he is an amazing tutor! Horace helped me improve my score from a 570 to a 710 after just a couple of weeks of tutoring sessions! He is very patient and strategic in his approach. He made sure to understand my testing strengths and weaknesses and tailored his approach to meet my needs. He was also very accessible and invested in my success - he spent several hours sitting through practice exams with me (via virtual sessions) so he could get a real sense of where I needed to improve and spent several hours reviewing both incorrect answers as well as correct answers that I could be answering more quickly or more efficiently. I can honestly say I would not have scored a 700+ score without Horace in my corner.

Sandy is a great tutor. The moment I walked into her working space we felt (my family & I) welcomed by Sandy with a great warm smile. I automatically felt comfortable with her, as she seemed very caring and eager to help. I told her that my son needed a lot of help with reading and she told me not worry and that he will have a great learning experience. She has been very understanding of my son needs. She even reach out to his teacher in school to be on track with his needs. Sandy has also manage to fit his classes at convenient times and is always reachable by phone. I strongly recommend Sandy, she truly care about transforming my son into a confident and fluent reader. I am very happy and can thanks her enough.

Gail is a very kind warm hearted person. Before Gail my son wasn't doing very well and his grades were poor, he always complained about not feeling well to get out of going to school, he would always say I hate school. My son has caught up on many missing assignment's, his teacher's have notice a big difference in him. I would Highly recommend Above Grade Level In-Home Tutoring with Gail Switsky. I found Ben through a tutoring company. My son needed a "homework helper" when he was in Middle School after being diagnosed with a learning disability. Ben showed great patience and helped him to stay focus and organized. We liked him so much that when my younger son was in elementary school and had some reading issues we went right back to Ben. Noticing my young son's lisp he incorporated music and auditory things into the mix which totally worked in helping him through this awkward stage. Fast forward to the present and my son with learning disabilities is a Junior at Hamilton College and my young son is at the Dalton School and is doing very well. I wouldn't hesitate to work with Ben. He connects to people, especially young people and he really cares about helping them. It's great we don't need him anymore but sad at the same time.

Luka worked with my son throughout his freshman year at NYU. We have worked with tutors previously and Luka has by far, been the most inspiring and dependable teacher/tutor that we have had the fortune of working with. My son, who is in the Pre Med/Health undergrad program will continue to work with Luka throughout his academic career. Our son's GPA went from a GPA of 3.0 to 3.8.~ we highly recommend Luka.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

What is ACT test prep?

The ACT is a college entrance exam taken by students (typically in their junior year of high school) to determine admission eligibility and merit-based scholarship eligibility. The test may be taken as many times as desired and is not limited to high school juniors. Originally the acronym stood for American College Testing, but now ACT is the stand-alone name. ACT prep is a way for students to strategically prepare for test-taking. ACT prep helps students improve scores, practice taking the test, learn test-taking strategies, and improve material comprehension. Students can get help with ACT prep tutors in one-on-one sessions, via group tutoring lessons, in online self-study programs, or online with a tutor in video calls. The ACT test covers:

  • English
  • Science understanding and reasoning
  • Math
  • Reading
  • Writing essay (optional)

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How do you prepare for the ACT?

The ACT is a universally accepted college readiness exam. There are multiple ways to prepare for the exam. One-on-one ACT prep tutoring is one of the most effective ways for students to ready themselves for the test. A tutor who specializes in ACT prep will coach the student on the type of material they can expect while also working specifically with topics that are more challenging for that particular student. Group tutoring sessions are a more cost-effective way to reap the benefits of an ACT prep instructor; a suggestion is to gather a group of four friends or classmates to share the cost. Professional tutors often recommend that test prep begin approximately three months prior to the exam. Cramming — unfortunately — doesn’t provide the same score results as consistent study, test-related homework, and practice exams do. Weekly two-hour learning sessions are what many pro tutors suggest for their college exam prep students. For top test-taking performance, tutors usually provide work throughout the week and the weekly session is used to cement knowledge and address weak areas. Math is a hard topic for most students, so plan accordingly.
